Oh, golly gee, it's a Versus Thread. So much fun...

Anyway, sarcasm aside, it's Aliens for me. While I admire Alien for being an excellent film, I just wasn't feeling it with the whole horror thing. It may be that I didn't watch it in a very scary environment, but I just didn't find the film scary. Tense? Yes. Scary? No. Also, my dad decided to summarize the entire plot for me as a kid (which he also did with other horror films), so I knew what to expect. He even ruined the chestburster scene.

Aliens, however, he didn't really spoil, so when we watched it, all the twists and turns of the plot were new. It also does the whole action/horror thing very well, making for a tense, gripping experience.

Alien 3 I hated. It wasn't a bad movie, but it just doesn't fit the Alien series very well. Alien 3 was originally going to be about a war between the Xenomorphs and humans on Earth, which would have been awesome, but never ended up happening.

Alien: Resurrection was stylistically really cool, and was more of a return to form, but Alien 3 had already killed the franchise, and Resurrection had enough issues that it couldn't revive the series on its own.

Alien isn't as nearly as scary once you know about the aliens and the chestburster. I wish I never knew about the chestburster scene...

Aliens however is still good whether or not you know about 'em.

Yeah. My dad described the chestburster scene to me in pretty gory detail as a kid. I honestly don't know how in hell I turned out as close to normal as I did with that guy raising me.

I have to go with Aliens. One Xenomorph is awesome, but a whole colony full of killer aliens is just insane. Plus, in Alien the Xenomorph was just picking off crew of a ship, which is great for horror, but not too much for action. But, in Aliens it is a squad of battle hardened Marines versus a hive of Xenos, which was just a perfect combination of action and horror to me.

Well I saw the lawnmower scene when I was 10-11 and I'm fine too :p. Some people take gore better than others. Whether it's a gift or a curse, I don't know.

definitely aliens. Just because theres moar of them :)
And the queen.
And the quotes.
And bill paxton.

alien was still great though, but i watched aliens first so it didnt have as much of an effect on me. Didnt see the ending sequence coming though!

Still, must have been great. Like my dad said, back then there was nothing like it before. Seeing the chestburster before everyone knew what it was, haha :p

Its sorta a question about which do you like better, Action movies or Horror movies?

For me? Action movies. So I like Aliens better.

"It's game over man, game over. What are we gonna do now, huh? What are we gonna do? We're FUCKED!"

Yeah, I prefer Aliens. It's just more fun. The first one was cool too, but Aliens was better all 'round.

That's a tough one, they're both brilliant. Hmmm...

Gonna have to go with Alien. The directing was just brilliant and the cinematography top-notch. That scene near the end where the last crew member are trying to escape is just breathtaking for example. Hell the only reasonable flaw I can even find in that movie is the scene with the, erm, head for lack of better way to describe it. The effects there just weren't enough to hide the obvious switch from prop to actor. Of course the only reason that one detail stands out so much is because everything else is just damned near perfect!

Neither. It depends on which genres you like better. Both are very good within their niche.

The film is tame compared to the book, I actually know people that went to see it at the cinema and laughed at that scene.

I prefer Aliens, this will sound really weird, but it feels really homely, I could fall asleep watching that film.

I prefer Aliens due to its perfectly equal blend of action and horror, with a whole colony of Xenomorphs tearing through the cast. Alien, which only had one Xenomorph, kind of focused more on the horror part and takes a bit of time to really get there. I haven't seen the Alien films in a while, but Alien probably had more tension, so I guess that's one thing it has over Aliens.

Also, Ellen Ripley seems to be more established as a character here, because in Alien, she only really becomes the main character, instead of as part of an ensemble, towards the end.

You're comparing two very different films. I've yet to watch them both properly, so I can't say which is better in my opinion.

I really do love the first one but Aliens is one of my favourite films.

While the first one sets a great atmosphere the second one just has more going on in the action department.

Alien : Brilliant Horror film and a great intro to the universe.

Aliens: Amazing sci-fi action film and a great sequel.

Can't compare them personally, they are both brilliant in their own ways.

3 was trying to hard to be like both of them and failed miserabally.

Ressurection was OK, but really could have been better, and would have made a great opener to another trilogy based on earth.
