I'd say Idris Elba, but I don't know. Like, I enjoy the idea of the Doctor being played by a relative nobody... and I'm pretty sure he doesn't qualify. Still, he's a damn good actor, and I think he could sell the hell out of the role, and give it some serious dramatic weight.

Another possibility, Bill Nye. The science guy.

(I mean, I'd certainly get a kick out of it.)

I thought the new doctor sounded Scottish, not British...?
For the elucidation of Mr BoogieManFL and other aliens, British means English, Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish. Its the collective name for subjects of the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
I was under the impression that if you went to a town in Scotland and asked if they were Scots or Brits, they'd say Scots. So if an English actor emigrated to the US and became an American Citizen, they couldn't play The Doctor then by that logic. Seems kinda weird. With that kind of logic, Idris Elba couldn't have had the chance to do so well at the role of Heimdall in the Thor series.

All-American type characters in TV shows here in the US are commonly played by people from all over the world. I'd say let a character be played by any actor if they would do a good job and who cares where they are from.

How about Dwayne Johnson? Who wouldn't want to see The Doctor suplex some Daleks... Just kidding but that would be kind of kickass.

Can you smell what The Doc is cookin'?!

British is not an synonym of English, they mean to different things. Being from florida does not mean you are not American, anymore than than being from Scotland means you are not British. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_people

No American TV network is funded by universally mandated annual fee of £145.50. If you watch tv you have to £145.50 to the BBC regardless of if you watch any of their offerings. US tv is not the same as UK tv.

After seeing his performance as Ford Perfect, I'm very very pro-Mos Def.

I mean, he basically already plays the Doctor in that movie. Though I wonder how he'd be different from Matt Smith in terms of characterization.
I guess you could say he....

Most definitely suits the role.
