The Framing:
A massive solar flare has just rocked the planet, acting as a powerful EMP that has caused a worldwide system crash with no chance of reboot.
The Challenge:
Using your wits (or lack of) how would you go about living in a world without technology, ridden with mutants of depraved technology [http://www.bugcomic.com/comics/y2kreatures/] and other such catastrophes?

First I will be like Cold Turkey/ Withdrawn syndrome without technology. Once that is over I will head to the nearest bookshop to find books on survival.
If I somehow survival that long then hopefully I would adopt the lone wanderer persona. Also if the animal somehow mutant into giant beast then I may adopt the monster hunter game type of hunter, wearing armour and weapons made from the monster I have slain.

I'd just go join the amish, they seem pretty good at this sort of thing.

assuming mechanical things still work (like old cars and steam engines) it would be like fallout except there would be no radiation I think society would rebuilt itself to a state pre-electricity in other words not much would change (for me)
PS: IF society would collapse I think I will pillage ruins looking for electronics (there is a method to remove the golden plating of chips) gold would be pretty valuable (since there is no safe way of mining it)

First I'd hit the clothes shops and pick up something for every common type of weather likely to come my way, then I'd make camp in an outdoor supplies/hunting etc shop (defending it with my post-technology ingenuity and a lot of luck, of course), then drag the contents of the local bookshops and supermarkets inside.

Maybe once I'd gotten up to scratch on everything I needed to know to survive and found a way of carrying all essentials without a car (bike and trailer?) I'd do the sensible thing and not stay in one place for too long.

Provided I survive long enough...

Steal a yacht and find a way to get it out into the ocean, then learn to like fish.

Raping and pillaging! Then, when that starts to taste like wood, maybe start organizing a cult...

Let's not delude ourselves here: Most of us would die, either by starvation or by large-scale rioting. Let's not forget that we'll still have six-and-a-half billion people on the planet after the EMP strike, and a lot of those people aren't going to be all that happy to see their computers, cars and other electronic devices die on them.
That's fairly true, but how much actual damage would such an EMP do? AFAIK, it would have little to no effect on anything as little as 50-60 years old. Your grandparents would be terribly nostalgic about everything.

On the other hand, yeah, rioting and having to deal with all the other angry idiots would be more of a concern than simply not having fancy toys.

A lot of people would die, and yeah, we'd have to resort to non-electronic means of production, communication and transport. I think on the whole though, it wouldn't be half as bad as almost total nuclear destruction.

Umm....question to the OP, why would a solar flare cause mutants to suddenly appear? (The comic doesn't really explain that either...)

Edit: Reading up on it, solar flares could very well cause harm to human populations, but, that any mutations would likely be in plants and bacteria.

Solar activity causes plenty of mutations among humans as it is. Skin cancer, for example.

I'd get to do all the things that technology distracts me from doing :) Reading and crafty stuff mostly :p But I guess a lot of people would fall apart without the technology they've come to depend on. I'm not saying I wouldn't miss it (a lot!) but I think I'd survive

I'd start a religion centered around the worship of fire as our divine overlord "Inferno." We shall cleanse the land of heathens, bringing His might down upon them. When the world is cleansed by His flame, a paradise shall rise from the ashes.
(or in plain english: I'm gonna burn stuff)

Also, what the fuck is up with the captchas? They've gotten even more annoying to read, at least for me.
