The new Doctor is fine, but there are at least a few other actors who I'd rather have play the Doctor. The top is Patrick Stewart. The second is any good actress, just for variety. Third is William Shatner.

Wait... I think I'm sensing a pattern.

Like Kate Mulgrew?

Then, you can add some diversity, and the next Doctor could be an actor of color. Like Avery Brooks.

I prefer it when the Doctor is played by some relatively unknown up-and-coming actor/actress. That doesn't mean that they necessarily have to be young, just low profile.

I like my Doctor to just be the Doctor rather than 'Patrick Stewart as the Doctor.'

I could probably express this in a more articulate way but hopefully you understand what I mean.

Even though I don't watch the show I'd like to see Richard Ayoade since he's;
A) Black
B) So non-threatening it'd be funny to see how modern TV accepts him in a "serious" role.

You got your Star Trek in my Doctor Who!

I'm not a huge Doctor Who fan, but Christian Bale would be amusing for a year. It's time to put some bad ass into the Doctor.

Alternatively, they could make an actual season out of this little charmer.

Actually, that's my pick. Lets get Rowan Atkinson in on this.

After seeing his performance as Ford Perfect, I'm very very pro-Mos Def.

I mean, he basically already plays the Doctor in that movie. Though I wonder how he'd be different from Matt Smith in terms of characterization.

I don't watch the series but I keep imagining Paddy Considine as my idea of The Doctor. Or Chris O'Dowd. One of those blokes.

As a rule, I agree, but since I was a young'un, I really wanted to see Roger Daltrey of the Who play Doctor Who (Yes, I know he's not Doctor Who, he's the Doctor, but still).

I especially think that actors like Shatner and Stewart would dominate the role. Double especially for Shatner.

I'd like to see Alan Rickman do it. Personally I like Capaldi, but then I preferred Ecclestone too. I prefer there to be a dark viciousness about the character. Smith tried too hard to be wacky, and Tennant because a parody of himself

Just to inject a note of realism here, the Dr will never be played by an American. Casting a yank will cause a riot and the producers to be thrown off the roof of broadcasting house. The other thing to remember is who gets to play the Dr has to be cheap, so no one with a knighthood or damehood. However much Helen Mirren says she wants to play the Dr, she isn't going to spend 18 weeks filming in Cardiff for less then she gets for 1 week in the westend.

Hmmmm. I would not have thought of this one, but I do really like the nomination of Mos Def. I'm not sure how good his English accent is, which may be too much change for some fans, but I've seen him in Hitchhiker's, and another film called 16 blocks (with Bruce Willis) and his performances are quite good.

Pretty much this.

No matter how much someone may wish it, The Doctor will always be British.

With that said .... Vinnie Jones because, I have no reason other than I want to see him headbutt a Cyber Man.

I thought the new doctor sounded Scottish, not British...?

Scotland's part of Britain, so he's British for these purposes.

Going to have to go with the almighty overlord Geoff Younger (Steven Blakely) from the Yorkshire drama series heatrbeat (also the trainline adverts.)-

If they decide to go back to young white male who, he's your man.

I think Richard Ayoade is a fantastic idea!

I'd also quite like someone like Helen Mirren (although she's obviously got better opportunities) basically an older woman who is also attractive and dignified.

I don't care who plays the Doctor as long as he or she is:
A. British (English, Welsh, Scottish)
B. Not so well known that the actor overshadows the character
C. A decent actor

For the elucidation of Mr BoogieManFL and other aliens, British means English, Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish. Its the collective name for subjects of the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
