Back when I was playing Battlefield 1942. The parachute button defaults to 9 for some reason.

Always forgot to rebind it whenever I re-installed.
Heh, I would always forget if it was 9 or 0 and would end up spamming both those numbers every time I jumped out of a plane.

One of the main things I envy PC gamers for is fully customisable control layouts, it's something I really appreciate when it's available in games.
I haven't played a console game in ages, but I was wondering why they don't also have customizable layouts. It can't be that hard and it's something people always clamour for. Seems like a no-brainer.

I have a PS3, and I'm competent at playing MW2 on it.
At work we only have a 360 set up, and there was a little competition on who could clear a Special Ops level the fastest.

I couldn't cope with the fact that the shoulder buttons were switched, still came second though.

Lack of customisable control layouts is phail.

That being said, it doesn't take me all that long to get used to controls, except when there is some fun idea like "hold right-mouse button at all times to (insert anything here)" or "right joystick lets you look around". I do get used to that kind of stuff too, it's just annoying.

Oh, and games that map anything but movement to one of the WASD keys are just begging an uninstall. Clicking to move blows hard enough without windows opening when I forget WASD aren't used for movement; at least let them do nothing.

I don't usually have problems remembering. I still have problems with a lot of control setups. I don't like having ctrl as crouch in most FPS. I prefer "c". So I change it. I think most games have customisable controls, so you can't really complain.

Playing the PC beta of BC2 multiplayer, there is no prone button so crouch is bound to ctrl. Go into MW2 and all of a sudden I'm lying down instead of crouching. Took me about 20 minutes to get back into the swing of things!

I have those problems all the time. But it normally doesn't effect me too much.

Call of Duty 4 vs Halo 3.

Halo 1 and 2 has the same controls, then they go switching up the reload button on Halo 3 to the bumpers, and the X button as the "equipment" button. So if I played CoD4 for an extended period and then switched over to Halo 3, I was throwing equipment out. Conversely, after a few weeks of Halo 3, I would be tossing frags right at my feet by accident in CoD4.

Switching from Halo 1 to 2 on PC.
All of a sudden "switch weapons" is now "throw grenade"?
Who made that decision?

Exactly, yeah. I'd much rather have the option to customise than several presets that I'm never going to use. I mean who plays Legacy these days, really?

Installed Mass Effect on my computer recently, and the grenade button is R. Almost killed myself on five different occasions because other games have taught me to reload after a bunch of kills.

Going from Fallout 3 where B brings up my Pip-boy, to Fable II, where B incinerates everyone around me in a screaming angry heap.

And then from crouching in MW2, to throwing grenades in Rainbow Six: Vegas presented a few funny mishaps. Also the fact that the left trigger doesn't bring up the sights in RS:V, so you get a shot lined up perfectly, go to zoom in for more accuracy, and *SCHLORP*, you're sucked halfway across the room into cover.

It happens to me every time when i switch games. And it's always grenades.
I played Fallout 3 where RB activates VATS mode, and after that Borderlands where RB throws a nade. I wasted all my grenades trying to scan for enemies.
In Left 4 Dead B is used for reloading, in Rainbow Six Vegas it's for throwing grenades. I killed myself and my squad when i tried to reload.

Oh God, this. Except with less MW2 and more Bad Company/BC2 Demo. Speaking of which, they completely changed that layout for BC2, so that what was once switch weapon is now knife, and the other switch weapon is grenade. Luckily for my teammates team damage is turned off.

It's only if I play two similar games with different control schemes. That's when the mix ups and accidental grenades happen.
Oh dear heavens, this so so so much.

After playing MW2 a lot I went back to Resistance 2 to finish the campaign. I must've naded myself a dozen times before I got the hang of it again.

(Talking about keyboard mappings on PC) A sure way to keep mixing with the keys is switching between playing FIFA 10, NHL 09 and NHL 2004. I can tell you that every once in a while you'll try to pass or do something else when you have a great scoring chance, if you just shoot, in a sports game that is not one of those that you have been playing the most.

Through the Counter-Strike saga, from 1.3 to the current source, my secondary attack (scope) and jump have been switching places between mouse1, space and mouse3/4. Now I've grown used to them again for good amount of months, but before I used to mix them with each others for a good while after I had changed them.

Years of gaming have left me with an instinct for getting used to control schemes quickly, unless I have played the same game with a different control scheme before.
