Agent Smith in Talks to Play Red Skull in Captain America Movie

Hugo Weaving, known for playing Agent Smith in the Matrix movies, is in talks to play the villainous Red Skull in the Captain America movie.

Hugo Weaving has quite the list of geek credentials, he was the best character in the Matrix movies, he played V in Transformers [http://www.amazon.com/V-Vendetta-Widescreen-Hugo-Weaving/dp/B000FS9FCG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1278969163&sr=1-1] movies, but we won't hold that against him.

It would see that Weaving is looking to add another credit to his already impressive list by playing the Red Skull, the terrifying face of the Nazis and long-time foe of Captain America. The deal isn't final yet, but is excited nonetheless, and goes a small way to redeeming a movie that will apparently have musical numbers [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/98114-Captain-America-Movie-Will-Have-Musical-Numbers].

It's going to be great to see Captain America going toe-to-toe with his most insidious villain, and interesting to see how the makers of the movies work to Red Skull in. Sadly, we're going to have to wait until 2011 to find out.

Am I the only one sort of excited about the prospect of Hugo Weaving singing a gloriously evil villain song?

Ooh, oooooh! This could be interesting! Very interesting, indeed!

Here's a side question for you guys: How many of you have seen any of his movies before The Matrix? He's just as good in blockbusters like LotR and Happy Feet as he is in his indie films.

Damn, ninja'd by the first post!

OT: Musicals and Nazis go together like nothing else! Look at The Producers!

Uh, yeah, Cap's already tangled with Red Skull on the big screen. There was an early 90's Captain America movie and Red Skull was the bad guy.

It sucked. Hard.

Hugo weaving is f*cking amazing. He plays the best characters in any movie:
Agent Smith (Matric)
King Elrond (Return of the Kings)
V (V for Vendetta)

Fixed for you. And I don't call Transformers a "movie". I call it a "piece of trash".

aren't you elitist. (how was that on topic..?
and failing to fix the 'c' to and 'x' in matrix
i just hope we can have something like the fakeout HEIL! handshake shooting in the 90's one.
(see nostalgia critic on the movie to see the scene, it's early.)
i am cautious about this movie, as it appears to be a musical...

Well, it fits. The guy's a great villain. Hopefully he can do a decent German accent. But then again good casting doesn't mean good movie. Look at Arthur Dent in the Hitch Hikers movie.

BTW, I know this really has no relevance, but I just love this image of Red Skull.

I dunno, Agent Smith seemed more to be a refined villain archetype where the Red Skull is just more of a screaming psychopath.

fan-freaking-tastic Hugo Weaving rocks on so many levels. If anything can redeem the decision to add musical numbers *cringe* to the movie I may just be this, you know in addition to a fantastic script that in addition to being action packed nicely sets up a transition into an Avengers movie

He was great in Priscilla: Queen of the Desert.

And yes, he has the perfect look for any supervillain.
