MMO would be fun. i'd definitely play it, and it'd be my first as well. they could do all sorts of options. merc bands of course, justice-doing spacemen, bloodthirsty murderers, the list goes on and on.

Considering how the trailer to Mass Effect 3 makes me assume this is going to be one hell of a 'finale' to Shephard's career, I don't think we'd be able to go forward into time with the series.
The only way Mass Effect is going to get any other games spat out of it would have to go back in time, ergo, prologues. An MMO is just wishful thinking, besides, that would be going into the Eve Online style of MMO's, except with a big juicy Seth Green to add comic relief to the whole plot.

Shepard's story should end with ME3, but I see no reason why ME games shouldn't continue. I for one have my fingers crossed for a Mass Effect: Battlefront type of game, where the 6 classes from the main games are all playable, and with space battles and such. Will it ever happen? Unlikely? If it did happen, would it become my new favorite game. Damn straight.
I'ld dig fighting in the Geth Uprising, on either side really. Or as a Drell fighting to get off their home world and dealing with life on the Hanar homeworld or something. It would be cool to pick which race you wanted to be but either it gets too watered down as far as the story is concerned (the Elder Scrolls IMO) or it is not significant enough (I love you Dragon Age, but don't tell me my race matters by pretty much only saying "hey your a dwarf!" no duh) so short of an MMO it wouldn't work.
I kinda like the idea of a Dragon Age: Origins-style Mass Effect game: Choose whatever species you want and where you start, and what your class is. Like, as stated above, a Quarian on Pilgrimage, or a Turain cop, or Krogan soldier. Or even a Geth platform like Legion.
However, unlike DA:O, your race would actually matter. For example, a Quarian would likely get scrutiny from most other races, and some shops would be refused them unless they passed a Paragon/Renegade check or something.

The Mass Effect universe has a TON of potential but I'd be perfectly happy if they left it alone after the third game. Wouldn't want to milk it too much you know...
