Ah, I can think of a few problems that might completely destroy this move.

1. M.Night has NO idea how to shoot action scenes. Just watch the Last Airbender.

2. M.Night is terrible with child actors. They come off a bland, emotional-less, and act like adults in a child's body.

3. M.Night can not do dialog. It's too stilted, emotional-less, and expositionally. Every single piece of dialog in the Last Airbender was exposition.

4. Look at his adaption of the Last Airbender. It was rushed, really confusing, poorly explained, and clearly had no idea what it was doing.

I don't have much hope for this movie.

:p Personally I thought M. Night Shabamalamadingdong shouldn't have been allowed anywhere near the Director's Chair (or even Author's chair, for that matter) for pretty much everything he's done thus far.

The Village was crap.
Signs was crap (Seriously? Aliens whose faces melt off if they get splashed by water invade a planet covered 70% in the stuff? That means you could adequately protect your home by leaving the fucking lawn springlers on and waving a garden hose at the aliens.)
The Happening.

I didn't even see Air Bender (not a big fan of the series to begin with), but I'm sure he crapped all over that as well, and I've little doubt this movie will be crap as well.

As proof that Will Smith =/= greatness, he's going to be in an upcoming sequel to Independence Day.

Not to say that, for its time, the first Independence Day wasn't a good movie. But making a sequel to it?

>.> yeah...

Combining child actors, M Night Shyamalan, klichéd "I should have been there for you as a child but we can establish a relationship now" and 99% likelihood of environmental messages...what could possibly go wrong?

Seriously though, this movie is going to suck balls.

Calling it now: The Planet is Earth or Will Smiths kid will travel back in time and cause the disaster trying to save his dad.

Well according to that synopsis, we already know the planet is a now-ruined Earth. However with M. Night Slapdick at the helm, you're probably not too far off with the time-travel deal. :p

Now how about a Quentin Tarantino Samurai Gangster Western Space Opera? That one I would pay any price for a premiere ticket, even knowing it will be pretentious.
You basically described Firefly there, well serenity to be more accurate.
I thought I might get this.
Truth is I just want Quentin Tarantino to do one SciFi film. I reckon it could be very much interesting.

Nova Prime? They live on a giant robot?

I forgot to mention this in my original post, noticed what their names are.
Cypher Raige and Kitai Raige, is this movie taking cue from Hunger Games and other old scifi movies in terms of cheesy names like Katniss Everdeen or as MovieBob prefer to call her Catpiss Jellybean.
Kattniss is actually the name of a plant.

"If you can find yourself, Katniss, you can never go hungary."

~~~Mr. Everdeen.
That's a lot of puns.
Anyway it seems using weird sounding names is a requirement to any post apocalyptic or sci-fi setting.
I'm still wondering what his patented mandatory twist ending will be in this movie.
I havnt liked any of his movies since unbreakable and I hated him in Birdy the Mighty but the premise sounds a tiny bit interesting and I do think Will Smith and his son are good actors so I might see it.
Shyamalama hasn't given us anything good since Unbreakable as far as I'm concerned, and his complete rape of The Last Airbender means he no longer deserves to be a part of film-making at all. Also, Will Smith and kiddo are in it? Yuck.
After he destroyed--
Wait wait wait WAIT, now i think M. Night is a failure of a director whose career should have died after Signs, but lets get one thing clear: Avatar: The Last Airbender ALWAYS sucked, the movie would have failed even if you got Stanley Kubric to direct it.
Okay, that said, After Earth brings up nasty flashbacks of a bad sci-fi i watched while younger called Titan A.E and i won't be watching it.
Turns out the Earth depicted in the movie is Earth in the year 2015. :p
The public goodwill of Will/Jaden vs. the public fury towards M. Night Shyamalan.
This'll be good.
Personally, I never really disliked M. Night Shamalayalan, his movies were all entertaining enough even if they're completely dumb. I also respect M. Night Shyamalamalamaladingdang for at least trying to do risky things ("Lady in the Water" was apparently a bedtime story he told his kids). Plus, M. Night Shamylamnaynmanyanlamanalayan does have his finger in a few good films from years past (Stuart Little, anyone?), so I'll be cautiously optimistic. "After Earth" could be pretty good.
I will say that M. Night Shyshamalshamlanshalyamalynashamyalaymalshanymymalayan's name is pretty dang frustrating to type, though.
OT: I'm calling that the crash sent them back in time and the son grows up to be his own father.
+1 for that description of Serenity. That is bang on.
On one hand, I fucking hate M Night Shyamalan, especially in Birdy the Mighty.
On the other hand, I love just about every movie Will Smith has ever been in.
At least this movie has his son being the star rather than him, so that makes me lean more towards "this will be shit like anything Shyamalan does"
Wait. M Night Shyamalan was involved in Birdy the mighty? As in the anime? Am I missing something here?
It actually sounds like a decent movie (I just have a soft spot for anything sci-fi related). However, Shamalamadingdong's attachment to the film makes me realize that unless I see some super impressive trailers or hear some really good reviews, this movie is going to be a rent at best.
Apparently some film executives don't believe that and they go ahead for him to make After Earth (by this time its already finished filming) starring Will Smith and his son Jaden in a post-apocalyptic sci-fi film and it's written by the Book Of Eli's Gary Whitta.
In After Earth, one thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity?s escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind?s new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (played by Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (played by Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai?s craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.
The movie will be come out next June.
Is this the movie that redeems MNS? and might become a hit because the Smiths are attached to it or it will end up as another flop because the name M. Night Shyamalan is involved.
Your thoughts on this.
My only question is will they force Shyamalan to not put any plot-twists in this movie? Cause thats where most of his movies fail (okay, alot of his movies fail all over the place, but the plot twists are still a biggy.)
M. Night burned up his last chances with me on The Last Airbender. Look, the dude already had a PHENOMENAL story, all he had to do was shoot the durn thing, and he completely blew it. I have been trying to give him chances since Signs, but when he screwed up my beloved Avatar series... yeah, stick a fork in him.
Not at all actually, but the main antagonist in the first season is named Shyamalan, and bears a striking resemblance to IRL Shyamalan.
I always joke around that he wanted to make the best movie where a planet killing bio-weapon turns on it's creator and THEN kills the planet. The twist being that it turns on it's creator, like that never happens in anything ever....
