It seems like everyday I find a new thread or 2 asking why people like getting achievements. It always seems like the tone of the question that there is something evil or wrong about getting them. Or wanting to get them. And usually there is at least one who throws down some kind of insult towards people who like them. So my question is why do people care so much about something so small that another enjoys? Why do ach/trophy whores affect you so personally?

And to counter the first arguement before it starts it isn't an ach/trophy's fault that people can be douchebags and say crap like my gamerscore is so big that means I am some uber gamer. That is a "other people's children" problem which was happening long before achievements were thought of.

Im not really fused about acievements, its more of a personal thing for me, just to say ive done it and i can do it.

Gamerscore is also kind of obselite as a whole anyway because it also can depend on the amount of games you play for example i only play a few games ALOT and have almost got all the achievements but someone who isnt as good as me might have 30 games. I realise im going into a tiny debate here but what im tryin to say is its really i personal thing, personally anyway

I like to get Gamerscore as to get the achievements you have particular targets to aim for, and it offers a sort of incentive. I only try hard to get achievements I know I'll have fun doing though, like completing Resident Evil 5 on hard. I won't put effort in to get 50,000 kills in Gears of War, that's ridiculous.

It a way of displaying your gaming talents to others and gives the player a sense of pride.

I cant imagine why anyone would dislike them, but I do admit that when I see someone with a 20000 gamerscore (as you called it, an ubergamer), i kinda get a little upset about how unreasonably large a number that is. But there is still no reason for anyone to dislike them, especially since they add replay

I have a theory that part of it is a backlash back to the days when people would just expound on their greatness(similar to fishermen).

"One time, I got a high socre ::THIS BIG::, No, I can't show it to you, the arcade is in another state, and they had a blackout, so it's gone."

Everything is ultimately pointless.
Don't question achievements unless you want to fall into a spiral of depression.

I don't do them because I think it makes me a better gamer, I do it because it gives me something to do, sometimes I get bored of just online matchmaking and I want something to do. I have 11,000+ gamerscore and I'm proud of it because that is what I did while I played the games.

It's just my nature to go for achievements. Many MMOs have a system similar to achievements, such as Badges in City of Heroes and Tome Unlocks in Warhammer Online, and I liked working towards those as well. They're just fun and add replay value. I don't try for any ridiculously hard achievements, though; just the ones that are quick and fun.

It's the perfect counter to the "pics or it didn't happen" question of video games: you did something crazy/notable and it's in stone.

I am willing to admit I am, what my friends call, an "Achievement Whore". I always go for achievements and I plan out which ones I'm going to get first. For example, when I go home next weekend (I'm in college) I'm going to pick up a copy of Resident Evil 5. I saw some of the achievements I could get and I've recently made a list of ones I can get out of the way early. But the main reason I do it is because it's to show I my what I have achieved.

Its a simple dick waving competition, simple as that.
The more points you have the bigger a dick you are Ha Ha Ha.

Stunning logic, that.
It's the only thing that makes sense to me, what other purpose do they have?
Some are fun to get. I try to get achievements that aren't completely ridiculous because there's a stupid sense of satisfaction seeing the "Achievement unlocked!" thing pop up. Why? I don't know. I'm sure some people brag about having 53464 achievements but others do it just to have them.

Its like any other award given.
Its tangible evidence that you did something, therefore giving you the right to rub it in your friends faces and make fun of them for not having it. Its like getting a certificate with your collage diploma, yeah the fact that you have it is more important, but because you can hang it on your office wall to show everyone how "smart" you are, It acts as a visual representation.

Granted, trophy level and gamerscore, are not nearly as important as a diploma, but you get my drift.

I don't use them, personally (no XBox or Playstation 3). They intrigue me, but honestly, it's just a big e-peen waving contest to me.

"My gamerscore is X."
"My gamerscore is Y!"

Yeah, well, what does your gamerscore do other than sit there and collect bits?

I guess but still, some are just plain pointless and unnecessary and the people that get those are the true dick wavers.

Why do people care what games/genres people other than them play? Why do people care about what consoles other people play? Why do people care that a company whose games they have no interest in is popular? Why do we come to forums like this to post these sorts of questions?

No idea. But the answer to all of the above is probably pretty much the same.
