Avatar, as mentioned.
And, while not just one story, the 'nids from Warhammer.
They've got a serious case of the munchies, I can relate; they're not evil so much as just really goddamn hungry.

Well the Transformers movie might count, since if the bad alien robots won, I wouldn't have to listen to the annoying human cast anymore.

Signs because just fuck everyone in that movie.
I'd agree with you because that movie is fucking terrible...but it's really hard to root for a race of aliens so fucking stupid that they invade a planet covered mostly in water, a substance that reacts to their body as though it were sulfuric fucking acid.

Oh sure, they've mastered interstellar travel to reach out planet from the depths of space, but they can't tell that if they land on our planet their chances of melting are nearly 100%? For god's sake, the best way to protect yourself from the aliens is to leave your fucking yard sprinklers on!

I liked Signs. It was the last good Shyamalan movie. Though I'll concede mileage varies tremendously with this movie, for some reason.
See above for why the aliens in that movie were terrible. As for why the message behind the movie is terrible, the message of "everything happens for a reason, it's all part of god's plan", lets go over that plan, shall we?

-God kills Mel's wife.
-Mel loses faith in god.
-God sense alien invasion to earth.
-Mel remembers his wife's dying words which end up saving the family from the water-phobic aliens.
-Mel regains his faith thanks to God's divine plan.

Sum total: God killed Mel's wife to strip him of his faith only to send an alien invasion with the express purpose of letting Mel regain his faith.

Thanks M. Night Shabamalamadingdong! Another fan-frickin'-tastic story, bro! Let's go kill ourselves because the plants are pissed!

Probably Space Invaders. Eventually it stops being a story about a lone tank trying to protect Earth and instead becomes the tragic tale of thousands of alien fighters charging to their deaths. Eventually you realize the ALIENS are the underdogs. Why are the aliens invading? How desperate must they be to send in thousands of soldiers, hoping desperately that just ONE fighter will manage to make it through the killing fields? Why are they using antique battle strategies abandoned after WW1? What must the alien pilots feel like, charging to their deaths, knowing there's a .003% chance of survival? Is their planet dying? Are they trying to protect their families? After a while you just feel kind of guilty...

DA ORKS IZ DA BES FER FIGHTIN' AN' WINNIN'

Of all the races in Warhammer 40000, the Orks are the ones I root for the most.

The Eldar are supremely arrogant and cannot accept responsibility for their role in creating Slaanesh, nor can they accept that their time has long since passed.

The Necrons are intent on either wiping out and harvesting other races, or putting them in big collections like Trazyn the infinite. And they can't stop fighting each other over petty dynasty struggles millions of years old.

The Tyranids are an individual mind that only exists to feed, and they might be the harbingers of something even worse.

The Dark Eldar took to piracy and sadomasochism to hide from Slaanesh.

Humanity birthed three of the Chaos Gods, wallow in ignorance, and have routinely been responsible for the largest wars in galactic history. It's either mass slaughter or a police state.

The Tau are naive to the dangers of the galaxy at large, and they are prone to going rogue without the leadership of the Ethereals. See Farsight's enclaves for renegade Tau forces.

But the Orks? Conflict is their way of life. The strong get stronger, the weak get crushed underfoot, and there is no ill will. Orks don't hold grudges, if they lost it was because the stronger being won. It is a sign of respect that the Iron Ork continues his fight with Commissar Yarrick, the only humie strong enough to take him in a fight. They love war and winning, so any fight is a good fight. In essence, they are about the purest form of life in the galaxy, the physical manifestation of combat, not subject to the whims of manipulative gods or obstructive bearaucrats.

Eldar all the way.

Some people call them defenders of the status quo and being used by GW to keep the 40k timeline permanently at 2 minutes to midnight but lately I like to get behind the idea that they wish to right the wrongs of their fall as well as prevent the younger races from succumbing as they did. Some Craftworld's definition of prevention however is 'kill them before they do something stupid' which I entirely agree with.

I play Eldar and so obviously root for them in an invasion because they never commit to a battle that isn't worth the chance of casualties. Striding forth in resplendent armour of bright colours in a dark universe and dispensing death to upstarts and old foes, the Eldar go to war with pride in their craft and surety of their prowess. They don't swarm a planet like typical alien invaders but meticulously plan every detail to counter their opponents superior numbers.

The main point I would like to make also is that it would be all to easy for the Eldar to just hide within their craftwords and wait for slow and quiet death as they slip from the universe into barely registered memory. Instead they remind the younger races who once ruled the stars, ward against the dark threats to the galaxy and pursue an active penance for their actions in the fall.

That reminds me - is there any game in which elves (as this is essentially what Eldar are) aren't stuck-up assholes?

My choice would have to be Spaced Invaders. But only because the aliens were just as pathetically stupid as we humans.

But the Ewoks aren't the alien invaders, they're the natives. The Imperial troops are the invading aliens in that scenario.

I have to second The Race. Not only for who they are fighting against, put how pitifully, terrifyingly naive they are. The poor scaly schmucks do their best, but they really have no idea what's going on or how anything works on Earth. They just aren't cut out for this nasty war business or the even nastier politics business that follows.

And Signs. These poor guys have been sent to conquer the acid planet with their bare hands. I can only assume that they have committed some horrible crime on their home world and that this the only way to redeem themselves.

The Eldar kind of have to...because of Slannesh. As soon as they start being anything more than cold and callous bastards and actually get some feels, Slannesh eats their soul. True story.

OT: Avatar and District 9, of course. And any game where I'm playing the invading alien. Destroy All Humans, for instance.

...and they got their asses handed to them by a bunch of teddy bears armed with sticks and rocks.

I was embarrassed enough with Stormtroopers being incapable of hitting the broad side of a barn if they were in it, but that was a new low.

With everyone saying Avatar, I feel obligated to post this.

Humanity, fuck yeah!

That being said, District 9 was a fantastic film, as it didn't portray the aliens as hell-bent destroyers, but as mindless prawns who just wanted to live.

That being said, it is my duty to remind you all that collaboration and tolerance of the alien is both highly illegal, and highly heretical. Aliens will lie and deceive you, for they are weak and cannot face the forces of mankind in honorable battle. Stay true to the Emperor, and purge the alien.
You gunna get purged

I rooted for the Invaders during Iron Sky the whole way through. I was actually sad that they didn't win.

History would have sure been interesting.

Regardless the future of that universe will all be written in Finnish.

I don't think 40K has much in the way of alien "invaders" except the humans and the Tyranids, so yeah.

Otherwise, Avatar I would have been more sympathetic towards the invaders if they weren't total dicks half the time (though the natives were total dicks 3/4 of the time). I really need to read the Worldwar series sometime (think that's what it's called).

The first that comes to mind would be Revan's attempted conquest of the Galaxy in Star Wars.

Not really alien though, so I guess I'll also throw my vote for the Aliens from the Matrix Universe. And yes, that was an apparently a thing. http://matrix.wikia.com/wiki/Goliath_(pilot)

I wanna see them fight the Machines. That would be Biblical.
