No one could have foreseen this. After Gorbachev's declaration of Glasnost and Perestroika seemed to make it clear that the Soviet Union was no longer the bogeyman of past decades, it was our friend now. The 90s were a period of peaceful cooperation between our two peoples, and gradually, the West let its guard down. The Cold War was over, peace had come between NATO and Warsaw Pact.

And then in 2010, something almost no one expected - a coup within the Soviet Union, commanders dissatisfied with what they saw as Moscow's licking of the West's boot rose to a head, a man named General Ivan Ilya Stovich becoming the new de facto President of the Soviet Union. Suddenly, we were caught with our pants around our ankles, a gradually disarmed West facing a newly belligerent Warsaw Pact.

But we had no idea just how far this new regime would be willing to go. Not until the missiles fell. But Russia didn't want us dead. They had kept the best fruits of our alliances to themselves, and with it had eliminated fear of mutually assured destruction, with the construction of secret missile defense weapons capable of shooting down our ballistic missiles in flight. Combined with our air forces and navies being weakened after twenty years of peace and prosperity, and you get a situation that could scarcely get any worse.

On June 3rd, 2011, it began. NORAD detected incoming missiles. Appeals to Moscow were ignored, and so it began. The nuclear arsenal of NATO was deployed, hundreds of missiles flying towards Russia. It should have been the end of the world. But instead, one by one the missiles were blasted out of the sky, while Soviet missiles deployed MIRVs, their detonations releasing not the death of nuclear fire, but powerful radiation bursts that killed all life within miles of their detonation, wiping out military base after military base across the globe. Anywhere soldiers marched under a NATO flag, the bright blue-white flashes of death could be seen.
Death count for the first hour of World War III: Over one hundred million.
All around the world, military bases and outposts went dark, hardened ones being struck with thermonuclear warheads while less defended ones being neutralized with radiation weapons. But in a matter of hours, the West had been crippled, their militaries scattered and laid to waste.

Then stage two began, as armies and jets began their invasion, pushing into Europe and deploying into the United States.
For the most part, the only things that lay in the way of Sovet domination were national guard units and a few small outposts that had managed to avoid their attention, either by being too secret or too insignificant to gain notice.

But a handful of pilots managed to escape death, being lucky enough to be in the air during the missile attacks and be far enough away to escape EMP. These few pilots scattered across the western seaboard of the United States soon received a radio transmission from an outpost in the Rocky Mountains, near the Canadian border. With this seeming to be the only hope of clear landing space as all available bases are bathed in radiation or outright obliterated and all civilian airports are a chaotic mess, they make their way to this place, looking for fuel, munitions, and data on what the hell is going on.

* * * * *

Welcome to Aces of World War III. Some of you may be wondering what the hell I'm going on about above. This RP is set in an alternate universe wherein the Soviet Union never collapsed, but instead under Gorbachev's rule became more westernized, leading to a twenty year golden age. Without the fall of the Soviet Union, the proliferation of weapons was much reduced and the War on Terror never began.

As a result of the increased focus on economy and science over the military with the Cold War ending in a peaceful resolution rather than the Soviet collapse, this universe is a few years ahead of us.

This RP takes place immediately after the opening hours of World War III as following a coup by Soviet military, the Soviet Union has declared war on NATO on launched WMD strikes against Europe and North America, devastating their defenses with nuclear, chemical, and radiological attacks. The players will be a small number of pilots drawn to a secret military base in northern Washington state.

Name:

Age:

Gender:

Nationality: (In the last twenty years the United States and Canada have both been operating pilot exchange programs with other nations of NATO, as well as Japan, South Korea, and other allies. Besides that, several European carriers were operating in the Pacific when the war broke out.)

Squadron & Aircraft of Choice: Your character's squadron prior to everything going to shit, and what craft he or she would have been flying at the time, which would presumably be the craft they were trained on. The United States and Canada have both made use of foreign-made Aircraft in this universe, particularly the Eurofighter Typhoon and the Dassault Rafale. (In other words, don't worry about the nation of the fighter, unless you want a MiG, in which case you're SOL)

I am so disappointed I have this new term - "Standard Evil Russian Plot" in my vocabulary. This is spreading and growing wildly!
Besides your detailed opening, you haven't really talked about the world itself. Asia, Africa and South America to be exact, especially Mexico, China and the African nations. Since we will probably not see much cooperation with African Jet fighters, I assume discussing their fate at the moment is futile. However I am mighty interested in the fate of the eastern front and if China had waged their own little war on their neighbors, now lacking the backing they had from their western allies... China taking Japan by force in retribution is a plot point too sweet to ignore. I'm just putting it out there.

Regarding our role - As pilots we are elite soldiers. Also, our age is probably capped at 35-ish (And minimum is 21), also depending on the nation we come from. I'm not fully aware of all of the current fighter aircrafts of today. I have doubts concerning this - Will our interaction with the world be from within the cockpit, firing missiles and volleys of heavy munitions against the evil Soviets or is this just a set-up for a survival 'game'?
.
This came to mind - Are helicopters relevant?

Okay, first of all, it's called the Cold War, you might have heard of it. Dominated world politics for about fifty years? I use them because they're the only other superpower in existence. Same reason anyone else uses them. The only other real logical option in a real-world setting is China, and China just has a gigantic army with a fairly shitty air force and navy.

Secondly, I don't discuss the situation in Asia, Africa, or South America because World War III started less than a day ago as of the beginning of the RP, and they were not immediate targets of the Soviet attack, the Soviets initial strikes with WMD were focused on NATO. That said, it's a safe bet that just about all of the United States' allies were hit, particularly any country that has a U.S. or NATO military base.

As regarding your second point, my answer is yes. Elements of both will likely come into play, although the first arc will focus primarily on the former.

And Helicopters are of course relevant to warfare, but they're an entirely different war machine than a jet aircraft, they have the same problems as using an AC-130 Hercules in that they're comparatively slow and short ranged. An AH-64 Apache's max recommended speed is about 180 miles per hour, whereas nearly all jet fighter craft are supersonic, even sluggish aircraft like the A-10 exceed that by two and a half times.

I didn't want to attack you, sorry. I'm just attacked by all forms of media by "RUSSIA IS EVIL" in literature and games and now I see this, so I sigh and add a new phrase to my dictionary of life. I'm sorry if I've offended you.

It is too soon to discuss the rest of the world, therefore I assume we will have it unravel as we move forward. I was trying to pitch an idea of China violating Japan the same way Japan did sixty odd years ago.

Which is why I asked what kind of aircrafts we will be using, and it's good I asked! Now I know not to make helicopter pilots.
[hr]
Pitching an Idea-
A Female Israeli Combat Pilot sent in to learn from and teach her fellow pilots in the USA as a part of a plan of pilot exchanges. Her comrades died and she is the only one from her expedition to the USA that survived it this far. She's high emotional and explosive, she can change moods and snap at an instance which is when her training kicks in and she becomes virtually lethal in close combat. I'm not saying she will charge you if you have a pistol, but dear lord how do I love Krav Maga. I'm pretty sure Pilots in Israel go through some extensive training with firearms. Israel has had the largest dog-fights in recent history, which is why all pilots are trained in using their mounted guns with heavy munitions along their missiles. Expect to see downwards spirals and breaking points, soaring high and killing some nazis whatever you have lined up. They do go through survival training for when they are dropped behind enemy lines, which is why I trust she is competent to survive in this grim future...
I'll write the sheet later. Comments?

Name: Nickolai Gavrilov (Nick for short)

Callsign(since everyone else seems to have one): Raven

Age:30

Gender:Male

Nationality: American by birth(but only by a month) but still feels a strong connection to his parent's homeland.

Squadron & Aircraft of Choice: F-16c

Appearance: dark, buzz-cut hair, pale skin, clean-shaven, but always looks a bit scraggly due to his pale skin and abnormally dark facial hair. brown eyes with pronounced smile lines. 5'11, 160 lbs. has a small tattoo of a raven on his left shoulderblade.

Personality: mostly happy, joking, when off-duty, but on-duty he goes by the book as much as the situation allows, but is not above doing all that he can to win, if he feels the situation calls for it.

Background:Born to two Russian citizens who immigrated to America because there were better job opportunities for contractors, his mother was a draftswoman, while his father was schooled as an electrical engineer. Together they created their construction company in Montana, and were pretty successful. He was working as a summer brickbreaker when he found a love of flying after a weekend watching the nearby runway conducting test flights. He did everything he could to learn as much about flight as he could until he enrolled in college and joined the military for the extra grant money. He aced his tests, and was able to start flying by the time he was 25, he has a bachelor's degree in Russian Literature with a minor in Avionics. He knows his way around a construction site, and most building tools from a lifetime of living with his parents. He met his wife while in college, and married her three years later, they had a daughter together, luckily they weren't in the States during the time of the bombing, having left early for his base transfer to England. He keeps a picture of his family on his person at all times of a day the last day they were together. His daughter, Amelia,7, and his wife, Carrie.

Wasn't exactly sure if military bases were outside of the U.S. still in your altered timeline. Just tell me if anything needs to be changed. I thought having a Russian-American would be fun this early in the game.

Name: 1st Lieutenant Willow "Banshee" O'Donnell

Age: 25

Gender: Female

Nationality: American

Squadron & Aircraft of Choice: 48th Operations Group, 493d Fighter Squadron, aka "The Grim Reapers". Pilots the F-15C.

Appearance: 5'5", 125 pounds. She has light brown hair, which she wears to just below her ears, and blue eyes. Her flight suit is mainly black, with white accents. She has her squadron's insignia tattoo'd on the back of her left shoulder, with Acquiris Quodcumque Rapis (You reap what you sow) directly underneath it.

Personality: Willow is normally fairly easy going, but gets mad when shit starts going downhill quickly. She doesn't joke around in aircraft, and becomes dead serious when it looks like there's an engagement in the near future.

Background: She was born in Grantsburg, Wisconsin to an Irish father and a British mother, leading to her having a somewhat interesting accent, as well as the ability to speak both Irish and English (her father wouldn't have it any other way). Their home was about a block away from the local airport, leading to her having a great interest in becoming a pilot.

She took lessons after school, and had her pilot's license before she graduated high school. Willow attended college, where she studied Mechanical Engineering, getting her bachelor's degree with help from the US Air Force. She enlisted immediately after, and made it through basic and pilot's training in the top 5 of her class. She had always been partial to the sleek lines and predatory look of the Eagle, and so the Air Force pointed her in the direction of the 493d.

Willow has only had one mishap while flying: She was flying a solo training mission over the Nevada desert, and punched the burners to get to cruising speed quicker. Due to a malfunction in one of the engines, activating the burner caused it to catastrophically fail, leading to her having to eject. This incident did nothing to dampen her enthusiasm for piloting, but did teach her that shit happens even when your aircraft is kept maintained.

She is currently stationed at RAF Lakenheath, Suffolk, England, but was en route to attend the Red Flag wargame in Nevada when the bombs fell.

Oh -hell- yes.

Of course any criticisms or suggestions are welcome.

Name: 2nd Lt.Coup Lackland

Callsign: Warlord

Age: 35

Nationality: American

Squadron & Aircraft of Choice: 23rd Wing, 75th Fighter Squadron, "Tiger Sharks"- A10 Thunderbolt II

Appearance: Standing at 5'8 and 129lbs Coup is at his physical prime with a firm build. He has short, brown hair on the top of his head with clean-shaven face. He has the latin words "Ferre" tattooed on his left arm and "Ulscici" on the right. He has fiery, green eyes and calloused hands. He has the look of a caveman with his slight overbite and sharp brow but he is far from it.

Personality: Coup is calm and reserved both on and out of the cockpit of his A10. He can communicate with others but he has an air of detachment and coldness to him but really he does try to the trust the others around him and even attach a strong sense of camaraderie. Most of the time though, Coup is aggressive and often one to try and prove himself in battle by trying to one-up all the other pilots around him.

Background: Coup was born in Atlanta, Georgia to a father whose living room is adorned with medals and memorabilia of the "war" that he claims made him a man. Coup's father was a man too proud of the things he's done and Coup was raised by it. The need to prove one's self was engraved early into Coup's head and as a result Coup's aggressiveness was evident all throughout his life. He never once questioned his father's wishes for him even when he sent Coup away to military school without him knowing.

Coup underwent Air ROTC training and excelled as a cadet. He earned his wings and became a pilot to the 75th fighter squadron where he was trained to fly the A-10 Thunderbirds into combat. Multiple times he was and is known for his vivaciousness to excel in his career. Coup often it is noted as hyper-aggressiveness but his quiet nature baffles most people.

Before the bombs dropped, Coup was conducting a fly-by testing run of the A-10's cannon on a testing range.

Here's my sheet. This looks more awesome every time I see it.

Name: Chris Lorens

Age: 25

Call Sign: "Rebel"

Nationality: American

Squadron and Aircraft of choice: 366th fighter wing, 389th fighter squadron, "Gunfighters" F-16A Fighting Falcon

Appearance: Standing at 6'0" and weighing 200lbs, Chris is a big guy. Maybe not the biggest, but definitely bigger than average. He has short, light-brown hair and blue eyes. Chris wears the air force's grey flight suit with all the necessary patches. Chris does not have any interesting or notable marks.

Personality: Chris is mostly a quiet guy who would rather spend time alone with his own thoughts than go out partying, but he is nevertheless open to the idea. At first Chris is quiet, but once you meet him and become his friend, he will open up a lot more. Chris also prefers to look over tactics, maneuvers, and formations to see which is the best to use in any given situation. Chris also tends to let his honor make a few judgments. If an action has the possibility of damaging his honor, Chris will probably pass on it. When fighting, Chris will tend to let the enemy make the first move, and the more intense the fight, the better Chris becomes.

Background: Chris grew up in a small Georgia town with his parents and two sisters. His father showed him the military early on and Chris was instantly hooked. When he saw the air force in action on television, Chris fell in love with it. Once in high school, Chris joined his local Air Force JROTC unit, and was one of the top of his class, knowing some levels of discipline, leadership, and national pride.

Not having enough money to attend college, but having a great GPA and being physically fit, Chris decided to let the Air Force pay for his college through ROTC. Chris excelled, becoming a top member and leader, while at the same time graduating with his degree in computer science.

Once in the Air Force, Chris immediately signed up for pilot training, and went off for his numerous months of training. After he finished his training in the F-16A, Chris was put into the 389th. Chris' squadron was stationed at Mountain Home AFB when the bombs dropped, and he was flying a routine maintenance run to keep his bird oiled up.

Ospreys need a crew of four to fly it, or at least a pilot and a copilot.

You could have a really kick-ass pilot be able to fly the thing but it takes a whole other person to operate the belly-mounted minigun. :p

Name: Capt. Samantha 'Shodan' Hickok (Only lets friends and family call her Sam)

Age: 28

Gender: Female

Nationality: Canadian

Squadron & Aircraft of Choice: 19 Wing Comox, 411 Tactical Fighter Squadron 'Orca', Eurofighter Typhoon

Appearance: 5'9" and 155 lbs with short cropped blond hair, and green eyes. Sam has a black arm band tattooed on her right arm in memory of a friend who was killed over Libya during Operation MOBILE. Aside from the standard Canadian Forces flight gear; she also wears a milled titanium band on her right-hand middle finger (a gift from her girlfriend).

Personality: A generally friendly and warm person on the ground, Sam can become 'the Angel of Death', as a squadron mate put it, when she flies. A quick calculating mind, a near telepathic feel for her plane, and a bulldog's determination when she finds a target makes her a dangerous (and remorseless) fighter pilot.

Background: Samantha was born in Victoria, British Columbia to a family that just about lived in the air. With her father flying for a floatplane charter airline, and her mother an accomplished flight instructor, it was pretty much a given that she would fly as well. While her peers where still dreaming about being old enough to drive she was learning how to spin the little high-wing tail-dragger trainers.

By the time she'd graduated high school she had her private licence (on which she had single/multi-engine, IFR, and night ratings). While all this was fine for her, the one thing Sam really liked to do (especially while flying), was go fast. After announcing to her family that she was going to join the Air Force (which caused much more uproar then when she'd 'come out' a year ago), she threw herself into her post secondary education.

After much hard work, and admittedly some luck she was first accepted into Basic Flight Training, and then the Fast Jets program. During training she acquitted herself well for the most part; while her general 'academic' work was fine, and her scores in air-to-ground were average, her air-to-air ability was second to none. During ACM training she regularly 'killed' instructors, causing them much frustration, and making them single her out more. This in turn lead to her pushing herself to be even better. By the end of her training Sam was ranked first in ACM and fourth overall in her group.

(Her callsign came from a navigation exercise in the far north, during which a solar flare began to interfere with her jets radio causing disjointed, and according to some, eerie sounding transmissions from her when she tried to contact ground control.)

When NATO intervened in during the Libyan Civil War, elements from 411 Squadron where deployed to assist in aiding the rebel forces with air-to-ground strikes. During a mission to strike government forces, her flight was attacked by two flights of Su-35s from the ('surprisingly' well equipped) Libyan Air Force.

The ROE for the mission was to break and run if they were engaged as they were not loaded for ACM; unfortunately while the flight lead and his wingman managed to escape, the Libyans managed to cut Sam and her wingman off forcing them into a close range fight. Armed with only their tip mounted IR missiles and guns, the two dove into the fight in a desperate bid to stay alive.

Ten minutes later two flights of USAF F-22s and a flight of RAF Typhoons arrived, driving off or shooting down the remaining hostile aircraft, but not before they'd managed to shoot down Samantha's wingman and severely damage her jet.

She would later be credited with three kills, and one probable.
How's that?

Out of curiosity, are we allowed to choose the paint schemes on our aircraft, or is it going to be the standard military grey color?

And another question. Are we going to need to give a reason to be in the vicinity of Washington?
I'm not all that clear on military regulations regarding that kind of thing, but once the squadron assembles at the secret base, they're going to have access to paint and not be under a hell of a lot of regulations and restrictions, what with the breakdown of command. If somebody wants to paint up their A-10 to look like a shark, nobody's going to stop them.

As for prior to that, I really have no idea what the regulations are for that.

That said, if you're flying a B-2 Spirit of F-22 Raptor, I'm pretty sure painting it bright red might compromise some of the sneaky properties.

As for proximity, not really. Just make sure you're relatively close, as in 'Not in Japan' Closer if you're flying a craft that can't make ludicrously fast speeds.

Athol, I like the character, but the background just kinda stops in the middle. Maybe it's just me, it just feels like there's a sentence missing. Not really important, though.

Regarding Ospreys, you're going to be of sharply limited usage. While most flights will probably have both air to ground and air to air stuff, not every mission is going to have you able to ferry troops to or from the battlefield, so you'll either be a very vulnerable, useless target in some missions or sitting back at base with a thumb up your ass. It's like an AC-130 Hercules or a B-52 Stratofortress. It can be a lifesaver, but it's slow, bulky, and not suited to a good chunk of situations.

@Prince: Ok, ill make the appropriate mod to the cs, probly something about a multi squadron combat excersize in the States or something. As for paint schemes, I'm not sure either, but I did notice a lot of different ones when I looked them up.

Hmm... It just occurred to me that there are as of yet no aircraft here capable of landing on a carrier...

Scratch that, I lied. The Typhoon appears to be carrier capable.

I was thinking about it, but I figured I'd go for something a little less expensive... That said, the F15 is still a beautiful machine of war.

If Prince feels that we need another carrier capable fighter, I'd be willing to switch to the F/A 18E, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

EDIT: Edited my CS to give a reason for being in the US when the bombs fell.

Well, my idea for a character took a rather sharp turn...
Name: Roman "Aztec" Coronado

Age: 22

Gender: Male

Nationality: American

Squadron & Aircraft of Choice: 44th Fighter Group, 301st Fighter Squadron, F-22A Raptor

Appearance: Standing at an unimpressive 5'7" and weighing 133 pounds, Roman has a small frame with visible muscle definition. He has jet-black, short and cropped hair with a neatly-trimmed mustache and goatee. He has a tattoo of his squadron emblem on his right arm and the phrase "Fortes Fortuna Iuvat" on his left.

Personality: Although quite cocky, Roman isn't one to carry around a sense of superiority over others. He's a friendly person once one gets to know him and has been known to take few things seriously (he's always quick to make a joke or start cracking wise) other than his flying. Being an adrenaline-junkie since birth, he's never hesitated risking life and limb for his next big rush.

Background: Roman grew up in Northern Arizona in an upper middle-class Mexican-American family where he was brought up with a good set of moral values. Throughout school, he was dedicated to the work because he knew how much his parents valued his education and, though he'd never admit, he really enjoyed it.

During his later high school years, he began slacking in his work as he spent much of the time he should've been doing schoolwork by partaking in urban motorcycle races with his Suzuki Hayabusa or just cruising around on the freeways. He was smart enough to not get caught by speedtraps or unmarked cruisers as he learned to become somewhat of an expert spotter in that regard. Whenever cruising on his bike wasn't enough for him, he would take trips to go bungee jumping, base jumping, and even sky diving.

Noticing that Roman's grades were taking a fall, his parents brought up the fact that they wanted him to graduate with high honors so he could get a good career. Roman's respect for his parents led him to shape up and graduate admirably, or at least as admirable as one could with a B average, and made his parents content. It didn't take long after for him to realize that his life wasn't heading anywhere fast, for he hadn't made any plans or even goals for his future. He made the decision to find the rearest Air Force recruiter to enlist and soon found himself on the road to piloting an F-22A Raptor and where he is today.
