I bought GTA IV on steam for the PC. It won't launch. It says launching GTA IV, setup for initial start up. After 1 or 2 seconds, the window disappears, the game doesn't launch. Before that, I told it to launch, it started installing VC++ or something like that, I know there was a ++. After that, my videos started to lag. The video it self, doing nothing, while the audio continues. It also seems to make my computer slower in general. I did a virus scan and got nothing. This game took me a day to download seeing as my internet blows and steam's servers are being flooded... I already know I meet the PC requirements, so it's not that. I restarted my computer three times, nothing.

PS. I'm not sure whether you're supposed to ask questions such as this on the escapist so... Just tell me if you're not.

EDIT: And if I'm not, then I'll add a question... What game did you spend the most time waiting for it to download?

I *think* you might just need to leave it to work for a bit.

And yes, you can ask tech questions here.

I can't answer your plight, Steam is a mystery to me.
But in answer to your tacked-on question; I have downloaded no game, unless World of Warcraft patches count. In which case, those.

I once waited 24+ hours for Shivering Isles to download. Back when I had shitty internet. Now, I spent 6+ hours DL'ing "The Bard's Tale" from Steam, only to find that the framerate is absolute shit on my PC.

Just let it install the VC++ redistributle, and then it should work. Just be patient

Visual C++ is pretty normal for an install, and its no surprise it caused your computer to slow down during the install.... you should just of left it alone for the whole 2 minuets it takes to do it. If its refusing to launch you'll just have to delete local content and re-download it.
On the other topic i guess the Last Remnant at 16 gig or so was the longest download.

I wouldn't laugh at you for buying the first game. Only if you bought the second.

Longest I believe was Unreal3 from Steam.

I downloaded UT 3 from steam too, that took ages, but $30 AU when the retail price is $100 AU? You can't give up on a deal like that

Fallout 3. I downloaded it on launch day, and it took forever. Which was really frustrating since I was anxious to play the game.

God I love these steam sales..

But god I hate how the downloads take forever during the sales, since everyone is buying everything.

Longest time spent downloading a steam game? I have no idea..

Well, before last month I would have said 'Betrayal At Krondor' (26MB) It took 3 days & 5 attempts with a 14.4kbps modem because people kept picking up the &%$*&#%& phone. Now, 'Fallen Earth' wins, hands down, with the most ridiculous updating system I've ever seen - it insisted on downloading each and every file of the 5GB+ install separately...uncompressed. At one point, it estimated that it would be done in 3 weeks. Seriously. I ended up spending an entire weekend downloading, adding 16GB to my bandwidth usage, and only succeeded after finding an alternate method of installation that required yet another 5GB d/l. (OTOH, the game itself is actually pretty cool. Go figure.)

I got the game too. It was only like $7.50 on the steam sale. About $40 later, I picked up probably $100 worth of good games.

OT: Empire: Total War. Waited 10 hours for it to download. Luckily, everything went smooth after that.
