Acheivements are fun, like everyone else i agree with the orange box ones, espcialy the "fall 30.000 feet", it took about 10 minutes of falling.

If the game-makers put a few minutes into figuring out what would be fun acheivements they can add to games a little bit.

I thought about getting Call of Duty 4 for the PC, but then I thought, "Well, if I get it for 360 I can get achievements!"
That actually has pushed me over the edge on deciding which version of the game I purchase.

Generally, I like achievements that do one of two things:

First, achievements that give an indication of your overall progress through the game, so you can check out how far your friends have gotten. Oblivion was very good for this type, but didn't include anything else.

The second type is ones that give me some sort of goal, to encourage me to play the game a different way. The bowling achievement in Dead Rising is a great example, and it had others like that too.

I've actually found the ones in Mass Effect to encourage me to play through the game, and explore more, than I probably would have. I almost certainly would never have played an Adept if not for the achievements, so I've ended up getting a lot more playtime out of the game than I would have otherwise.

On the other hand, I really dislike achievements that involve doing terrible monotonous tasks, like the flags in Assassin's Creed, or ones that involve getting ridiculous numbers of things to happen, like the ones that require you to kill thousands of other players in multiplayer.

"Gamerscore" on the other hand, is stupid. I'd really prefer if it just showed the number of achievements unlocked instead of assigning them arbitrary point values.

Side Note: If you have an Xbox Live account, go to your forum profile [/profiles/edit] and put it in! We have a leaderboard/listing [/profiles/xbox_live.php] to find other posters to play with.

But it shows you the importance of an achievement. Here's three examples
1- Prey: every half hour they throw medium sized achievements at you. This makes you strive to get through, despite the most annoying protagonist ever.

2-The Orange Box: most points never cap 20, so getting a big number tells you "you are so L33T mister N00B POWNER!

3-quake: After becoming the top player in every ranked leaderboard in every game type, you get....... five points?!

Blow me.

The two I can't do in HL2 is the Don't walk on the sand and the gravity gun only in ravenholm. In episode 1: Use one bullet only?! I may gather the strength one day to pull that one off.
I love the achievements because i can sit back and say.
hmmm... got it, got it, got it too.
It's a big thing to me because I don't really like xbox live, so I spend my time amping up my gamerscore instead. I'm proud to say I've got every achievement in orange box

I don't play at all for the achievemants. I do think its cool doing random stuff then getting told I'm getting points for it.

My friends actually do care, and I'm all right with that, but a few of them are really hardcore and try to get all of the achievements in the game, then make fun of me for having only a few. That's when I point out why that makes them complete nerds/ really dorky individuals.

Achievement are a nice little thing that makes me play the game for longer.

I mean, I would play a game for my PS2 about once (I got some longish games, and my inability to play them for extended periods of time, so they last me about a month), and then leave it. If it was brilliant (see KH), then I'd probably play it again, but most likely, it'd rot.

For my 360 though, I come back to games a few times, just to get some achievements that I missed through. Now, I'm not gonna play a game 5 times through or so, but most games I have now, I'll replay about 2-3 times ('cept for ME, which I'll most likely play until I get all the achievements, or give up).

I have a love/hate relationship with achievements.
On one hand, I now have a general indictator how much I've seen of a game, and as a rule I try to get at least 500gp of a game before binning it. Oblivion, Bioshock and especially Dead Rising have been great at making achievements that push you to explore/experiment.

On the other hand, It is because of achievements i had to sit through 70+ hours of bore-fest Lost Odyssey. :(
I should of being playing Mario Galaxy instead, but the Wii doesnt make that 'Blip!' sound every half an hour.

I think the achievments are great. They add replay value and some of them are just plain fun to try and complete.

The only game were achievments were a waste of time was in NFS Most Wanted because all you had to do was beat each boss and finish the game.

Exactly. I would never have stuck around and attempted to kill Sander Cohen if it wasn't for an Achievement. It made me get into a place I didn't want to be whih was great. Sometimes they can get you playing longer and doing things you usually wouldn't bother with. Dead Rising and Mass Effect, like you stated, are also perfect eamples of this. I wouldn't of tried to most f the stuff in Dead Rising if it wasn't there. Sort of like the game telling you, "Hey, wouldn't be cool if yo did this?"

vegas 2, second i get it i go online, jump into a game.

Its villa, i quickly [2-3 deaths maybe] get the hang of it, and see 4 people camping the bathroom.

i frag the window, kill 3, and a little icon pops up "cluster bomb-10g"

"yeah, i've still got it."

I love achievements, they give me a new thing to aim for, or a new way to experience some of my favourite games.

Achievements are great but being a very offline gamer I hate seeing huge swathes of Achievement points set aside for Live play. This is the developer saying "you can never get more than 500-750 points from this game even if you are very good".

i like achievments, SOMETIMES. kingkong and generaly any came that came out near the launch of XBOX and didnt know what to do with them sucked. same with any game that just throws them in there randomly. somegames do a good job with them though. portal encouraged you to do the challenge maps, shadowrun made you try other play styles and just see more of the game in a good way. oblivion did some decent ones ( i forget alot of them) but they did make me beat all factions quests. and besides who doesnt love the funny ones. like SR teabagging achievment "shadowrun fever" or "irony of it all" or my other one that made me laugh was in RSV2 i was sneaking around with a silencer seeing how far i could get without getting in a gun fight. (harder then it sounds, i had to wait for for partrols to pass each other so i could get a 2 for 1 silenced headshot. then you get sam fisher achievment or something for 5 silenced headshots in a row.

I hate games that have both online and single player achievements. I don't have live so there's no way of getting them. Even if I rule at a game, I still won't be good enoigh to complete it through. I would rather just single player achievements or ones that run through both. Kill 5 guys in a row both online or off.

Necessary? No. Important? Yes. They're a valid reason to go back and play a game again, they add to the enjoyment that can be had from the game. All-in-all they're great fluff, and I'd hate to see them go.

Achievements are a good addition to just playing the game for the fun of it. I especially like when you're not aiming for one and then it appears at the bottom of the screen, but I also aim for some occasionally. You can't get 1000/1000 on Assassins Creed by pure luck!

Some of them are even "acheivements" for playing exceptionally badly. An example. In the 360 version of Hitman : Blood Money (Back when the 360 was getting its ass whupped by the Ps2) apparently there is an "acheivement" for killing 47 innocent civilians. Now I ask you, what the fuck?
Considering achievements are only secret until the first person to post online about them completes it, that's pretty poor, but still... if you're not an avid forum infiltrator then wondering what the hell that secret achievement is for days and weeks is worth it when you finally 'achieve' it.

Achievements are a good idea that Sony should have implemented on the PS3. it's your own little graffiti tag and gives you a bit more incentive to play games again to unlock more points.
