It seems every time my friends and I flit to an old favourite game everyone but me has trouble remembering the old buttons. For a good half hour we're all at increased risk of friendly grenades and other laughable mishaps.
Now I don't want to toot my own horn, but this has never been a problem for me. In most other respects I'm a pretty average gamer, but I never have trouble remembering button configurations. Sure, it's not totally intuitive: there's a split second pause as I double check whether Left 4 Dead 2's crouch is where I think i- oh I see it is! But I've never actually thrown a grenade when I meant to crouch or something.
What about you guys? Do you have problems, how long do they last, and what happens in the relearning period? Bonus points for funny stories.

It's only if I play two similar games with different control schemes. That's when the mix ups and accidental grenades happen.

Only happens for me when it's a sequel or something.

Like in Mass Effect 2, it bugged me to no end that sprint was also "Use".

I agree... honestly first person shooters should just agree on a control scheme for consoles already, no matter how "different" the games are they generally have the same functions. Everyone knows that LT is zoom and RT is shoot, but they are constantly mucking around with the other stuff.

I know I wanted to crotch punch fallout 3 when I realised Y was jump and not the normal A button... highly annoying, A is for jump, it always should be! if your game has basically the same actions as most other games, just use a standard control scheme!

I can generally remember every different control set I use across games, although I get vaguely confused with similar layouts if it's been a while since I've used one.

One of the main things I envy PC gamers for is fully customisable control layouts, it's something I really appreciate when it's available in games.

Usually it only takes me like half an hour before I'm pro at the controls. Sometimes even less ^^ So I don't get bothered.

Goddamn Killzone 2.
My first PS3 game, and after the 360's trigger as opposed to R1 to shoot and R2 to throw grenades it was a nightmare.
Thank God for different control schemes.

When playing the bad company 2 beta, I always press R2 when I want to switch to the grenade launcher. It's the D-pad, but I always press wrong.

Also, who's idea was it to have the knife button on R2? I would've perfered it to be on circle, since you're not using it for anything anyway (Except when entering veichles and picking up weapons, but really, is that so bad?).¨

Edit: The worst case of this for me was probably when I had, for the last 3 days, been playing through Assassins Creed 2. After I had done a few trophies and completed the game, I switched to Uncharted 2. It was a nightmare. In AC2 you run fast when pressing x + R1. In Uncharted 2, x + R1 means you will jump and shoot at the same time, while looking like a retard.

God that match was horrible. I became good again though on the second match again.

Nothing involving crouch, but I was playing farcry 2 for the first time in months so to switch weapons I instinctively hit "y" which did nothing, so i hit RB and threw a grenade. I was in a skype call at the time with my friend who was a big fan of the game so from his perspective, the sound that proceeded was "*boom* (angry NPC gibberish)*lots of machinegun fire* SHITSHITSHITSHITSHIT! HOW DO I CHANGE WEAPONS! HOW DO I CHANGE WEAPONS!?!?!?!?!?!" Stupid D pad...

Back when I was playing Battlefield 1942. The parachute button defaults to 9 for some reason.

Always forgot to rebind it whenever I re-installed.

I always change the controls to fit my liking, so if a game comes along which doesn't let you change the controls, then things get... annoying

After playing through all (and I mean all) of Fallout 3 I went on to MW2 and reflexivley hit V at the begining of every combat.

Yes, absolutely. Worst time I've had is going from driving in Borderlands to driving in Brutal Legend. The two control schemes are different in every way except for steering and acceleration, so you think you have it right until you go to do something. Also skipping between Borderlands and Demon's Souls was horrible, Demon's Souls being such a tight game at times, you can't afford to lose muscle memory on which button does what.

I hate how the action button always seems to change in games, so many times I have played split screen halo 3 with some friends only to find myself activating bubble shields when i want to reload.
