This is final proof that there is no God. There's so little interest in literacy nowadays that we as a society will allow one of its biggest supporters in the most economically powerful and influential country on Earth to simply wither and die. And please, don't give me crap about the Kindle and Nook and all that bullshit. It's all a completely different and frankly vastly inferior medium.
Do you care more about what the text is on than what the text consist of?

My main regret is that I didn't go to the computer/programming section when my local store had reached 70% off in its closing down sale. Those books are always the last to go.

This makes me sad for a few reasons. One of them being I prefered Borders to Barne's and Nobles but now I seem to have no choice - except the occasional and awesome personally owned bookstore. The other reason is complete digitization of books. To me, nothing beats the insurance of owning a physical object instead of just a digital one. When everything becomes digital it becomes increasingly easy for someone, or some kind of accident, to throw a wrench in your life and disrupt your day to day actions.

Now I might be a tad paranoid but this is just my opinion. I will always prefer owning a physical object to owning the 'right to download' a digital one.

All the people crying/pissed off about the Borders closure are tragically confused. It charged RRP for all its books (and in some cases, ABOVE RRP) and it's a mega-conglomerate chain bookshop. I'm frankly glad those arseholes are going out of business. Bring back the small-time, local bookshops, with their quirky interiors and local books etc.

Didn't Borders close down already? Well they did in the UK which I really missed the one in Ellesmere Port since that place was HUGE (and had a huge section on Manga)!
Still it sad that all of it are closing now although to me the other book store Waterstone sort of fill the void.

My wife and I happened to walk into the Perth Border's store on one of their final days of a "sell everything including the fixtures" sale.

It was.. truly sad and disturbing. Watching the hordes of people, more people than I'd ever seen in there, scavenging over the remains... the staff were all dressed in black and other dark colours as if in mourning.

I can't read Ebooks, I hate them, and while I understand while people do.. the idea that we may be slowly seeing the end of the bookstore is incredibly depressing to me.

I actually thought that Borders had shut down a couple of years ago. The one in Leeds shut down a couple of years ago, and I couldn't find one in Nottingham. It's a shame they are shutting down, I understand the convenience of a Kindle, but nothing beats a proper cover and pages version of a book for me. I have heard that Waterstones is in trouble as well, so I hope they don't shut down as well.

This is really bad. Borders is one of the best places to buy books. I know of one that closed down in Islington, London a few months/year ago and I was sad to see it go.

This. And the only 2 bookstores within 150 miles of me were borders. I guess I'll be buying all my books at amazon now.

Did you get any nice lamps out of it at least?

All the Borders I was ever capable of visiting in the UK shut down about 3 years ago so I'm well past the point of being particularly fussy about it. Although on a slightly unrelated note, I wouldn't mind seeing what used to be my local Border's finally become something else since it's been an empty building for about 3 years.

This really sucks, the only real bookstore close to where I live was Borders. When the news of this first came up my dad gave me a Borders gift card that he had sitting around to use before they went under so I got World War Z.

You can't replace the smell of a fresh, new book as you open it up. Or the feeling of the pages. That sounds weird all typed out. But I'm sticking to it.
Hell, you can't replace the smell of an old book (which IMO is even better). And yeah, the weight of a book in your hands is reassuring, and there's a certain... character in a book that you borrow or have (creases in the spine, the dog-eared pages of the ones you re-read, the colour of the pages, the feel of the paper etc.). Totally get where you're coming from on that one.

OT: I wasn't the biggest fan of Borders, though I remember buying a lot of my manga from there (when I first got into it). Popping in to the Charing Cross road branch became a habit for me on Saturdays... *sigh*

No! I hate virtual books! It takes the feeling away and my closest borders has so much variety.

Why!?

Hmmm, I think this may be good news in my area. In my town, all there are for books are two stores: A Borders, and a smaller statewide chain store. I've started buying my books from the smaller store since they tend to have better prices than Borders, if not as good a selection, but you can order stuff pretty easily. And I can probably find some great deals at the Borders liquidation sale!

IMO, books are a little obsolete and I haven't bought a physical book (except for school) in ages, but this makes me a little sad. If only because Borders was a meeting place in my local mall.
Tell that to the EMP device that wipes out all your solid state drives.
