It has been my observation that (good) animated shows tend to improve with time, while live action shows tend to get progressively worse. The only real exception I can think of would be the Simpsons, but they've been on so long I don't really think that trend applies to them.

When Adventure Time started, it's was obvious Cartoon Network wanted an "on crack" cartoon to match the viral success of Spongebob Squarepants. They hired writers and producers FROM Spongebob for this purpose.
Well that's all I needed to know. I thought that show was fucking neurotic when I was 8. Don't want anything to do with this one know. I'll stick to old episodes of Firefly or something.

I actually like that adventure time has evolved. The randomness makes it appeal to children but also makes it a unique show and helps to really incorporate the backstory/background themes.

Yeahhhh the ENTIRE point of the post was to expound on how and in what ways the show has matured past its crack cartoon origins into something with continuity and subtle, and not so subtle, mature themes.

Huh, I suppose it does. It's a bit jarring when you think about the darker undertones of this cartoon, though...
