I have but three tips for you:
  • [strong]Wear protective goggles.[/strong]
    Basic stuff here.

Don't go cheap with Walmart if you really get into it.
The Walmart shotguns are a good starting point, but if you buy online you can get some good stuff for a good price if you shop around. Be prepared for wildly varying user reviews though :(

    Establish some ground rules.
The BB's are annoying as hell to clean up in certain areas, and can get launched by lawnmowers into windows. Test them out and have battles where you know it's safe and leave the orange tips on (if you decide to spray-paint the guns, do it with the orange tip taken off leave the mechanics unharmed).

Hurts? naaah it is nowhere close to Paintball type of hurts.
Also if you are playing with experienced people they usually have something for mid-long ranges and a sidearm pistol for close quarters(15ft and closer).
When we play we usually are out in full uniforms, so sometimes in the heat of the action it is a big problem to tell if you got hit. So, pretty much it only hurts if you are crazy enough to play it on the beach naked.
Ehhh, so many mixed results, I guess I'll just have to go out and get shot and see how bad it hurts lol.
Well, wear goggles and cover you face with a neoprene mask with small airholes with the nose the only - if barely - bare spot and it's guaranteed the guy with the most powerful sniper rifle will hit you in the nose-opening. =)

By the way. Funny story, I hit another player also in the nose with the very same kind of rifle earlier... Without aiming and from hip level. (I get a lot of good shots like that with rifles, such as holding the gun a feet above my head, while can't seem to hit anything when I try the same with a sidearm from 5 meters.[footnote]One guy did take a hit though... But admitted later I didn't actually get him but he just got afraid I would. CO2 guns can make an impressive noise. But still, no damn progress for my pistol quick-draw skills. I got it entirely the wrong way around for a sniper[/footnote])

It's actually pretty random how much it will hurt. I was the other time shot point blank in the chest full-auto (by a friendly goddamnit, one that I yelled an advice 3 seconds ago from the same direction I came from) didn't hurt much at all. Doubt that gun was upgraded. Thighs are a surprisingly painful place to get hit, while knuckes, face and other bony spots are rather obvious. But still, sometimes it does not make much difference, might be related to the power of the gun or just managing to get hit in some random nerve spot.

Oh, and about face hits: Besides that it's a bad tactic to aim for the head, it's also usually considered bad taste to deliberately go for headshots if avoidable (it's still perfectly acceptable if it's the only thing you can see when the opponent is behind conver). Still should think twice if the guys mouth seems a likely place to hit and he has no protection there - though you definitely should wear at least light protection over your teeth. I've been hit there though I was lucky enough to not have a tooth broken. A friend was not so lucky, and while not the case with him, it can easily happen from even longer distance with fairly low-power guns. I wear one of these myself. [http://www.varusteleka.fi/pictures/2006.jpg][footnote]It might be hard to find a mask-goggles combo that doesn't cause your breath to mist the latter, not to mention classes if you need to wear them. You could always wear net mask, however I don't recommend. The really thight ones impair your vision more or less, while the ones with larger holes are good-for-nothing since the pellets will break and the shrapnel will fly against your eyes. Better try and invest in goggles and just try to find that mask or even modify one that works well with the goggles. A small holed net mask will do at first though, if you can't loan a better one from someone.[/footnote]
Proper shoes are also a must.

What else..? Oh yeah, don't buy too much expensive stuff right away and try to loan guns from other airsofters to try out different kinds before deciding what kind you are seriously gonna invest in. I've heard too many times of people buying a +300? sniper only to find out they decided sniping sucks shortly after.
Also, read reviews and more reviews and even more reviews before deciding what gun to buy. Even some cheap chinese guns are formidable now days, at least with some minor alterations (my sniper is one of these 140 m/s, good aim, 120?. Another 120? invested in new hop-up and barrel and it's now as accurate as it gets and still cheap for its power class... However, modification is not the first thing beginner should think about). Anyway, you find a gun you might want buy, do some research first. There are a lot of things to take into account.

One more thing, if somewhat random one: if you get a scope for whichever gun, magnifying is only useful up to x2-3, x4 max. Anything more higher is only useful for spotting god-moodders.[footnote]Though it ruins just as much the game to scream this during a game as actual god-modding does. Be polite about it and take into account that the possibility that you didn't see correctly or he simply didn't notice. I, for one, will usually walk to the off-game area without any more argument than "Are you really sure you hit me?" and "I didn't notice" if I'm firmly told that I was hit. It's gentleman's game and based on honesty. Leave the arguments for after the game and be civil about it.[/footnote] =)
Reddots are pretty damn neat, even an unmagnifying one seems to get better results even with a sniper than a regular magnifying scope, at least for me. Really recommend eventually (most won't do all the purchases right away after all) getting a one if you get into the hobby.

I think I've ranted enough now, I hope you'll enjoy airsoft.

It looks incredibly fun to me, more so than paintball because the weapons look better, no wobbly canister of paintballs on top, things like that. I'd love to play, really do, but I don't have anyone to go into it with nor have heard of an airsoft organisation anywhere near were I live.
