I doubt GW2 will hold a candle to WoW.
Anet is having enough trouble with the first one, what makes anyone think they can fix the second?

I think by this point, the only thing that will topple WoW will be its age. There will be no WoW killing game; it'll probably be the first (and last) huge social network game with such a following until an MMO that utilizes Facebook comes along.

GW2 can have a large following, be an excellent game and be free (like the first game, actually) but GW2 will require more than that to kill WoW.

Why am I reminded of when I used to care about paper and dice RPG and how everyone was hoping some new game was going to unseat Dungeons & Dragons as the best selling, most popular RPG? And oddly, they stupidly rested their hopes on some fantasy game that was for all its slap and tickle, just a D&D rip-off.

Honestly, why am I reminded of that?[/quote

Don't know, perhaps you shouldn't be asking personal questions online, it comes off as really juvenile.

You can't kill WOW... Its like a Hydra tbh. All these coming MMO's may have large playerbases and such but WOW won't "die".

Oh, any my money is on SCII coming out before Duke Nuke'em then GWII. Shortly after Armageddon of course...

I wrote an entire term paper on why Guild Wars is sadly ignored by the media; if not by players, considering that it IS the only MMO to come close to WoW's reported player base: Guild Wars has 6.5 million players, and lately that number is growing at about 1 million players every 6 months.
One thing that no one seems to be aware of is the fact that the founders and studio heads of ArenaNet (The studio that makes GW) were also the ORIGINAL TEAM LEADS FOR WoW; as well as DIABLO & Diablo II; Warcraft III; Starcraft; and Starcraft Broodwars. Not to mention Battle.Net....also the invention of one of the three founders Mike O'Brien; Patrick Wyatt; and Jeff Strain; and soon after James Phinneay (another former Blizzard designer) followed and came onboard and is now Lead Designer.
Believe me Blizzard disciples; I know how great Blizzard was...But these guys were integral parts of the original Blizzard genius game machine; and they left because they wanted to create a different type of MMO; and they put all their skill into GW.
You can see elements of all the previously aforementioned Blizzard games these guys have under their belts in Guild Wars; and they're doing even more in GW2, what with the races and player actions have definite and permanent consequences for themselves and the NPCs in the surrounding environment...supposedly if you ignore a violent herd of centaurs around a fort, for instance; the Centaur population will grow out of control and they will eventually capture and hold/defend the fort; rendering it unusable until player band together and retake the town.
Personally I like that...sorry to be so long winded; but it has always irritated me that no one acknowledges the role ArenaNet's founders played in creating Blizzard's legend; seemingly because they're no longer team players for Blizzard.
Just because it's not synomyous to regular society with MMorpugger; doesn't mean it's an inferior game.
I know 10 former Wowers, including my own 6 month foray into that game; who, after actually playing Guild Wars consistently for about a month; renounced Wow and deleted their accts...especially once they got to the end game four hour; five quest chain elite missions and dungeons. and these were players who illustrated the common epithet: WoW ruined my life; or at least consumed it. They'd quit Wow before for Conan; Warhammer; and other games; but they've converted to Guild Wars, and have been playing for well over a year now.
I would definitely recommend Guild Wars; at least trying the 10 day free trial of all three original campaigns; and also checking out The trailer and interviewx/info about Guild Wars 2, which has now gone into Alpha testing, I believe.

Again, sorry for the length; needed to get that info off my chest and with any luck, into the general gamers' knowledge.

As a player of both games (and i love them both for different reasons) I'd say not really.

If they even advertised it on TV like Blizz did with Lich... they might get a lot more people.

And the comment about WoW graphics sucking? I heard thats because that was it can play over many more OS's... which I think is the biggest let down of Guildwars. Having a mac, I find it tedious to have ti install windows JUST to play Guildwars. Only my opinion though.

"Does Guild Wars 2 have a hope of dismantling the mmo mountain that is Wow? "

Why does WoW have to be dismantled?
Other than the people who stop having a life in the real world...

Does Guild Wars 2 have a hope of dismantling the mmo mountain that is Wow? Most people who played guild wars either loved it or hated it. The level cap was almost non-existent, you couldn't be another race besides human, and dungeons didn't make an appearance until the latest expansion. However, despite those issues, guild wars did a lot of things right. Par example, the focus was centered far more on player skill and creativity, and less on looking like a walking christmas tree. Classes were varied and unique, and the campaigns could be oddly compelling at times. Not to mention a fairly superb pvp, which was sadly constantly dominated by Koreans every year, leaving us Americans in the dust. Guild Wars 2 plans to do all those things and more, fixing old complaints and all the while keeping its free subscription, no monthly fee. I for one have my fingers crossed five times over, but Wow is a tough goliath to compete with. Your thoughts?

My thoughts on this have been plastered all over my aion killing wow post.

In the end i feel that people will still blindly play wow while us smart people indulge ourself in the epic awesomeness that is Aion and Guild wars 2 (there made by the same people)

Humans are creatures of habit.
there also stubborn ass's
they started with WoW and put to much time arguing that its "teh win".
in the end the smart ones will bail and go with NcSoft ;P

I am a Guild Wars player through and through. I've had some dark times though... I used to play Runescape but then Guild Wars rescued me from that but then I discovered WoW and Guild Wars had to come rescue me from that too. I think it is just the best MMO but I highly doubt that it will ever topple WoW and I almost hope it stays that way. I feel that because GW isn't as popular, it is of a higher quality... if that makes sense. Also, like you said, because it is more skill based, there are considerably less 12 year olds who like the play Blood Elf hunter and just generally retard the whole game.

Please...please don't do this to my beloved Guild Wars. It's all I've got left in this world...
