Ugh this thread has the potential to turn into a "My band is more underground than yours" so im just gonna say I like country and free jazz and leave it at that

Disturbed [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disturbed]! I know quite a few people on the forums have heard of them, but most people I know actually don't.
Oh my, I have an fiery irrational hate for that band, don't ask me why.
As for good bands:
Opeth.

My parents raised me on Talking Heads, one of the greatest bands ever. They broke up about 17 years ago, but I want the whole world to know about them.

Incidentally, I also recommend the hilarious art-house comedy film True Stories, directed by Talking Heads leader David Byrne. Anyone who hasn't seen that should see it. Without further delay.

Lordi,Ensiferum,WASP

They are some of my favorite bands but very few people I know listen to them.
W.A.S.P. are excellent, Lordi are meh and Ensiferum are downright awful.

Virgin Steele are probably my favourite band, right now. Along with Carnivore and Heathen.

wat?

Anyway, I'm really into Josef K at the moment. They were a post punk band from the late 70s/early 80s that recorded a heap of awesome material then broke up. Most of the so called "indie" bands that you hear about today such as Bloc Party and Franz Ferdinand are just ripping off Josef K (and other similar bands from that era) and selling lots of records because of it.

Edit: Just thought I'd add list of a few other bands you may not have heard of but really should:

Huggy Bear
Rocket From the Tombs
Dead Boys
Pere Ubu
Richard Hell and the Voidoids
Television
TV on the Radio
Rites of Spring
Heartsrevolution
Mika Miko
Orange Juice

Gogol Bordello!

They're a group of gypsy immigrants (mostly from Russia/Ukraine) and they play punk infused with traditional Eastern European stuff...so good! If you like Flogging Molly you'll love Gogol Bordello.

They have better songs but not with better videos and this one is still really good:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJlGutqFqfg

Speaking of Flogging Molly, they're mostly Irish and play punk with Irish influences and more people should listen to them, too:

I was going to suggest Gogol Bordello, I Would Never Want to be Old Again, is probably the best song in the past 10 years. Also, Eugene Hutz has the best mustache in music.

If anyone here likes punk, they should listen to Lower Class Brats.

*Runs around in circles.* I love disturbed. Anyway, I recommend Slayer. They are old but you don't get much better than them.

The Flight Of The Conchords, formerly New Zealand's fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo. These guys are great. I can't be bothered sending a link but look them up on Yotube.

That was awesome.

You know what this thread needs? Some Ratatat. Just had their third album come out, the video features scenes from Predator remixed. I don't have to explain how awesome it is.

They did a great remix of Paul Simon's video for 'You Can Call Me Al' as well.

Can, those of you who have'nt heard them MUST. The best album to start with is "Ege Bamyasi", you guys won't believe that was recorded in 1972, with a 2 track. What pop band I like? well I must admit that I really got into Everything But The Girl a while back ago (Jesus f..king Christ I can't believe I said it).

STARS
The New Pornographers
The Apostle of Hustle
The Most Serene Republic
Vampire Weekend
Metric
The Hold Steady

All runs along the lines of Melodic Indie Rock except for The Hold Steady (Throwback Classic-Style Rock) and Metric (Electronic-Hard-Weird-Dance Rock)

I'm really liking the band Arnocorps at the minute. I saw them last week live and they were brilliant. For those of you unfamiliar with them, they do songs based, and comprised entirely of lines from Arnie films, such as Total Recall - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVvA_nErFcA
Predator - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xizJZeGfE34
and Terminator - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kS4mRgd2NA
