Right so this is one of my favourite games ever and yet I cannot play it. I've been trying to install it and the set-up screen loads up fine but as soon as I select the install option the program freezes up and i have to open task manager to close it. Any ideas what I need to do?

(if this is in the wrong bored sorry, I couldn't decide between gaming and advice)

I'm not sure to be honest, I always tend to Google the name of these old games and add "windows 7" at the end.
You have however reminded me of a really good game I used to enjoy, so I thank you.

only thing i can think up is either a CD with scratches on it, or some other fluke of hardware ( e.g. is your pc still good enough even if its an old gam? maybe a fraggy hard drive?

hillbilly solution that might work: copy all files off the disk into a folder, then doubleclick install in that with the CD stil in for goo measue ( not sure if necesairy )

otherwise, torrent it, install it with your own serial cause im guessing your disk is just slightly friend in the wrong spot.

good luck!

Its defiantly not my PC that's for certain. At the moment I'm getting the latest patch for a game I haven't even installed.

First run it with compatibiliy options, disable visual themes and desktop composition first.

If that doesn't work, set it to run in compatibility mode with windows XP SP2, and check the box to run the exe as an admin. (the actual setup EXE on the disk mind you.)

That should do it.

Check the disc is alright? :/ If not, try googling it, see if there's something obvious that is missing.
[small]If not download it, that must be legal given you own the game already... right?[/small]
Such a classic game though, hope you can get it installed!

How do I run it with compatibility options?

Open up the CD (if double clicking the drive in My Computer runs the splash screen, right click, and choose open, or Explore)

Find Setup

Right click it, and then click Properties.

It'll bring up a menu, the tabs up top, one says "Compatibility" You'll find the options I described there.

Oh man Age of Mythology was great. I'm petty sure my copy fell victim to my mom's tidying up, though. Any idea where I can get it?

Turns out the game isn't compatible with windows 7 and what you suggested didnt work. Ah well, I will have to keep my nostalgia at bay

Age of Mythology is awesome. My copy works fine with Windows 7. Haven't had a single issue with it. The game is compatible with windows 7 - so it must be an issue on your end. Just one thing to remember is that you can't buy new copies and hope to play online. Microsoft messed up the production a few years back and now all new copies have the same cd-key.

I remember Age of Mythology. It was alright, I suppose. I remember the campaign was quite long though, and kind of novel with all the super powers I got to use to wreck things. XD

Ahh... nostalgia. Alas, my days of playing RTS games are pretty much over for good.

Alright, since I went and installed it, i'm like the others...worked fine.

So that means you're missing something important for the installer to run, see what you can find about updating windows.

And the only other thing I can think of is scan for viruses and malware, using...whatever anti-virus you use (or...get avast if you dont have anti-virus) and scan your computer with Malwarebytes to clear out the malware (anti-virus software generally does not look for malware)

Those 2 things would be the major causes of it just freezing up and not installed. Especially if it's supposed to work fine. and I -hope- that helps.
