Seriously?

When has forcing people to upgrade their OS EVER worked for MS?

O well...guess I'll wait.

I don't know your private situation so I can't really say much, but I sort of agree with the person above in this matter, especially considering Windows 10 runs on a toaster if need be.

Sure, it's a pain and people will probably hack it so that you can run it just fine on Windows 7 or Windows 8, but can you really expect a company not to attempt to move forward with their software?

Wow..Am I ever saddened that the first replies to this thread are in favor of companies forcing mandatory updates for a monopoly spyware and data collector OS program that could be replaced again whenever the shareholders feels their profit is not enough.

Seriously people. Stop enabling idiotic practices like these!

What computer and OS do you have at the moment? You know it's pretty much free right now yeah? And even if it's not an upgrade, there isn't much difference tbh even when you don't activate it. I'm running windows 10 via bootcamp on my Macbook, so I use 2 OS's. It's easy to get hold of. Windows is the OS you need for the majority of modern gaming if that's what you are using your computer for.

Also, if you are currently using an an older version of windows, know that 10 is a LOT better than most of their previous attempts, in my opinion. 7 and 8 (especially 8) were nowhere near as good as 10.

I have Win8.1

A version of Windows that I don't have to pay a damn yearly/monthly subscription to type shit up nor worry about it being 'helpful' by eating up all my data with updates.

This right here.
If anything, it is a downright scumbag move to make something exclusive to 10.

Come to think of it, you're right. We should all roll back to MS-DOS, or older operating systems and demand that companies start back-porting their applications so that we can use them on our older software, I'm particularly looking forward to downloading packets from the Escapist and reading through the raw HTML files in order to visit this site, fight back against the monopoly!🙋

This has to be one of the best replies Ive read in a while :D

Anyhow guys its not like every freaking other company out there is doing the same thing.....

Think about this from phone OS perspective or gaming console perspective....not all applications work on phones if its old enough, Apple especially is master at this with their iPhones..

Then we have gaming consoles, I mean ye its really rude for Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony to only support their current generation of hardware and "force" you buy these new game consoles by not brining new games anymore to their old ones...

Seriously either deal with this stuff or go to Mac or Linux user....good luck playing anything with those operating systems...

Whether you guys like it or not, Windows 7 and Windows 8 are becoming obselete in Microsoft's eyes, and ofc they want as many as possible to use their latest software and buy from THEIR store, I mean how dare they do such things....either deal with it or go other way and dont play these MS published games then, but bitching about is not going to change anything.

Also

"A version of Windows that I don't have to pay a damn yearly/monthly subscription to type shit up nor worry about it being 'helpful' by eating up all my data with updates."

Just where did you come up with this stuff Tanis? "yearly/monthly subcription to type shit up" ??? Seriously? I havent noticed paying any monthly fee :D

Is that what I said..? No.
Two can play the Hyperbole game if that is what you are after.
Enjoy paying through the nose for yearly OS versions with forced mandatory updates and a closed platform of exclusive programs and games..
Enjoy paying for every program on it and its updates through their own "app store", despite free open-source versions being available. Because of course they will invalidate non-vetted programs on THEIR OS.
Enjoy your surfing habits, used software and each and every keystroke being sent to their corporate servers for data analysis and used as a basis for profit-directed ads.
Enjoy the hyperbole. (except that even my attempt at hyperbole is closer to reality than yours..)

Now then. With that out of the way.
I see nothing wrong with new and improved versions of OS's and programs, but the people should decide if they think it is an improvement and when and how they update and upgrade. Not the company who already has a monopoly-like hold on the market.
These kinds of practices should be restricted through law since they foster an environment of non-competition and put their users in a Stockholm-syndrome situation. Much like the Steam DRM.

What do you mean? Do you mean office? You can use an older version of office rather than 365. office doesn't come with Windows generally anyway. Updates take up minimum space. I only use a small amount of room because most of SSD is taken up with High Sierra (I use a partitioned external Hard Drive for most of my storage including most of my games etc). It runs great.

While I agree with the others in this thread that Microsoft shouldn't be expected to support all their old as hell OSes, let's just look at this for what it really is. Microsoft doing their best to get people to use the Windows Store. The only thing that they would have to do to make this compatible with Windows 7 and up would be to put in DirectX 11 support, or perhaps even just Vulkan support. Seriously, that's it.

You read it here folks, if you don't accept blatant shitty practices by those poor hundred billion dollar monopolies, you are the idiot. How dare you complain!

Hey, people, here's a hint, when you are replying to peoples grievances with 'durrr they a company so its uh fine they wanna sell shit' or a variant of it, you are not being insightful, smart nor intelligent to any degree really. You are being a petulant cretin blighted with standards well below the line of decency.
Or I simply dont give a damn about these things other ppl complain and just want to play the games only available from Windows Store....quess that makes me dumb and a sheep, but honestly, the fact is that none of these things that seem to bother so many others with Windows 10 and Windows Store dont bother me, so I just leave it to that and go back to enjoy AoE Definitive Edition.

For those who Windows 10 for one reason or another is not an option, then you are either out of luck I quess or just wait and hope that it would be released in Steam eventually. Dont hold your breath though cause like said, most other recent Microsoft published games are not available from Steam either.

It's important to draw lines that you won't cross for Microsoft (or any corporation). In the future I imagine Windows will have forced ads in the start menu and on the desktop and driving those ads, forced malware. Where is the line for each of you? Are you willing to give up PC gaming if Microsoft crosses your line?

But... Windows 10 costs nothing and it actually is much better than Windows 8. I don't understand the problem.

Compared to 7 and 8, W10 is really restricting. Forced updates, the damn OS practically following your every step. I really wouldn't be suprised if they're gonna add ads on the desktop on the future.

You may understand the problem in the future and you may not but surely you can see that Microsoft has already crossed a line too far for some people?

Yeah, sure, people should be free to decide when to update their OS, same as companies should be free to decide not to make their new software compatible on older OS's.

It's a perfectly fine double edged sword, by locking new software to new OS versions the company runs the risk of customers not buying their software and by deciding not to update their OS, the user runs the risk of not being able to use new software. Seems like a fair deal for both?

About that hyperbole thing, this entire conversation could be had every single time a new version of Windows came out and software was released only for the newer version of Windows and because of that we might as well all roll back to MS-DOS in an attempt to fight the man because companies have been forcing people to update for quite some while now.

And I actually did quite enjoy your hyperbole, they were rather funny.

Well I'm primarily a MacOS user and I run Windows 10 in bootcamp so I haven't the authority to make a compelling argument for it. I will say that I really like it and I've had very few issues with it. The last PC I owned before my Macbook ran Windows 7. I I honestly like 10 more. It's mostly just getting used to the new interface. Most of how it operates seems fairly similar to me. It's definitely less prone to problems from what I've noticed.

I disabled notification centre, if that's what you are referring to about it following you around. You can regedit things to make it do what you want just like in previous versions of windows.

^^ Yup, and I?d think this would be a good thing. Actually that fact alone of the game requiring Win10 makes me more intrigued about it and what features it has that requires Win10 exclusively, or if it?s simply a marketing ploy.

The latter is doubtful though, since there isn?t any significant barrier to entry at this stage regarding Win10. As was mentioned above there was a generous free upgrade period, unless someone skipped Win7/8, in which case they probably weren?t even a gamer in the first place. Windows 10 was designed to be the most forward thinking, definitive OS they?ve ever had. We?ve already experienced that through the form of updates, which will continue to evolve it more efficiently beyond what the boxed numerical upgrades of the past entailed.

Technology changes, and eventually software needs to be upgraded like hardware. The difference is the former is more critical due to various external factors, yet it seems only the latter escapes the brunt of user uproar. Ironic, considering it typically also carries the significantly higher cost basis of doing so.

I?m also not aware of when these ?forced subscriptions? and ?yearly fees? are supposed to kick in, because going on three years using it I haven?t seen them yet. About Microsoft?s data collection and spying on us, well, possibly, but certainly no more than what google and Apple are doing. At least with Windows you still have the flexibility of minimizing if not eliminating it via regedit or the control panel itself.

I personally think it would be better if Microsoft finally ditched Xbox and started putting more resources into properly supporting DirectX PC gaming API?s. Let Sony and Nintendo have consoles. Maybe Apple can get into the fray if a third player is needed.
