Good policy poorly implemented. It covers the airlines responsibilities and isn't out of line. Besides it probably plainly spelled out in all the fine print no one reads. Upgrades for either the male nurse or the kid would be a nice solution but I guess not possible if the flight is fully booked. I doubt there would have been any news story if the flight attendant had thanked the nurse and explained that it was just company policy and nothing personal in any way.

While discrimination is bad in any form, I'd like to ask a more important question, Who the hell lets a 10 year old fly unattended?
I had a cousin who's mom lived in California and his dad in Wisconsin. Both parents wanted to see the kid, but neither could afford to fly with him. Simple solution, parent waits with him until he got on the plane, and the other parent was waiting there when he landed. I don't think they had a single issue.

which dialect are you using in your avatar? the way i understand it, it reads 'deal hith it' o.o;;

OT: maybe we can take it as a good sign when we have to reach so far down into the barrel of trivial matters for things to complain about. 1'st world problems, yeah?
I use the Futhorc dialect, it's the one J.R.R. Tolkien used for his Dwarven Runes in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. I've never seen any dialect use a Wynn rune (The angular P shape) for an H.

While such a situation is unfortunate, it really doesn't change the fact that sending someone as young as 10 unaccompanied is not a responsible thing to do.

Ugh, what a pile of horse shit.

I totally know I'd get singled out for this. The un-manly drawback to having a manly beard.

oh. i was exposed to and learned a variation that was based on those, but were slightly different, and the P symbol was the an H :p

OT: sorry. i got really off topic there. >.> uh, ok, i guess it's time to put some points into rally support to make up for the lost momentum... "man, those feminists. how dare they. just because he's a man doesn't mean he's a molestor." good? good.

A pro tip; If you have a big manly beard that makes you look like a biker or something, wear glasses and you'll instantly become a professor.

What a great way to lose profits!
I imagine that if I was asked to move seats because I might be a molester, I would never use that airline again. And I'm fairly certain many people would feel the same way in such a situation.

First off, I'm extremely biased in this manner. That said, parents with kids need to seriously get their shit together or piss off. What do I mean by this? Most airlines assign their stuff randomly, you go to the airport early and ask the people at the desk to sit you and your kid together, don't come at the last minute and get shafted with the omg I'm not seated next to my kid.
You might ask why I have a harsh reaction. I'm a guy who is 6'3 and I always come early to the airport whenever I fly to get the seats with extra leg room. I learned the hard way my first flight where the dick in front of my refused to heed my pleas to not recline because it was squashing my knees, and my complaints to the flight attendant were "sorry we can't force him to not recline." I ended up with a painful subdural hematoma in my knee that lasted for a good year.

And on other flights I've gotten shafted by parents with kids. Oh sorry sir can you move from the seats with extra leg room we are prioritizing them for kids, WHAT?! WHY?! So the snot nosed brat can swing his legs back and forth like he's in a jungle gym? Tell that kid to sit in a normal seat and have him stfu.

Or the ever hilarious, oh you're in a 3 seat section and you get asked to move because the parent doesn't want someone sitting next to their kid.

Also every time this has happened, or I've seen it happen it's always the person next to the kid who is asked to move, why not move the kid. Hey the mother wants to sit next to the kid and a stranger comes to sit with you. In both cases there is no under text of sorry you might be a child molester.
If the person getting asked to move they better be compensated, putting them in any crappy condition is absolute BS.

the last place i want to sit on a long flight is next to some annoying kid, so this is great! I get to move seats! Sit me next to that hot woman over there instead! her ugly friend can move over here and babysit this kid.

Your comment on muslims was my thoughts exactly. Imho, I think we have P.C. to thank for this. No one cares about offending a man, unless he's a minority, and being a minority has something to do with the discrimination.

I'm neither racist nor sexist, and I wish everyone would simply treat everyone equally, but political correctness ends up doing the exact opposite of its original intent.

J.R.R Tolkien? I thought I recognized those runes.

They could do the win-win thing where the man gets upgraded to business class or the child gets upgraded.
They get separated to a part of the plane where they can be easily monitored, neither party gets offended and it shouldn't come at such a colossal cost to the airline since they upgrade people at random already (over booking the flight etc).
^This. Even though the entire premise is irrational fear-mongeringly stupid, it wouldn't have been so bad if they had at least said "We're sorry for the inconvenience, we know how stupid this is, but it's corporate policy. We just have to go along with it, so please allow us to upgrade you to a better seat."

I LIKE WHERE THIS THREAD IS GOING

OT: Most of the time, people just use the word miss dry when they're being called out on being sexist douches, but there is no other word more appropriate for what is going on here. This just propagates a potentially harmful stereotype that all molesters are male.

Is it sad that even as a guy I am much more concerned with why there is an unattended child than this possible sexist policy?

So, we live in a time where every man is regarded as a pedophile rapist. Great!

Oh fuck off! If we're putting it into potential possibilities then anyone can be a molester!
You see that person walking down the street? MOLESTER
Your neighbor? MOLESTER
Your girlfriend? MOLESTER
You? MOLESTER
Nothing is safe! Anyone could rape you at any time! Don't go outside! TRUST NOBODY!
