About Resident Evil 5, stupid review(er)s, and me being absurdly crazy.

Sooo, the first reviews of Resident Evil 5 are coming in (here's one [http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=208483]), a game I'm really looking forward to. And the people in general are too.
So what do they generally say? They're a little disappointed.
Oookay, why? The first reason is that it's more like an action movie, less like a horror game.
The other big reason is that Sheva's AI is a little... inspired by trigger happy kamikaze pilots.
Oh, and the controls aren't 'next gen'...
We could've seen all of this coming after playing the demo.

Personally, I don't like these kind of reviews. That is, reviews that complaint about a game not being what they expected it to be.
In itself, that's fine - we all have our tastes, and we can dislike something for not being the thing we want.
What's not fine is spreading hate about the things that we don't like without thinking about the people that would like it.
I'd like to mention P.N.03, an old game for the Gamecube. People expected it to be a third person shooter like Halo, but in a different setting. It wasn't, and it was disliked for it.
I went in expecting, well, nothing really but an action game, a very broad definition. In P.N.03 I found a very enjoyable top down shooter (with a 3D perspective).
I feel like this is happening to Resident Evil 5 now.
I'm going to buy the game, and treat it like any other game: I will not have (m)any expectations. I'll just put the disc in, and enjoy the thing Resident Evil 5 is, and not complaint about what it isn't.

Also, I've missed one point: crappy artificial intelligence.
Now this is actually something I'm going to enjoy. I like having someone to protect (and if possible mentor). I'm also going to play with friends who've never played a Resident Evil game before, and probably suck.
My playstyle in the demo boiled down to this: I gave all my weapons to Sheva (except one for environmental destruction and worst case scenarios). Then I told her to have fun while I charge the boss-like guy with my knife.
ROAR! XD

Personally I'd have preferred a strictly one player experience but whatever, I'm sure it'll be worth the £30.

The problem isn't that the controls aren't "Next Gen", the problem is that the controls are shit. And intentionally so. The designer has even said that the awkward, clumsy controls are going to stay specifically because they make the game "more tense".

Here's a fucking hint, if you have to rely on making the game fiddly and annoying to control to induce tension, you are doing it wrong.

The problem I think with RE5 is that it no-longer really deserves the Resident Evil logo. If they had of given it a different title, I am sure it would be better but the game itself has lost a lot of what made it an iconic game. That was that it was the original when it came to scaring the piss into your pants.

Resident Evil 4 had the atmosphere but it becomes far more difficult to remain scary in a co-op situation. The game has lost what I loved about it in my honest opinion. I will probably rent it on release and play through it, but I don't think it will disappoint me, because my expectations are relatively low.

... P.N.03 was one of my favorite games...

Anyways, seriously, 8? The game looks to deserve a 9 atleast.

And to the guy above me, you can be scary in Co-Op. Left 4 Dead was scary in Co-Op

"This game is missing something... Its just not scary enough.. AHA! Shit controls. We'll give them shit controls. That'll SCARE THE FUCK OUT OF THEM" "Excuse me, sir? Forgive my bluntness but wouldn't shit controls just make the game shit?" "You're fired"

The reviews seem fair to me. You say that it's unfair to base a game on what you expect of it, but I expected more from a next gen game than a HD rehash of a last gen game.

People have a right to expect something out of the fifth installment of a series.
You see when you start a series of games, they should feel alike, at least at the core of it all. Now I haven't played any of the RE games so I can't vouch for this series but I can guarantee you the second Guitar Hero starts swapping around fret buttons just to mix it up a little people are going to go apeshit.

A series of games only exists because of the initial fanbase who made it possible for a sequel to be made, and for the insurance that the sequel sells of course. The way to appeal to this fanbase is to keep the core gameplay the same. Sure a little tweaks in look is good, to keep it fresh. But to change a - in this case - horror franchise into some sort of action shooter is doing it wrong.

Aargh, Max, you've uncovered my true identity! Now I must flee to my secret base on the moon and plot to destroy you all! XD
Seriously, I don't really enjoy escort missions in general. I can't think of really enjoyable ones. But think of me as the guy who goes on the frontal assault so you can sneak in and steal the case in Team Fortress 2. Something like that.
Also, I'm just playing to Sheva's strenghts here: keeping the cannon fodder at bay. I fear for the boss-only fights. "No Sheva! You can't keep that monstrous fish at bay with a handgun! Back Sheva! Bad girl!"* :(
Thanks Zeushbien, I just like to be able to make life easier for the rest on the team.
GloatingSwine, I personally disagree. I do see your (and others with you) point.
But me? I've never felt that this control scheme couldn't get me through any situation presented to me. So in that sense they work as they should. And something that does what it's supposed to do would be the opposite of shit. For more fluid controls and freedom, and also the action/survival elements, there are enough games that have those. But you shouldn't expect them in a Resident Evil game.
Yes, putting limitations on your controls where the game demands freedom is a retarted design choice. But making a game work with them is not.

*this is where I'll a friend with me.

Never had a problem with the controls myself. But then I did play the hard resis. From 4 onward you are given lots of free space to run around in, tons of ammo and plentiful health. EASY! ;)

In regards to what reviewers are saying, did they really expect resi 5 to be that different from 4? Capcom are a company notorious for milking a franchise dry, until they either ditch it or revamp it. Like it or lump it I guess.

Most of the origional fans will be tuning in for the story and that wesker is in it anyway.

I was distinctly underwhelmed by the demo, I have to say. Yeah, the graphics are nice, but the controls aren't much better than the original. Which is ironic, since almost everything else that made RE an iconic game has been stripped away.. leaving what seems to be a pretty mindless 3rd-person shooter.

Also, Barry Burton > Albet Wesker.

So, true. Making a game hard to control induces frustration not fear/tension. I was so disappointed with the demo for various reasons. Capcom(?) have been making this game for so long, there's no excuse for it to be so bad. They could have made a crap game in a month, why take 18?

Simply a two word review - Sh*t Sandwich.

You'll hate me then...I thought the RE5 demo sucked, and disliked RE4...on the other hand, I found quite a bit of enjoyment in F.E.A.R. and its sequel. Since the demos came out around the same time.
