Activision: Infinity Ward Will Rise From the Ashes

Despite the disarray that Infinity Ward is in right now, Activision believes that it will be the source of great franchises in the future.

The dismissal of Vince Zampella and Jason West from Modern Warfare 2 [http://www.amazon.com/Call-Duty-Modern-Warfare-Xbox-360/dp/B00269QLI8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1278435090&sr=1-1] developer Infinity Ward prompted more than 30 staff members to jump ship, with many joining West and Zampella's new studio Respawn Entertainment. But Activision Executive Vice President of Studios David Stohl says that the studio is rebuilding, and preserving what made it great in the first place.

"It is still a huge recruiting drive. I've been a development guy for a long time, right? Recruiting at IW is not a problem," he said. "What we're trying to do is say that IW is a culture, it's a way of doing things, there's a lot of people there and there's still a lot of passion for doing it ... new people are coming in and we're setting the bar so high. And we're making sure it fits with the culture of what IW actually is. So far, so good."

Stohl is confident that the "new" Infinity Ward will continue to produce quality games, and will expand beyond the Call of Duty franchise: "There is definitely a strong shooter philosophy there, for sure. And I think that there's a short- and long-term view on the whole thing. But I think we're rebuilding a studio that can go off and build great new franchises in the future."

While few would say that the circumstances that prompted this injection of new blood into Infinity Ward were at all desirable, there's no reason that its work won't continue to be highly enjoyable. It won't make the games it would have had this whole business not happened, but different doesn't automatically mean bad.

To be honest, despite my love for infinity ward I think it needs to die and join respawn entertanment. A big middle finger to activision for what they did.

I'll be looking at the output IW and Respawn comes up with, well actually the entire industry and the hardcore gamers will all be keeping a close eye on developments, I probably wont buy the games though.

It fits the culture of what IW actually is?

And what is that exactly? Making very successful games with huge backlash? Getting screwed over royally?

This culture thing is confusing!

It already has; I believe it's called Respawn Entertainment and they're now partnered with EA.

Tough luck Activision, that's what you get when you pillage every idea and dev. team until there's nothing left - and then don't pay them duly for their efforts.

I can just assemble a team of five people and we'll call ourselves Interplay. Will Activision then say that Interplay has risen from the ashes?
News flash, the main part of the studio is not the name, not the license, but the people working there.
And you have lost pretty much every creative lead and director.
So, yeah, WRONG!!!

Oh Activision, you humour me,
with your hilarious tongue-in-cheek jokes about adding subscription fees for online COD play
and now saying Infinity Ward will "rise again."
Oh wait, you were being serious?
Shit.

Yeah, sure it will!

Next thing you know, Valve will start releasing games on schedule, and Blizzard wont take more than a decade to make sequels!

Of course, then we have to worry about the price of skiing lessons in Hell, but that comes with the territory.

Does not compute. So let me get this right...After losing the people that originally created MOHAA and then left for Activision for COD1-6...they think they can replace them? haha yeah right. I think not. Unless they get some people from Treyarch to help out.

And I'm guessing those franchises will get milked to death aswell? Not only have Activision killed Infinity Ward, they killed it's baby too. Nice going.

Can't we just let the FPS genre of todays gaming market just fade away and die? What happened to the diversity that we all have come to love and enjoy from previous generations alike?
