I had recently bought the game on a steam sale, and holy hell was the final stage intense. I had never managed to get past that damn second stage of the boss when he drones you to death, but thanks to timely cloaking and missile spam I finally managed to knock it down with 2 hull left. After that part 3 was a pushover, but I was ecstatic at the end.

Whats that? Normal difficulty??? *Runs away in terror*

Anyway, what about you guys? What are your most harrowing, exciting, hilariously tragic, ect., moments in FTL?

Only 13 goes?

Cheers man. I've clocked in over 20 hours and I still haven't beaten the damn game. I came close once though, I was able to take out the flagship's second form, but after that I was holding my ship together with duct tape and prayers and I couldn't get to a repair station because the flagship was right on top of the federation base. I didn't last long in the final fight.

Kudos to you sir, I gave up on trying to beat that damn thing a long time ago and just got a mod that gets rid of it entirely. Now i'm free to roam space as I please and slowly get torn to pieces by the smaller ships.

I think my most intense moment was when some enemies boarded my ship and in a moment of panic I opened every door on the ship, including the air locks. Needless to say most of crew suffocated except for my pilot. Thanks to a few lucky encounters with some weak slaver ships I was able to rebuild my crew a bit, though I ended up getting killed by that damn boss in the end.

Congrats! I still remember my first victory against it XD I found the best way to handle to it was to set fire to their missile room, as their missiles were the only things that could break through my shields, and had no way for them to reach it for repairs once the operator died.

Haven't really been able to beat it since then though :/

Yeah, the only blessing the boss gives you is the weapons are separate to the main part of the ship, other than that it is one of the toughest bosses I have faced in a game.

definitely a son of a ***** that you can't just attack head on, so congrats for beating it, it definitely took me more than 13 tries, i'm pretty sure i had 15-20 hours in before i beat it, and even then it was only my 4th time getting to the boss :/

I've never won, but I've also never played on easy. What's a rougelike without crushing defeat, I always say :p

I had a couple of impressive runs this past week, though. Picked up the game for the first time in months, and my very first run wound up being my second highest score of all time. The other thing was where I got my first

Crystal crewmember
, although I died in the very next sector. Funnily enough, that was a pathetically low scoring game for one with that kind of luck -- mid 900's, as opposed to the high 1000's like my top scores.

Only 13, daaaamn. That final boss can wreck you if you screw up once or he beats you to a repair. Very fun game but really easy to lose your super ship to a bit of ill fortune.

Congratulations you derserve it.

Two sort of tragic moments come to mind, once I got to the final area with a respectable ship, which probably could have taken the Rebel Flagship...if it had the chance. I came across a Rock ship that had bombs in (I think) every orifice and ripped me apart. -_-

Another one was a boarding run, I had a handful of Mantus and Rock crew that were excellent at hand to hand combat, hadn't lost a fight or a crew member yet. Got to the Rebel Flagship, and through some terrible management by myself, got stuck in a loop where I couldn't kill the bastards before they healed up in their giant medbay, and ran out of bombs with which to disable it. Terrible waste of a good crew.

Got it next time though. Boarding run, mostly rocks, and fire and anti-bio weapons. Yeah.

Only 13? That's pretty damn good.

I've managed to get up to the boss's third (final?) form on normal mode, but I've never beaten it.

Same here, by that point in the battle my crew and the ship has been stretched thin. Just unlocked the Zoltan cruiser, so I am starting again with that and will see how I go.

I've beat the game on easy a few times though, it's good practice at the very least.

On 13th time.... now you're just bragging!
Congrats, it took me maybe twice so long till I beat that third form. That drone phase is the real pushover there.

Congratulations. I understand that by "Whats that? Normal difficulty??? *Runs away in terror*", you mean that you played on the easy difficulty. I never tried easy, so it took months before I managed to beat it.

What ship did you use? When I beat it I used the Kestrel, after realizing that all the other ships I unlocked were designed to work well in some situations, but not in others, while the Kestrel was the jack-of-all-trades ship.

Try to beat it on Normal and get some achievements if you feel up to it.

Not to boast... But I finished it on my first attempt on normal. I'm not even a good gamer. It's probably because I named all the crewmembers as people from The Expendables. Chuck Norris holding off invaders ;D

I've beaten it a few times in normal. Very tense game, but fuck me is it annoying when the RNG doesn't go your way.
I mean, it's not a complete lottery, but if you don't get at least a little lucky on the early sectors... well you're pretty much fucked and ain't nothin' you can do to stop it.

you can try putting the crew in the healing room and then keeping the doors shut and opening the rest and the airlocks. this will force the enemy to come fight you but you and your crew will be healing while they do damage to you!

I don't think I've ever beaten the boss on normal difficulty but on easy setting it took me many more than 13 tries.

I remember one try in particular I thought I was being smart by opening any rooms without my crew in them to space by opening the airlocks since I kept getting boarded by just about every ship I was coming across. In the end it worked for a while but then an enemy knocked out my door controls and oxygen and things went to hell in a hurry; and that's not even mentioning the fires in just about every compartment that still had oxygen...aww memories.

Dude, I am calling MAJOR bullshit.

Unless you mean that you played the hell out of easy THEN switched to normal?

Because I when I first played FTL played on Normal, every... single... time. It's a goddamn good rougelike. I remember I actually made a few videos on it, and I was one of the first people to play the game (and record it) so I actually got a nice amount of views on them, then more popular youtubers started playing it. /foreveralone

But regardless, if you actually started the game up, played on normal and in one go beat the boss, I am calling bullshit. You must have at least read a strategy guide, seen videos or played easy first. I don't think there is a person on this earth who can sit down, download FTL and beat it on normal in the first go.

Well done hero. Now rest and try again.
Yeah games used to end like that once.
Well congratulations, now try beating StarDrive on Nightmare. (the easy mode is so easy any newbie can do that though)

20 hours sounds more like 1-2 games though. i mean, 20 hours is very small amount of time to spend on a game. well, maybe with those 3 hours for 60 bucks titles nowadays its not that small, but it used to be :(

Could have been very lucky? there were times when i did something and it felt easy. thne going though a second play it would tkae me 10 tries to beat the same location because i got very lucky in the first run (namely the last reactor invasion on Shadow Of Chernobyl, damn those snipers who shoot you as soon as you move past the corner.
And there are people who would pick a game, any game, trie a first few moments and then sit and actually analyze what they did and how it went, learning a lot at the very begining. and in games like FTL where the setup balance of "if i do that ill loose that" this means a lot. SUch people usually like this type of games to begin with so acostumed to the whole idea.
