It works on the Pokeball principle. Actually the entire idea can about when Ash got a little too "into" his Pokemon and decided to design a Pokeball that he could use to consumate his relationship with Ekans. The Galactic Federation found out about it and bought his prototype and reconfigured it for use on Super Soldiers. After a wild night of passion with Master Chief and Commander Sheppard, Samus found their units (after losing two of their units in her) and stole them for her bounty hunting missions.

I believe it's been stated already but it is an alien technology Samus adapts to her suit. It's called a morph ball since it physically changes her size (i've always assumed that anyway).

I'm assuming her body goes off into the space between existence. much like where Optimus Prime's trailer goes when he transforms in the original series.

As I understand it, she's part-Chozo or something. I always assumed that gave her some kind of alien superbiology that includes curling into a small sphere.
