Wow, really? Seem they got their claws in quite deep in this profiting market. Lets just hope the socialized health-care will help tackle this problem; it SHOULD stop claims of illness for the doctors' benefit.

But you never know. I'm sure those greedy pigs will find some way of taking advantage of the socialized system.

I'm not very in the loop with the whole health care situation right now, but I'm pretty sure that there was a modified bill made that specifically said no socialized healthcare and that people who can't get insurance will need to get it. So yeah, not very much improvement in that department.

I was told by several of my teachers that I had ADD since I couldn't pay attention in class and I would never do my homework.

I passed with flying colors, but that didn't stop them from putting me on Ritalin, so to show them what it does to kids, one morning before school I popped about 8 of my 50mg pills.

yea, it wasn't pretty, afterwords I told them that I indeed was taking it as they recommended, and that it would continue. I was taken off of it soon afterwords.

also, yes, there needs to be more strict diagnostic guidelines for identifying ADD or ADHD, since my problem was that I wasnt being challenged hard enough in school. I have seen kids with real ADD/ADHD, and it isnt pretty, and it pisses me off that almost everyone will claim that they have it or a form of it online to be "different".
I'm no expert on Ritalin, but wouldn't that much Ritalin pretty much kill you? I mean, 8 50mg pills of the stuff. Damn.

They never actually tested me for it, since I appearently was considered so smart that I would look it up thorpoughly, and once I knew what the full blown version was I might actually develop it simply because I would think I had it. Yeah, weird excuse :p So I haven't been tested, and I'm living a completely normal life. This concludes with me not really having it badly enough for me to be able to claim that I have it :p

As someone who's been diagnosed and heavily medicated for ADD, I think I can say that ADD is a symptom of crappy schooling, not mental deficiency. Standardization, overly-large classes, stupid criteria... give me a reason to pay attention in the first place.

I can focus perfectly well on something that actually interests me, and the medication didn't help me focus on anything I didn't care about. Adults are prescribing amphetamines to children because we were bored with the things they try to cram our heads full of.

EDIT: To cover my own ass, I'd like to point out that I'm painting with a broad brush, here. Of course there are going to be genuine cases, but as far as I'm concerned, ADD is a moneypit for the pharmaceutical industry, and we all know how much they and the government love to finger-fuck. That means that nobody with the power of oversight is going to step in and say "hey, really, guys? Everybody has it, now?", because the government gets huge cut of the profits. God bless 'Murrika.

lol, ADD didn't exist back in our parents day. If you couldn't pay attention or sit still, you got a slap to the back of the head or you get your mouth cleaned out with soap......and guess what, you didn't act up and you worked just fine. Know what else that sounds like? Nintendo. Are you seeing a trend here.
You can't slap consoles anymore, it'll mess up the disc and the insides, same thing essentially happens if you slap a child now a days. Things were made with higher quality standards back in the day....children included.
The real question is, "What do you do, if your kid Red Rings?".
That was pretty brilliant. I wish I'd thought of that.

I fucking hate the time I live in.
Back in the day men were men, and parents brought their children up RIGHT. Misbehavior doesn't mean that there's something wrong with a child, it means you didn't hit 'em hard enough!

Well didnt people with percieved behavior problems just use to be dubed as attention seekers back when these things where not understood properly and it seems now that they are over used.

I've observed over the years that anybody who exhibits a minor problem with paying attention or a small hyperactive tendency is immediately diagnosed with either ADD or ADHD.

This is just a small gripe I have, as I have ADD bad (my brother has it worse). we're talkin' not being able to sit still and listen to jack shit for more than a few seconds bad.

Whereas pretty much every kid I know supposedly has it even though they have near prefect grades and are probably some of the most relaxed people I know (off medication, mind you).

Now I'm not going to tell you all that ADD is a horrible affliction that ruins your life etc. But what I will say is that it can be... Tiring. To say the least and that it kinda makes me mad that every doctor calls every kid that wants to be loud and have fun hyperactive.

I personally think there should be clearer guidelines for ADD and ADHD.

Okay, I'm done bitching in circles now.
That piss me off too.
I got a nephew that's just 2 years old and he enough energy to pick me up and run to Cuba. Yes, i know that an Island, that's the point. But my sister is have become Lazy. If he misbehave, he just have to run far enough from her so she wouldn't bother. That the problem parent have to face and they found answer in drug. I have stated in another thread that 1/10 kid really need it but 6/10 get medication. The problems isn't the kid's energy but the parent's laziness. This have to change otherwise, all kid will be under medication from birth.

I think it might be more a case of ADD isn't helped by the education system. Class sizes in the UK are generally 30-40 kids, I believe, which is just a ridiculous number. I much preferred it when I got to Sixth Form and classes were maybe 10-15 at most, and that would have been a big class.

I wish they'd stop running schools like businesses and run them as they're meant to be run. I don't see why money should be an object when we're talking about the education of our children.

I felt like I use to have that... Here is a example of what happens a lot of me: In second grade the teacher was like "Okay did you do that book report everybody" and i am like "WHAT?! WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN?!" I am so glad it isn't so strong anymore. A hour can pass by and I would be like "Huh what happened, I was zoned out." It was a great way to pass by school time, bad way to get good grades.

Yeah it's getting annoying from where I am. In high school almot every friend of mine supposedly "had" ADD or ADHD. They would use it to explain anything that they did wrong finding someway to blame it on their "disorder." I told them the only disorder they were suffering from way being a tool and acting like a 5 year old all the time. Ranting aside though, my college psych prof said something like ADD and ADHD are the most overdiagnosed things out there

as I said, it wasnt pretty. In case if you were wondering also, Ritalin is essentially legalized speed [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amphetamine].
I knew that much, but... Damn.

Yeah, I have ADD but I'm usually on meds (I take Adderall for it) so it's difficult to tell, but when I'm off them I'm as bad as OP. I've realized how easy it would be to get at those meds, and considering how many people abuse Ritalin and such, I thought they'd be taking more precautions than they are. Here's how my doctor diagnosed it. I came in and said `I think I have ADD'. He prescribed me a month of the medication, saying `come back in a month and tell me if this helps. If it does, I'll keep prescribing it for you. If it doesn't do anything, you don't have ADD.' Seriously? I think that's just stupid. The diagnosis for ADD is whether or not the med works? That makes no sense, think about it. That would mean that everyone who ever abused Ritalin or anything, also has ADD, because otherwise it wouldn't have any effect, according to my doctor. I agree with OP, there should be more strict guidelines for this.
