First of all, I never quite liked RPG's. I tried to liked them, but I quite never managed to be engaged by this genre of games. There are some games that I loved though, and for me they are the best RPG's: System Shock 2 and Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines.
Note that I haven't played any RPG made by BioWare, so that's why their games are not in my
list -yet-. I also played every TES games by Bethesda, and I never liked them.
But now onto Fable. This is my list of things I didn't like:
1. The Story: My gripe about it is that it's cliche, I have seen many other games that try to do the same thing: Some tragedy or Misfortune happens to the Protagonist, someone helps him and now he's going to save the world. I have seen this many, many times. Vampire Bloodlines managed to not to get into this by just not to make the protagonist look like they are the only chance for the people to survive.
2. The Moral system: First of all, when they give you dialogue options or event options (for example at the start of the game), the relation on it is white and black; one is good and one is bad. You never have the chance to do the decision to chose something gray. The Witcher did this quite well, 90% of the decisions are like this, in between good and evil. Vampire however, most of the options are either gray to black, which is fine to me.
3. Some of the spells are quite unbalanced. I think this is self explanatory.
4. The protagonist is not well crafted: my problem is that the game doesn't show much backstory of the character, nor what he is thinking. The game just shows moments before his town is raided, to his rescue, to when he arrives to the town, to the 5 minutes of training, to his graduation. But anything else and after that, the character doesn't get much developed, since he doesn't speak, etc, etc.
5. The combat is simplistic: I found this as my biggest issue with the game as a PC gamer. Most of the time the game is just clicking parties. Sure, you have your different arsenal of weapons, combos and spells, but they didn't manage to show that much difference. Also it was a lot easier to use a blade rather than a bow. Also, why would they feature and autolock feature anyway? Yeah it could work for sword fighting, but things like spells and although it's possible to not use it while on a bow, it's a lot more easier to use it rather than to do the job yourself. They could have just used a better targeting reticule, like Thief, and to disable the autolock feature for at least spells and bows. Add that I felt like it was unbalanced.
6. Some of the things just seem out of place and not very good implemented: An example: Marrying. What benefit does it bring you? Nothing. Not even get you a partner for the rest of the game. So why did you bother marrying or even implementing on the game? No reason whatsoever, just for the sake of it.
7. The rest of the character aren't well developed either: Most of the NPC only have two to three voices, and when someone is talking to their twin in voice, it's just does not show enough care about the game, specially when the game attempts to make o create a living city.
