Before I begin, I'd like to make it clear that this isn't an "Adverts are bad and need to go" type thread

I've been thinking lately (mostly due to youtube choosing to play the same advert over and over again) about adverts, and what good they do.
I personally have never purchased anything as a result of advertising, including those cheeky fast food adverts that come on from 6-9 ish, in fact most adverts actually put me off a product, but this is just me.

So my question is; Have you ever purchased something as a direct result of an advert, like seeing an advert for shampoo and thinking "hmm, I'm running low on shampoo actually, I might try that out"

Yes, but not from ads online. [small]For...ahem...various reasons[/small]

There have been a few food items I decided to try after seeing a commercial on tv. Other things, I donno. I usually research and decide.

Actually, I guess if you count sale ads--like say, Fry's Electronics advertising a terabyte hard drive for $50--then yeah, I do buy stuff occasionally after seeing the ad.

Was tempted to buy some salmon after watching this ad on TV many moons ago.

But nah, don't tend to be influenced by advertising as I tend to only buy stuff I need, brands don't particularly bother me either (except anti-perspirant, you don't want to know how important that is when they expect the student ODP to scrub and stand under those fucking surgical lights for 4 hours helping).

Now that I think about it, no.

There is one exception, though. OLD SPICE DEODORANT!

Almost all ads outside of the internet negatively impact my view of a product or company. Not because I hate people selling things to me. I mean, everyone needs to buy stuff once and a while, but usually the ads themselves are just terrible.

On the web though I just ignore them because usually it's shit they're trying to sell.

Have I bought things after seeing ads though? Definitely. Such as food that looked good, or started watching a TV show that looked interesting. As long as it isn't an insultingly bad ad, and I'm interested in the product I'll look into it. This is rare of course...

Well it apparently works, sales-wise.

When I outright state that I hated an advert because it sucked, and will actually make sure I don't buy the product because of how bad the advert was, I get told that the advert has succeeded, because I remember it.

No, it has not succeeded, because I will remember not to buy the product. At least mediocre, forgettable adverts mean, in how hard they are to remember, that I won't mind buying the product, but generally yeah, I buy due to prior knowledge (through announcements or acclimatisation), not usually because of an advert I saw.

They're good for letting me know of any games or films coming out, but I would usually find out sooner or later anyway. However, although sometimes they can be well made, I can't remember the last time I bought something because of seeing an ad for it.

Ads aren't supposed to make you consciously go out and buy the product.

They're there to make you aware of the product so that the next time you're in the store, faced with 30 brands of women's razors, you'll buy the one you've grown familiar with through ads.
They make sure that, when you come across their product in the store shelves, it is not the first time you see it. Because if you've never heard of a given brand of detergent before, you're not very likely to pick that brand up on your grocery round. Unless said brand is cheaper than all the competition, that is.
They're not making you like a product. They're making you aware of it.

This is not a conscious process, so I wouldn't be able to answer your question.

Also: I think it's quite arrogant and naive to think that you're not influenced by ads at all *cough*restofthethread*cough*.
"Sure, ads might work in getting people in general to buy a product; but I'm not 'people in general': I'm special. I'm not as easily influenced as the rest of the world. Normal people are weak-willed. I'm not."

Well. I guess it isn't really proven that ads increase sales substantially, I'll give you that.

No. I have a policy not to be affected my adverts.

Also what so annoying is its the same dam ones all the time. Like on freeview channels every break its 'watch this thing, Monday at 9' AAAAAAARGGG SHUT UP don't you have anything on on other days at other times.

Yeah, youtube has seen fit to give me the techron advert constantly for the past week, I don't own a car so this is absolutely useless to me.

Also I'd like to point out that I know adverts are there to raise awareness of a product, I'm just interested to see how many people see an advert and make a point to go get whatever the product was.

I rarely understand whats been advertised let alone begin to want to buy them...
But online adverts on youtube or the escapist where it stops you watching your video for however long are just downright annoying.

I don't think I have, at lest not recently. I do, however, buy products that sponsor or support events that I care about. For example, I buy Pepsi products because they sponsor the GSL, and I freakin' love that show.

Closest thing is that I saw an advert for Assassin's Creed 2 on Film4 in 2009. Yes, I immediately pre-ordered it.
Although I more-or-less ignore them, they are a good way to make back some money for sites.
