Hey all!

I'm really interested in taking up Airsoft, since paintball is so dreary and samey, with terrible tech behind it.

The range of Airsoft guns is amazing, and it looks to me like you'd actually be able to snipe, or go close or medium range depending on what you're packing. Silly escapism? Perhaps, but I'd like to go beyond 'CoD' and do something that tests my own physical capabilities.

In short, does anyone play and would they recommend it? Any tips on what to do best? Rent from the range or buy your own?

Thanks!

I play it, usually once a month, and yes, I would recommend it.
If you are just starting it would be good to find game fields near you, its better and safer then playing in your backyard, but you probably knew that.
Getting your own gun is a good idea because you don't know if they will always have rentals available

Also I would say find a forum dedicated to airsoft there you can ask more spesific questions and find games.

I don't like airsoft, even though I have had some airsoft guns in the past. Oddly, I don't find firing a real gun nearly as exciting as working the bolt on a rifle. Airsoft doesn't give me that pleasure. Some of my neighbours will run around with swords and fight me, but if we want gunfights we stick to video games.

As a fencer, let me say that no video games come close to fencing. I think that an airsoft fight wouldn't be substantially different from an FPS anyway, other than the obvious differences in interface and movement.

It looks extremely fun and the bullets seem to fly straight! Unfortunately it's banned here in Australia so I can't play it. :(

I am going to Bali later this year so I might get my chance then.

If you are good with VFX you can make some really cool video's with Airsoft. Check out "Freddiew" on youtube to see what I'm talking about.

Pick up an $20 pistol from your nearest box store and mess around first.

Shooting people is always fun when non lethal. So yes you should at least try it if you are interested. Buy your own gun for sure and get a whole bunch of neat stuff to stick on it like lights and lasers and scopes and fore-grips.

I wish Simunition came into mainstream games rather than being used for military training. But I could see that going wrong so easily since you are using real weapons with colored soap bullets, and all it takes is one idiot to put in the real bullets to turn a fun day into a not fun one.

I'm a pretty big fan of airsoft, so I would recommend it.

I would recommend, however, that you buy your own gun. Field rentals can run from about $20-$30, and that adds up pretty quickly. You can get a decent-quality starter gun for about $100-$250 from any respectable airsoft shop. Brands I'd recommend for a lower-priced gun would be CYMA, ECHO 1 and Double Eagle. Good guns to look at would be from the M16/M4, AK, G36, and MP5 families. They're relatively common, and therefore easy to get repairs and spare parts for.

Go on Google and look around to see what kind of fields are in your area. Each field is different, so it might take a while to find a place that you like. If you like fast-paced games, then a CQB field might work for you. If you prefer longer, more drawn out matches, then a larger outdoor field might be to your taste.

We're the country with no R18+ rating for video games remember. The government believes people will try to rob banks or something stupid like that...

I have played for a few years and got some stuff to help you out.

Firstly, if you have friends, then see if you can use their guns, i don't do that anymore though, im the guy that lends the guns! It's great because if you have reliable friends who keep their batteries charged and their stuff together, you really dont need a gun of your own, because you are there for the fun right? Also idk what you mean by renting from the range, if there's a store that does rentals sure, but i had reliable friends back when i started.

Now the only things you'll be needing are a gun, its mags, bb's, a cleaning rod, and a battery with charger, thats all you need. Some people like to dress in full ACU's and camo, they make themselves look like they came straight from the rangers, all sorts of wingdings on their uniform and stuff, im not one for cosplay but if you want to do that sure, but i'd invest in the primary gun before accesories... (I think some people wear those big costumes just so the bb's hurt less, the wimps... No bb's dont hurt that bad, most AEG's only fire around 200-300 feet per second, and if you follow the rules and say that you got hit when you got hit, then you wont be hurt.)

Lastly the gun, there are many types, Gas (butane, green gas, and co2 canisters) which commonly powers an average grade sidearm, Spring (Pump guns, some bolt-action snipers i think, and cheaper), And electric (AEG's, battery powered, typically what you want if you do matches commonly). I always reccomend AEG's for their automatic fire, reliability, and user friendlieness (no smelly gases and leaks). You dont have to go over $200 to get the right gun for you, I dont know your price range but a gun i'd reccomend is this one:

http://www.airsoftpost.com/product_info.php?products_id=27598

I don't want to reccommend a billion diffrent guns, so i'll reccommend one that's perfect. Many people have tested it, and it's always been praised for its value. I've used this one alot when i started off and never had a problem with it. It also has room for plenty of attachments if you become Mr. Accessories. It already has a folding stock, which is exellent for close quarters. It also has mags that clip together, so you can do the dual mag thing from Black Ops, very useful. Overall it's a superb gun for the price. I also don't think you'll enjoy sniping, it's a niche few people fill in airsoft and i don't want you do be prone for an hour wishing you could just hit someone...

I hope you get all you can out of Airsoft! (And i hope this was a help too!)

Yeah definitely at least give it a try but cool quite a few times before you buy any of your own gear just to make sure its something you want to stick with cause it can be pretty expensive to start up.That said its a lot cheaper than paint ball in the long run as at paint ball its like 7 pounds for 100 paint balls and at airsoft its 6 pounds for 3000 pellets. Unfortunately power over airsoft gun controls maybe be getting switched to holyrood(the Scottish parliament) or at least I think thats whats happening which could result in them being banned outright so that's not good for people like me that live in Scotland.

I've just been playing for a couple of months now, however it's a great game (especially when you have seven friend playing with you in the same squad). Since I live in Sweden we have gotten a permit to play in the woods near where I live so there is no cost for renting a playing field.

I would suggest looking up what army you wish to play as and get the appropriate gun since I find it much more rewarding showing up i full BDU and correct tactical gear. Personally I use a JG G36k with a precision barrel and it does about 120 m/s. Sadly my hop-up unit is bust but I have ordered the spare part so soon I can use it again.

I'll be making my first order of airsoft stuff pretty soon, and it'll be costing me over ?200 for everything, but it is so worth it.

I've played a few times, and it is actually so much fun! I'll repeat what others say and get something cheap and common such as an M4 or a G36. M4s come with a lot of rails so it is worth checking that out anyway (and they are as common as fuck in Ireland anyway.) But definitely play a few games first if you haven't, better not to pay out a good bit and find out that it is not your thing.

I love it! My friends and I go out on week long camp outs with twenty or so people and have massive wars!

If you are going to get into it I would recommend buying your own and going for higher end guns. The plastic ones are good for one or two fights, but tend to break quickly, you will be better off with full metal in the end. Also be sure what you want your load out to be, the good guns can get really pricey and you don't want to end up with stuff you don't like.

I run this http://www.weaponblender.com/index.php?productID=360 with a 2x scope and this http://www.weaponblender.com/index.php?productID=1074. I got both from weapon blender and I highly recommend them. They have some really good deals and so far no one I know have had any problems with their guns.

If you have any more questions lemme know. I could go on for forever if I don't stop myself now. x3

if you do get into airsoft i recommend not doing it in doors me and 5 friends set up a scenario where we split up into teams with my house as the battle field we probably used 6000 of those little yellow beads during that one fight alone and to this day im still finding those damn things around my house
