I'll come right out and say this: like a good number of people, I love World of Warcraft. The amount of time I have spent playing the game over the past number of years or so amounts to a lot. Recently however, I seem to now find myself in an awkward position with the game: I can't get the hang of and/or stick with creating a new character, no matter the race/class combination.

Allow me to put things into perspective before I get too far, though.

My account was hacked for the first time this past September. At the time, I wasn't even playing the game, choosing instead to focus on other things. I chose not to persue the hacker and regrettably, not contacting Blizzard to resolve the issue. However, I at least locked my account for the time being, adding a Blizzard Authenticator to ensure it's security. I played Starcraft II as well, you see.

Around mid-October, I sought to play World of Warcraft again, choosing to abandon my previous characters that I no longer had any interest in playing and starting fresh, on a new server, one that matched my own time zone, which is something I did not worry about before. It is now almost late December, and I have no characters as of yet. As I said, the hacker pretty much made my previous characters useless, and because I did not choose to immediately resolve the problem with Blizzard, I felt now would be as good a time as ever to start over, something I wanted to do anyway.

That being said, I can not, for the life of me, decide on a new character to play. I am not tired of the game by any means. I want to play the game, it's fun and I enjoy it now as much as I did five years ago when I was first exposed to it. Is it me? Is there something in my subconscious that forces me to tire of any brand new characters I create, even after only a couple hours or so? I fail to understand why. I love the game, I'm just not sure it loves me back very much right now.

[sub]My previous characters were an 85 Rogue, and a 80 Warrior, in case you were curious.[/sub]

I played most of the classes to a decent extent (raided as Druid/Shaman/Warrior in different expansions and such) and of every class I ever played I could never shake my love-affair with Druids. It's 4 classes in one essentially so its hard to go wrong. Honestly though I was done with WoW for good after Cata came out. Good luck with the new expansion, looks like a winner... :(

I dont think you actually like the game. You say you want to play the game but do you want to play it because its fun or because you are spending $15 a month on the subscription? I ask this because you say nomatter what you try you continue to tire the game after a couple hours. To me that does not sound like you are actually enjoying the game.
Perhaps I didn't phrase my opinion clear enough, I apologize. Take two.

I do like the game, it's great fun. The problem I have is, I go to create a character, of which I have none of yet, mind you, and I find myself far too uncertain of what role I want to play in the game. The price of the subscription of the game isn't an issue, as the game/subscription was a gift. A gift that keeps on giving. It's just that after the ordeal with my previous characters, I find myself at a loss for what to do whenever I want to play the game again. It's hard to explain, but as of now I have all 0 characters on my account.

I'm not really asking what class I should play, but rather what others do when faced with a similar dillema as me, if at all.

I usually play something else if that happens XP

I can solve all of your problems.

Quit WoW, and play a REAL MMORPG that has no classes or races. Runescape

While quitting WoW for good may solve the problem, you have already voiced that you have no desire to do so. The only other option I can give you, is to wait for that shiny new expansion that is on the horizon, and try out that new kung-fu panda race.

I don't care if this is sarcastic or not... it's funny either way.

Yeah, that's generally what I've been doing for the time being. Mainly Arkham City.

I knew it was only a matter of time before somebody said something like this. I'm merely trying to get some answers and/or varying opinions, that's all. Jeez.

Plus, I already played Runescape a long time ago, back in Junior High, back when it was fun and interesting. It was a great game, no doubt.

Then World of Warcraft was released.

[sub]Thanks for the bump, by the way.[/sub]

When I started WoW for the first time I couldn't decide either. So I wrote down all the classes on paper and put them into a hat and picked one.

You have to find some inspiration to start your next character. My advice is to think less about the game mechanics of the class your picking, and more about the character themselves. I'm suggesting a small bit of imagination and roleplay, just enough so that you feel motivated to level for the sake of bringing this character to life, not just focusing on what role you'll be playing end-game.

Just to toss in a few cents here regarding your hacked characters. You should try putting in a GM ticket to restore them, no matter how long ago it was. I've had a GM resotore a character that I manually deleted 6 months after I deleted him. Seriously, Blizz keeps some pretty long records and the GMs have in my experience been VERY helpful, even when they could have told me to piss off. It doesn't hurt to try...

As to why you tire of new characters fast, I get that too with many RPG games that I've previously played - I want to build my character, I want the high level abilities and big talent trees. All that sounds great, but once I'm faced with the prospect of actually getting there, I tend to falter. Not much you can do except biting the bullet and getting through the early levels. It gets better as you get more toys to play with and you character starts to flesh out.

Make the opposite race of your main's class. That's what I did, I'm currently levelling a Troll Hunter whilst I have a Human Hunter on the Alliance side. The Troll is lv80 at the moment so I've stuck with it, as slow as I have been going. You could at the same time also follow a specific faction's questline. I've been going out of my way to do quests related to the Forsaken, it makes my character feel unique instead of just some dude that just jumps around randomly from zone to zone. Similarly, ignore experience, levels etc. The game is so much more interesting that way, zones feel like they actually exist as opposed to being "FELWOOD; WHERE YOU LEVEL FROM 45-50", "SILITHUS; THAT PLACE THAT SOUNDS LIKE AN STI" etc.

I am slightly confused by your conundrum...

Your account got hacked and that sucks. You say you have fun playing the game, but you are unable to come up with a character...

Best advice I could give? Take a break. While the game is fun to play UP to level 85, grinding through heroic dungeons to get the minimum itemscore required to get into the easiest raids killed any fun I had with my Resto/Ele Shaman.

I have stopped playing WoW and any MMO until ToR decides to actually get released below the equator, but again. Take a break. If you cannot find a race/class combo don't force or you will kill any enjoyment you had in the game.

play something else for awhile, doesn't matter what, long as its not WoW, then try it again after a few days-weeks see if you can stick with it then

alternatively, you might also just be 'done' with the game on some level or another, and its time to just move on.

Either play the opposite of what you played before, or play something you've never played before.

Or, as someone suggested, wait for Mists of Pandaria comes out and then roll a Jack Bla... er... Panda Monk.

Do what I do. Try to download the Client again after not having played for two years and having the 'urge' to check on my characters finally, after having my account hacked in Jan, and getting bugged by phishing emails every month since then, as hotmail fails at properly blocking senders, by the people who hacked my account and have used my email address to make another battle.net account after I changed the associated email and, due to blizzard's cruddy validation rules which are nonexistent unless you want emails from them, can keep it active. Realise two things.
1. The actual client is 10 GB to download [sub] a lot less compared to TOR's client size but...[/sub]
2. WoW's loader dies everytime you close it and is really crud at downloading the game.
These two facts in conjunction will make you give up trying to play the game again. However, if all this is irrelevant and you already have the game installed then roll a Tauren Druid. They are fun.

Also in answer to question, yes and no. It's not you, it's the game and all it's choice confusing you. Also you may have CBA sydrome which occurs whenever you have done a lot in a game but when presented with the opportunity to start over, you can't be arsed.
Additionally, you may find rebuilding your high level characters to be a fun alternative to a fresh start if you'd rather not restore them.

Try a Worgen Druid. Druid's great, Worgen is newish. Should be fun.

Set yourself an achievable goal. Say, reach Duskwood this weekend or get a mount. Most importantly, find yourself a friendly guild. No chat makes for a sad panda.

Well aside from playing something else for a while then I advise go for an entirely different class, you said you'd played a rogue and a warrior so try a mage or a warlock (warlocks are especially fun in my experience) as they play pretty differently and you'll get to use some new skills. Alternatively if you prefer playing melee characters then try a paladin, death knight or even a feral druid to get a new look on a similar style.

I'd also suggest playing a different faction, if you've played on one faction considerably more then the other will provide lots of new quests to do and characters to meet.
