Now it is time to upgrade to a new, manly, slimfast model!

And if you haven't got enough money, you could sell the old one to someone on the street who doesn't know its dead ;)
That would be wrong.
Sell it on ebay as broken people will buy it for the parts. Also buy an xbox.

The worst part is the newer ones aren't compatible with PS1/2 games. I even went out of my way to buy a fat one thinking it would be old enough to have compatibility but no luck.

I feel your pain though, I got mine release day back in 2006 and it died December 27th, 2010.
not that it rly matters, but slims actually play ps1 gamees.

Take it as a sign: Stalker just Chernobyl'd your PS3. It wants to be played.

Anyways, Yes, I have had my PS3 YLOD on me as well, I was too lazy to send it off to Sony at first and it sat around for about two weeks before I sent it. got it back a week later. Then had to send it back again days later cause the HDMI audio didn't work.. But since then, all aces. It lastest roughly 4 years.

I highly suggest you get cracking on Shadow of Chernobyl while it's on vacation at the Sony Spa. Better yet, google "Oblivion Lost Mod" and attach it. Adds enemies, smarter AI, new armor sets, weapons, weapon skins, Omission storms that change everything, and a AfterMath mode that continues on from after you beat the story, you can join any faction (including military, bandits, and monolith (lolwut?)) and do missions for them.

I personally joined Monolith so I could run around the NPP and Pripyat without getting my ass handed to me

Go on ebay, buy yourself an original model that plays PS2 games.

Drop your old HDD in the new one, new HDD in the old one and then sell it on ebay to someone who fixes them.

Solved. You're out a bit of money, but can still play PS2 games and keep your data.

The old 60gb PS3 i have had the disc drive problem, and the previous owner fixed it himself. Had mine about 6 months now, no problems apart from considering dropping a bigger HDD in it, but that just seems like effort.
