Hi everyone. I'm looking for a game on Steam or something that's like the old Advance Wars games from the GBA.

As far as strategy games go, it's my all time fav by far and I'd like to play a new game that's basically it rather than just emulate it.

There is a game on the iOS store for £1.50 called The Commander of Steel, but I'd rather get something on Steam or Vita or something (there's nothing on Vita, so it's all about Steam).

Any suggestions throw them forward!

Thanks.

There are tons of turn-based tactical games on the PC, but few exactly like Advance Wars. Still here's a few suggestions of great PC games in that sort of genre.

King's Bounty might be worth looking into. It's got a similarly cheesy vibe to it, although fantasy this time, and the gameplay is just as sharp. Instead of single units to a hex it uses stacks, plus there's spells and special abilities, but the core tactical gameplay is there.

But if you want something more hardcore, perhaps the new XCOM game might be worth looking into. It's a lot more serious than either Advance Wars or King's Bounty, but if you want a challenging but rewarding tactical experience this is a great place to start.

No idea how similar they are ... I watched a minute or two of each but what about "War of the Human Tanks". It's about as kawaii/military as you can get and it does seem to be a little luck based.

Here is a video ...

Like I said, it might not be similar in any way but it's turn based, on steam and has humans/tanks fighting

Panzer General/Panzer Corps are the closest to Advance Wars I can think of in gameplay sense, although they don't have the bright colours/cartoon influence. Both are realistic WW2 games, use hex grids and I know that Panzer Corps is definitely on Steam.

Yeah it's the gameplay style I'm looking for.

For me, everything about it just works. The units, the capturing cities for money, the bases... yeah it's the play style I want.
I have XCOM but it's not grid based right?

I'll look at what was suggested (though not so sure about the Human Tanks one). Cheers for the suggestions so far.

I can also heartily endorse X-COM Enemy Unknown and the expansion Enemy Within - it adds so much more to the base game. Never play without it!

I love strategy games, both real and turn based, and I've had more fun with X-COM than a lot of other games over the last several years. And once you've done it all and think you're ready, look for the Long War mod if you're ready for some serious shit.

Space Empires V might suit you as well, however, you'll want individual core speed on your CPU to be high because the game seems to have no multithreading capability, and unless you keep the galaxy size down a bit as well as the number of players, the turn time processing can get truly absurdly long. The game is great, especially with some good mods that enhance the core gameplay, but it's completely cut off at the knees not being able to utilize multi core CPUs. The game is just too complex for it's hardware utilization capabilities. I'm hoping the next Space Empires game won't have this glaring design flaw. But if you can deal with the restrictions, it's a good game.

You might look into the coming Civilization: Beyond Earth. Which seems to be inspired by Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, which I believe is one of the best turn based strategy games of all time.

If you can find a way to play it, Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions is something to look in to.

The Langrisser series is a hybrid of Shining Force & Advanced Wars, only the first game in the series was localised as Warsong on the Megadrive. Langrisser 2 (MD), Der Langrisser (SNES), Langrisser 4 (PS1) have fan translation patches.

Because of the lack of western localisation the series is an unknown quantity among many gamers so you'll have to emulate.

Cool thanks for the info. Unfortunately I can't read the info on the link (white on black does unspeakable things to my eyes, seriously) but I'll look into it a bit.

You could just check out this freeware (or maybe opensource sounds better) game called Wesnoth.

http://www.wesnoth.org/

It's a fantasy setting and the grid is hex-based as opposed to squares but gameplay-wise it's very similar to Advance Wars. You can spawn units from bases and capture various keypoints around the map to generate income, units will gain advantages or disadvantages depending on what terrain they're on, and they'll level up with each fight they survive.

I've been wishing they'd make a new advance wars for the 3ds for so long.

Thanks Op for starting this and thanks for the heads up on some other strategy games other posters.

My suggestion would be valkyria chronicles.
Ps3 title.
Two sequels on the PsP.

Really good fun squad sized turn based strategy game.

Check out some videos of it if you get a chance.

Tricky to find something like that, and I have tried as well. Dual Strike was my favorite by far.

Been looking at the responses above me, and they've already nailed down the two that I'd recommend. Check out XCOM: Enemy Unknown/Enemy Within for head-scratching turn-based strategy, but look into Valkyria Chronicles if you want something a little more lighthearted in comparison.

There was Battle Worlds: Kronos, but...I'd avoid it.
It's way too limited in its content for what they're asking for.
(a free play, map editor with production-play like regular AW would have been great)

Holy Santa Clause shit, this looks pretty good thanks a lot!

You know what I could play for days? A new Advanced Wars that was just like 1-2 in art style with some select War Room levels like Spann Island, Ridge Island, Duo Falls and Twin Isle (maps that are more ground troop focus and some with minimal airport support, just keeping it simple. Oh, and fairly symmetrical) with a good selection of balanced CO's and a map editor. Not even that bothered about the notoriously killer campaign or anything, just really love some of the War Room levels and love the idea of playing them against people.

Cool cheers, you know I've had XCOM for ages and I still haven't played it yet. I need to.

I wasn't that into Dual Strike personally, that's when I started to fall away from the series. There was (imo) an excess of different units and I didn't feel they needed to add any, also I didn't like what they were doing with trying to play 2 battles at once on the different screens. I thought Advance Wars 2 was pretty much as far as it needed to get, I could have even played without the Neo Tanks, and I'm a believer in "if it's not broke don't fix it" lol.
