I would liked it better if they were more uniform. I will never get Bring down the Sky for Mass Effect since my 1000g looks much nicer than 1050.
...I think that's what's wrong with achievements.
Yes there should be a way to seperate DLC achs from the main game achs. My Oblivion score is 1000 out of 1250 when I never bought the expansions. That ain't right!
What I was implying by that was that someone wouldn't buy the DLC because their gamerscore would look wrong. Even worse was my friend was put off buying Fifa 09 because of all of the achievements ending in 9.

Achievements are so-so with me, I mean they do give you a feeling of hey I just 100% a game and now I can see it when ever I boot up the console. But on the flip-side I miss the days when people would replay games because they were genuinely fun, not because they want that last achievement so they can wave their gamer score in people's faces online.

TL;DR

Achievements are basically the only reason people play games a second time through.

Oh you mean the whole gamerscore ending in a 5 or a 0. I avoid any game that has wacky numbered achs (any that end in a 5 or a 0 are fine but nothing else). Took me forever thanks to Crash Bandicoot to fix it and I will never let it happen again.

Me?? No I try and keep myself well informed on what is going on with games and have unlimited rentals at Blockbuster a few blocks away for $30 a month. I am a curious fellow and will rent a "bad" game just to see how bad it is. But someone somewhere is buying these games. Otherwise Gamestop (or reasonable facimiles) wouldn't have used copies on thier shelves. I would like to think these people are buying these games because they are rich achwhores because the alternative is quite worse.
Worse. And true. Which is why the Wii is so successful.
I dunno about that. I picture the majority of Wii only owners like gamers were back in the nes/snes days. Back when we didn't have things like a septillion reviews and other assorted information and bought our games based soley on word of mouth or how cool the box covers looked. Hell I remember buying Dragon Warrior because it had the word Dragon in the title. I was clueless on what I was getting into. I loved it but I had no idea before I bought it
Yes, but how many bad games did you buy? And, the sad fact is, that the Wii is successful in the shitty games department. I mean Carnival Games, 1 million?
That is the kicker. There wasn't really any good or bad to me at the time. There was OMFG hard and easy. Not because I was young because I was in my teens but because I was just happy to have a game to play. Ignorance is bliss.

But now we have reviews, and the really poor games are still getting high sales. Slightly off-topic... perhaps the developers should get an achievement for that

The problem is reviews have oversaturated the market. Go to IGN and look at half thier reviews. US version 6, AU version 8 (just an example but there are reviews like that there). They are the same game reviewed by 2 different people. So you go to the user reviews and pretty much get any number you want. Give me a title and a number and I would be willing to bet I could find a review that gave said title said score (round numbers and no I am really not going to :p ). We have a general pallette for reviewing books or movies. Sure it may not be for everyone but most people can agree this is what made this movie good or bad. Games are all over the place.

And don't forget some sites may review a game unfairly to attract more traffic. OMFG they gave GTA 4 a 7???? I must go to thier site, sign up and spam thier forums while they are rolling around naked in all that ad revenue they are getting.

And I almost forgot Victor Lucas (Reviews on the Run). He will sit there and rip a game a new one all through the review. Not say 1 positive thing about it. Then turn around and give the game a 6 or better. It takes a truly horrible game (like Chicken Shoot for the Wii) for him to give it lower than a 5.

Sorry Vic I don't mean to single you out there. I am still a fan of your shows. I just don't listen to the numbers

Only gripe I have with achievements/trophies are that the PS3 doesn't show progress on them. -_-

I think they're both. I like em cause they give games reply value and I'm a big fan of shiny things that don't do anything. But then I hate em cause some of them are just pointless to an unparalled extreme but cause I'm such an achievement whore I have to get them and then I feel soiled for having debased myself so badly to get it. Peter Molyenux I'm looking at you >-o

Meaning you bought Pub Games to get the Completionist achievement? Or you found five friends to swap dolls? Or both...

i like them, gives ideas to do certain fun things in a game. Banjo kazooie Nuts'n'bolts has some of the best achievements i've seen in a game, a mix of fun/silly achievements, and the somewhat more standard ones

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/game/banjo-kazooie-nuts-and-bolts/achievements/

mirrors edge ones where quite good too.

I hate them because they removed one thing that is more worthwhile to unlock cheats. I know that in some games that there is cheats but they disable the achievments. Which is redundant because why would one reward cancel out another?

What? If you mean it stops you from the cheats... just go a bit without them. Is it really that hard?

As a self-confessed achievement whore, I am a self-confessed achievement whore.
However I'm also lazy so I have no 1000/1000 games yet.

I have no idea how trophies work. What does that mean, doesn't show progress?
Take a game like Killzone 2 where one of the trophies is to kill X amount of helghast. If you look at the trophy list on the Trophy menu, it won't tell you how many you've killed thus far, meanging you have no idea how close you are to earning said trophy. Hope that helps.

Well, apparently, I heard a rumor a couple months ago that GamerScore Points will soon actually have an effect on the LIVE's system...not sure how, but that's what I've heard from a couple people.

Other than that, I LOVE achievements. It's just to add a little sense of accomplishment, nothing more. I don't see anything wrong with that.
