Accidental Trolling

I want to know your opinions on this. My friend posted something insulting Democrats and he was surprised by someone's post that they were a Democrat. I commented saying that there are usually only one or two Republicans per campus. He commented and I commented back making another joke saying that when he returns to school the Republican population would double. Then he got all defensive, started insulting Democrats again, and basically called me stupid for using such logic.

Did I just instigate and troll him by accident?

As a professional trollologist I can definitively say you cannot "accidentally" troll anyone.

I do this all to often. I say something with the wrong implied tone and it goes terrible. I feel bad then

ok with the info I have, there is no way to tell for sure. I do think it IS possible to accidentally troll the over sensitive, but easy to fix, apologize that he took it as an attack, and if he continues to be hostile then he's the troll and act accordingly. For example if you said you something like you think that the republican party is making way to many obvious media mistake, and someone takes that as you think republicans are dumb, and as said person is a republican you are calling him dumb....then a> the person is clearly over sensitive. b> likely missed the point (I've heard republicans SAY things like this lately) and c> is likely not going to get very far with a moderator if you don't make any actual attempt to troll him, though I would not respond to anything he says, except in maybe an apologetic manner, if it's sincere. If he attacks you after that, take it to a moderator, with the whole story, so they can call the troll the troll, and you can both go about you business.
