I remeber when I was afraid of movies like them now I find them gruesomly hilarious, and usually burst into laughter upon someone being sliced open for their skull to be removed, or freaked out by some creepy thing behind them they saw in a mirror.

problem is, if it doesnt have a plot I can get into the gore and horror bore me instead.

The worst case of parenting i have ever seen is in a kfc where johnny fatasf*ck and his mother come in and mother says "what do you want then son?" in a supressed voice like that of an unhappy or scared dog.
Johhny replies "Family bucket, aaaand boneless box, yea! and kiddie meal! they have cool toys" mother replies"
but johnny you promised you would eat less, you promised" and this is the worst thing ever johnny replies
"DAMMIT F*CKING B*TCH IMA HUNGRE WAAAAAAA!" and proceeded to punch his mother in the crotch and stomach, that was just really strange because she just took it and went on with buying him some kfc.

Other instances is trying to get mugged by a five year old on a pushbike trying to mug me(him with no weapon)and a teenage mother bringing her daughter into school.

That is... disturbing and funny at the same time.

P.S. the quote button dosn't work for some reason, so I'm just gonna quote like this.

There is nothing wrong with physically punishing your child. It tends to work, which is more than you can say for other means of discipline. But actually punching or using violence beyond a rebukeful slap is nothing more than sociopathic cruelty at it's greatest. I should know- and you can't excuse drink, for my parents, while they do occasionallp clip me, do not ever use violence when they drink (Excepting self-defence) for they know how easy it is to be violent. And now I've wandered so far off my original point I'm going to need a map to find it again.
I've never in my entire life seen any parent being calm and in control while clinically slapping or physically punishing their kid. When parents hit their kid it's because they are frustrated, confused, and angry not knowing what to do next.

That my friend, is bad parenting. It is common, and I don't think people should go to jail for being average idiots but lets not shit ourselves into thinking it is the intelligent high road.
Actually, my grandma would send us away so she could calm down before she punished us, to avoid just striking us out of anger. So, I guess you just saw someone who was punished calmly with a slap or a spanking. And I don't seem all the worse for it.

You let your 2-year-old child watch Alien movies? What the fuck, man? What the fuck?
Does their face melt off when they watch them? I don't get why people are in an uproar over that.
Oh, I don't know, maybe I'm worried about the kid later having nightmares? Age limits exist for a reason. Especially for horror movies.

There was recently a study here in Finland about 5-6 year old kids and how much they feared shows on TV. This was the most scariest for them (and for me when I was a kid): http://www.hs.fi/kuvat/iso_webkuva/1135238281895.jpeg (It's scarier in the show.)

They also found Pokemon, Digimon and Scoopy Doo as scary.

Sitting in a coffee shop for lunch, I notice two well-dressed socialites chattering over coffee. I don't notice the adorable red-headed girl, or rather, I don't immediately identify it as being one of theirs, as she is clearly bored out of her cute little skull and wandering around behind the counter. Every now and then she darts out and tries to get her mother's attention, but is brushed off in favor of more gossip. Some time passes, and the mother gets up to order another latte or something and notices her daughter behind the counter helping the workers. She throws a fit, grabs her daughter and yells at her for talking with the lowly retail workers, using the words, and I remember clearly with the focus of red rage, "you just don't talk to those people". She takes the manager off for a few words, returns with coffee, and goes back to neglecting her daughter. Before finishing my lunch, I pass the poor girl a pencil and a few papers out of my sketchbook; all in all I have spent an hour there, and I'd be hard-pressed to say the mother spent a dozen words in total on her child. The girl was just so cute and curious and well-behaved I almost felt like stealing her. Even working at minimum wage, she'd be better off raised by me.

So I'm sitting on my couch with my 2 year old son watching the Toxic Avenger, when I glance over and see him looking at Melvin/Toxie, completely still, frozen in some kind of abject horror. It's at that point that I realize, even though he loved watching (no I mean it, he claps and actually cheers) the AvP movies, Aliens, Predator, and Cloverfield, and has been fine with all the other horror and slasher flicks (again, usually laughing and clapping at them) I've shared with him, he can still get freaked out by something that wasn't supposed to be scary.
Ok, first of all you're breaking the law. Whether you believe in it or not.

Secondly, as soon as that kid actually works out exactly what he's seeing (To him it's meaningless at the moment), he's going to have screaming fits.

Now it's obviously your call, but I'd explain exactly why those films are not real before he figures it out himself.

@Ballptpenthief : Most kids under 4 can watch Slashers etc. because they can't draw a direct comparison between fantasy and reality. Once they do, heading for 5-7, they're gonna have a mindfuck like you wouldn't believe.

If there is a law or statute... ANYWHERE, that says you can't watch R rated movies with your child at your leisure, I would like to see that linked.

My father had a tendency to leave me alone with Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, Heretic, Carmageddon, etc. I suppose I should just be grateful that video games weren't as they are now, or I could have been REALLY messed up.

I personally think this thread is more of a flame-war than a comparison of honest, subjective opinions. It's not as bad as some I've seen, but some people should learn to agree to disagree, so to speak.

Eh, I was hoping more for people sharing somewhat humorous stories and what not, not so much the flaming. Ah well. Thread fail I suppose.

As far as letting my son watch Aliens, seriously, he's been playing with all the old Aliens and Predator toys that I kept from when I was young since he was old enough to play with them. No small parts with them, no choking hazard, he only played with them with me in front of him. He actually likes monster flicks. He's a normal little boy, loves pretending to be a monster and all that. He's actually got a nice little zombie impression that he breaks out whenever he sees a zombie on tv, it's cute when he does it. That being said, I let him watch these movies because I want to share them with him, my dad did this with me, and I like to share that same experience with him. Now then, the title of the thread was 'Adventures in Bad Parenting' and I was mostly hoping for stories about how people may have accidently finding themselves leaving their kids warped in some way, mine was not thinking more about Toxic Avenger, and assuming that he'd be fine with it since he enjoyed the other movies so much. Again, never said it was good parenting there in the original post, thus the title.

Now, if anybody else feels the need to throw insults about, then please, by all means, direct them at me and not at eachother, and let's hear some good stories. Or, just kill the thread. Either way. Just would much rather not have my first created topic on Escapist be a flame-war.

Meh, letting your kids watch violent films, or play violent video games isn't a problem as long as you're going to teach them enough that they know it's not actually ok to go out and kill hookers (or for that matter anyone else).

If watching scary movies as a kid leads to them growing up "messed up".

But I grew up "messed up", and didn't watch scary movies.

Then I think the argument is invalid!!!

That or my reasoning is completely wrong in every sense...
(Which it is, so shut up and don't act like I'm NOT being sarcastic and using double negatives...)

Also, on a side note. I think everyone should include the following "(sarcastic)" under every phrase the type online. Just for the sake of me, and a few others can tell when they are indeed being sarcastic and not just "retards".
