One thing just about everyone doesn't realize is that most of these events are made by The Escapist with our community in mind, but we are ultimately promoting a game as part of an ad buy. First, we are generally limited to the regions that are eligible for prizes (often US only, but US and Canada this time) because the ad agency we have received the ad buy through only represents those regions. Also, export/import taxes, tariffs, etc. are all things that have to be dealt with once we open it up to international regions, for which any winners are responsible for those fees.
Often one publisher will have many media buying agencies throughout the world with different offices handling different regions and those different agencies hardly ever get along with one another long enough to do something really cool like a world-wide event. Trust us, we've tried multiple times.
Also, this game is already released in Japan so technically America and Canada are not getting it first this time.
