Some of you (about twenty) may remember my previous post where I asked advice of my fellow Escapists as to how to write a short story. I've decided to post a second thread with this topic, in light of the fact that the flash drive I stored it on recently got broken and I had to start over. Now that that's out of the way...

I'm currently writing a novella (yeah, let's go with that). It is an original work telling the story of a zombie apocalypse. In case you're interested, the four main characters are: A drug-addicted painter from England, a Japanese woman who is a long-time friend of the aformentioned painter, a pirate hailing from the Scottish highlands, and a parody of the Heavy from Team Fortress 2.

The issue is, I don't know how to write an action scene. And that is where you come in.

Perhaps you should go and read some action scenes in books and learn from those.

The most important tip I can give is do your research. Nothing shatters the excitement of an action scene like realizing the author doesn't actually know how the things he's describing work in the real world. Other than that, you have to find your own style by consuming action. Listen to eggy and find as much written action as you can and read it repeatedly. Pay attention to what does or doesn't work for you and build on that.

Read the Drizzt series and the Night Angel Trilogy. Those have some pretty good action scenes. As far as shooter scenes, I can't help you all that much. Just go really over the top with the description.

The best advice I can give is to read and examine a lot of books before you set anything in stone.

Erm... I could give an example and try writing a paragraph with your characters but it would be rude and I would feel embarassed if it sucked. I'm writing my own story, except it's not short it's fucking huge... maybe too huge. But this isn't a place to plug myself [small]so I'll just[/small] [sub]shut up now.[/sub]
