Hey everybody, both I and username sucks are using this summer as an opportunity to expand our nerdiness (I think that is a word someone used once) to even greater heights. What better way than to explore the magic land of Netflix? Where we have so many great series that reside.

So, what do you guys want to refer us to? We really want something we can be really invested in to want to see all the episodes of, or possibly allow it to be short so we can see it all in 1 week. We just need you to share your fandom and give us a recommendation.

There are no clearly defined rules, but here's some recommendations (for your recommendations)

1)I was thinking probably something animated, whether new or old, western or Japanese, would do well since I think we both enjoy the medium well enough and it can be very wide in what it covers. But non-animated series like Breaking Bad may work too if it is investing enough for you.

2)We both simply enjoy good characters over a driving and cohesive plot, it's somewhat why I think Bioshock 2 is underrated in the series, but hey I know I've got unpopular opinions. The characters don't even really need to be relate-able, just good and likable, unless they are villains, we also really like over the top jerkish villains. A good to great plot would be appreciated, just not the biggest priority to us.

3) User doesn't like Dragon Balls, his main gripe being the "increase your power level to defeat this guy" thing and how long the show would go on for. If you recommend anime, try not recommending something like this.

4) An interesting setting would be nice, I'm not saying realism isn't an option, but user and I are gamers and therefore like to suspend disbelief a bit, although he also doesn't like it when media talks about a scientific subject and doesn't get it right at all, dna holding memories being an example.

5) The show being big and popular with a good and loyal fanbase is almost completely necessary to what we want to do. So yeah, try not to go so obscure.

Yeah, so that's about it. For some recommendations on shows neither of us have really watched that we know are popular is MLP, several of the Netflix exclusive content shows, and Breaking Bad, but feel free to post anything, at anytiime from here to maybe August. Who says we can't become fans of more than 1 show if we get through it fast enough?

Thank You,
Atlas' Heart

I still don't like how you're just dragging me into watching something, Atlas. I have never enjoyed watching TV for long, and with this binge session you're planning...

Can someone please just recommend something really short? TV series have never been my thing, but this guy is convinced that he can get me to like something.

Well, if you're into camp then there's Power Rangers. Last I checked the whole series was on Netflix.

If camp isn't your taste, well, there's the anime section which is sizable and pretty decent.

Well you've got a couple of the "obvious" ones like Firefly, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, and Attack on Titan but I presume you've either watched them or you've already been recommended them and have passed them up for whatever reason.

A few I like...

Soul Eater: An anime. However, the series is kind of long (5 seasons) but I freaking loved the characters in the show. Very Trigun-like where it's a serious show with some sweet fights but a lot of built-in humor. However, the first three episodes are a little bit of a chore as the three introduce the three separate groups.

High-school of the Dead: An anime. Are you alright with stupid amounts of fan service (like....STUPID amounts of it?). If so, this is an interesting series with a group of high school kids fighting zombies. As warned though, way too much fan service crap so if that bugs you, stay away. Currently has only one season made (though more are to follow from what I've seen).

Jericho: A regular TV Show. I've raved about this show before [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.850340-Shows-that-NEED-to-be-brought-back#21008309] and I will continue to do so. A very cool concept (the world nukes the shit out of itself and only small towns like Jericho survive) that ended prematurely. So on the plus side, it's pretty short (1 1/2 seasons) but on the negative side, it kind of leaves a lot of threads loose.

House of cards. Watch it. It's awsome. I started watching it a few months ago, and couldn't stop. It was just so engaging. I do wonder if the real world works that way.

Madoka Magica's on netflix if you haven't seen it yet. It's one of my favorites.

If you haven't seen it already, it's a magical girl show in the same vein as Sailor Moon, but don't let that and the cutesy art fool you. It's a pretty bleak show that's a much darker take on that sub-genre, without it dissolving into mindless violence or shock value. You may not get that from the first few episodes, but just stick with it. It's only 12 episodes, so it's not too long. It's also very popular, especially in Japan, and has a large fanbase, so it might fit in to what you're looking for, but who knows, you guys might hate it for all I know.

Breaking bad is by far the best series ive ever watched. Its not perfect and there are a few slow bits but overall its enough to keep you wanting the next episode (immediately)

Ive been watching pokemon series 1 for a bit of a nostalgia trip and im enjoying it a lot

Here:
-Breaking Bad(because you know why)
-House of Cards(Kevin Spacey is really, really good in this, and its the politics from GoT cranked up to 11)
-The Walking Dead(the most popular zomble show isn't too bad)
-Community(because you will either love it or hate it, but it is utterly unique and amazing if you like it, though I am not 100% sure that its available in the US on Netflix)
-Vikings(if you like that the stuff shown actually, 100% happened irl)

That's about all really. HBO has the good stuff on lockdown, like Game of Thrones(I think, but I see them on the page, either way, check it out if possible) or True Detective(saw it on Sky, but I know that HBO is pretty expensive in the states, I just hope that they get over their rivalry with Netflix and just release their damn series for all to enjoy).

I also heard that Battlestar Galactica is pretty good, though I haven't seen it.

People have already taken some of my top picks but I would strongly recommend Arrested Development. It's quite funny and has a lot of great running gags. Gob is one of the funniest characters I've ever seen between his illusions and his ridiculous way of mocking people for being a chicken.

If you are in the UK id suggest go on BBC iplayer and watch 'Jonah from Tonga' its about a Tongan boy living in australia who misbehaves and gets expelled from school. He moves to a strict catholic school and hilarity ensues.

Theres only like 4 episodes so far but its piss funny

>Watch FullMetal Alchemist (2003 version)
>"Hate" that version's ending
>Watch FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhood starting from Epsiode 12, I think...
>Watch til the very end
Thank me later?

OT:
Angel Beats
Darker Than Black (Season 1)
Eden of the East
Samurai Champloo
Gunslinger Girl
Afro Samurai
Initial D
Avatar: The Last Airbender

Then again, it's been a "while" since I've been on Netflix, so there's that... (Also, I was ninja'd on the Arrested Development choice...)

Battlestar Galactica is actually really really good. It surprised me.

It has the mystery and addictiveness of early Lost (except it gets even better as it goes on, instead of worse), the post-apocalyptic atmosphere of The Walking Dead, the brilliantly subtle character drama of Breaking Bad and the sci-fi military action of Stargate.

Something for everyone!

I have to agree with the above post - I think Battlestar Galactica fits your criteria the best. The show zeroes in on the characters and never looks away, and there are plenty of good, noble ones trying to survive in a menacing sci fi universe. Big loyal fanbase? Check. It was enough of a pop culture event that people know what you're talking about when you say, "what the frack?".

I don't know anime that well, but Samurai Champloo is one of my favorite things ever made, and of course Fullmetal Alchemist is hard not to like. Though if you decide to go with FMA, as I see others have said, you may have to choose between Brotherhood or the original. As for other anime, Netflix's selection doesn't seem to be that extensive. You might search around Hulu and other sites if you want more to choose from.

And a footnote that may not apply: To whoever mentioned Vikings earlier, I do hear it's a great show, but unfortunately it's only on Amazon Prime in the US. But if the OP does happen to have Prime, as a left-field suggestion, see Deadwood. Seth Bullock and Swearengen are the best good/bad guy pair I've ever seen, though not in the typical way. It's the kind of show you'll either be annoyed with or you'll fall head over heels in love with it.

Another anime recommendation that hasn't been mentioned yet is Fate/Zero. It's easily one of the best animes on Netfilx and one of my favourite shows to have come out in the past 4 years.

I also recommend Penny Dreadful. It's not on Netflix, but the first two episodes you can watch for free online on Showtime's website. It's a character heavy, Victorian-era supernatural thriller focusing on famous horror novel characters (e.g. Dorian Grey, Victor Frankenstein etc.) coming together to thwart an ancient vampire prophecy (or at least that's what I understood to be from the first couple of episodes). It's basically League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, but not shit.

It also has Eva Green and Timothy Dalton. They're great. As is the guy who plays Frankenstein.

I was actually planning on watching the whole original MMPR last year, but I think I only got to episode 40, I did enjoy the series as a kid, and enjoy it now, but the problem is that the characters really aren't the focus of Power Rangers and the plot from episode to episode stays very similar. Also, I don't think user will like it too much, although I do think he likes ham and cheese of it all

Actually watched none of those, what I usually gravitate toward on Netflix is things related to other media, like comic book shows and shows based on games like Sonic SATAM, while sometimes watching an anime or recent animated movie. ould you please inform me tippy, what makes these shows so good and popular?
