I think someone is jealous. Maybe if they spent the same time and effort Rockstar puts into GTA on call of duty, they might be able to do it.

Yeah, I don't think it will, actually. My guess is this is where we're going to see the start of the Decline of the CoD Series.

My first reaction was to insta-laugh at this but then, I don't know, COD has a sizeable fanbase. It's extremely, highly, unbearably UNLIKELY, but not downright impossible.

Can't see it, MW2 and on ward all had a phenomenal amount of hype behind them and black ops 2 was the first to not beat its predecessor. I've read a lot of comments saying they have no interest in ghosts, I'm one of them. It's got 0 positives in its favor, it's big innovations are female characters and a dog (even though dogs are killed streaks in other games)... It's big claim was "new engine" but it turned out to just be a heavy rebuild of the old engine.

People have got tired of got tired of cod and It's trying to out perform the fastest selling piece of media ever? (is it also the best selling?) it has no fucking chance!

If any fps has a chance to beat gta it will be titan fall but that is Microsoft exclusive, so unlikely. The only none fps I see dethroning gta will be watch dogs, it's multi platform, kind of like gta but has enough to interest people and it's had hype for years! The only problem I see for it is the dreaded over hype.

Could be. It would've made more sense for them not to make this statement, because if they don't beat that record it will mean that they failed to achieve their goal.

I hope that Activision is wrong. I do want to see that publisher get put in its place.

I don't see it as being a cocky statement, more jovial and lightly competitive in a jokey way.
I don't think this game will sell nearly as well simply because the marketing is no-where near as expansive where I live. For GTA I saw bus adverts, TV adverts, shelter adverts, cinema adverts, internet adverts- it was one hell of a hype train. Ghosts I barely see anything unless I look for it. I wish Ghosts the best, Call of Duty is to me a great franchise, but I think they're taking their fame for granted a bit too much.

Jealous or not, it is VERY possible. Not 100%, but chance is still out there. We're gonna see very soon.

yeah not going to happen, in this case even if CoD was at the height of its popularity there's the fact that Activision is releasing Ghosts on Ps4 and Xbox 1 just a few weeks later, enough people are going to be holding off in order to get it on next gen. GTAs records are for first day and first week sales, the next gen releases are probably going to take too big a chunk out of Ghosts first day sales for it to beat GTA in the records department.

I could see Ghosts holding the record for highest sales for the PS4 and Xbox 1 for quite a while though, I imagine that game will move at least a few systems.

Maybe if they raise the price by 20$ per cop.... Wait are they doing that standard , more pricey for no reason and insanely pricey version of the game again this year? If so then they got a better shot than anyone else.

Pretty much the only thing they've got going that would support this claim would be the fact that it's going to be one of the first titles for the new generation. Beyond that, however, it seems to me (read: I could be entirely wrong) that interest in CoD has been waning over the past couple games. I think people are starting to get burnt out on it the same way people are starting to get burnt out on WoW. Note that WoW is still considered to be extremely successful and I'm sure that Ghosts will be very successful as well. But claiming you'll take out GTA 5 is a pretty tall order.

All I know is that I stopped playing BLOPS 2 about a month after it came out, everyone on my friends list was soon to follow, and even my brother - whose entire Xbox library consists of CoD games - only played BLOPS 2 for a few months. Could be just a bad game in the line, but as I mentioned: I think it's a sign that interest is starting to decline.

To borrow another sort of "cult" following as an example. GTA is like Hulk Hogan or the Rock, yeah, its a game/wrestler, but everybody knows who they are. CoD is something more like a John Cena, popular within that cadre, but where you're highly unlikely to have any reason to know who the hell they are outside of the following involved.

that sounds like something Activision would say and while I have trouble thinking it is all that likely I also didn't expect them to top themselves in initial sales each year like they've done.

I think it's extremely unlikely. Based on a lot of what I've read, the high sales numbers for GTA V were a fluke, more than anything else. There were people who had the game pre-ordered from an online retailer who went out to the midnight launch and bought a copy, with the intention of selling their second copy, when it showed up later that day. As devoted as the Call of Duty fanbase is, it's not the kind of release that's going to prompt people to pick up multiple copies.

V also has the distinction of making money really fast. How long did it take the game to hit the billion dollar mark, a week? Ghosts is unlikely to hit that, because, in reality, it's kind of splitting its audience. It's launching during a console transition. I mean, I suppose a few diehards might pick up the game at its initial launch, and then again when they pick up their new consoles, but out of the CoD market, I don't know how many of those are the kind of people who are going to pick up Ghosts on launch day, and then a second copy of Ghosts along with a new console a week or two later. That would pretty much have to be Activision's hope, though, if they really want the game to top V.

So, yeah. Unlikely. And if it manages it, it would be extremely impressive, but unlikely.

Bingo, GTA V also still has its (theoretical) next gen and PC releases in reserve to be dropped at a later date, Ghosts may pull a bigger 'first to a billion' run with 7 platform releases in November but Rockstar still has three (including the untapped PC market) in reserve.

Who cares? COD will probably make more profit on Day 1 as it's a far cheaper game to make than GTAV.

Doesn't Ghosts have leaning and sliding now? One of the main reasons I don't play COD because it's FPS gameplay isn't good, every FPS should have leaning and sliding is awesome. Leaning and sliding aren't really innovations, but things COD should already have but doesn't.

Yes, it will. It will most likely shatter GTA5's records, even if it takes a little bit longer. This is coming from someone who absolutely hates CoD and how it's dragging down the entire video game industry, and I don't like the GTA series either. But why do I think the newest slab of mediocrity will sell so well. Three simple words: People are morons.
