With midnight launches becoming more and more popular, the number of all nighters pulled by gamers is also increasing. I, like many others will be pulling an all nighter tonight for the release of Black Ops 2. What I am interested in knowing is your tips and secrets for staying up all night. Do you drink energy drinks, listen to music, what do you do?

I've had a few naps while watching the cricket today (go Australia!) so I'm hoping that will be enough to get me through the night with a few energy drinks.

Before anyone says "Shouldn't you be going to school?" No, I am on holidays.

[sub][sub][sub]Not the game I'd stay up all night for... <.<[/sub][/sub][/sub]

Anyway, my tips involve staying busy, having loud music in your ears and ignoring the temptation to lie down and close your eyes for one moment and OH GOD IT'S 3PM.

Keep active, try to stay with other people if you can. Get some snacks that you can munch on continuously. One big meal will put you out but continuous snacking will keep you awake.

So healthy I know.

I know CoD isn't everyone's favourite but I enjoy playing with my friends and we have grown up with it.

Don't get bored. I find that as long as I keep my brain occupied, I won't fall asleep, but as soon as I get bored I get really, really tired.

Umm...don't do them.

Seriously. They mess up your sleep cycle, you feel crummy for days afterwards. It gets worse as you get older. I speak from experience. Don't get into the habit now, it'll take years off your life.

I'm on holidays until March, plenty of time to catch up on sleep.

To each their own. I just don't get excited enough over any shooter to stay up all night for it.

Well, to answer your question, first energy drinks are the worst, they will just make you feel hyper, and then you'll crash when the sugar high wears off.

I find caffeine before night time helps me to get through the first half or so (but don't drink it at night since it will have little effect) and then not getting too comfortable when I'm tired. Like don't lie down, try to sit up as straight as possible, and go for walk or do some exercise to get some energy back.

Honestly though, I rarely do all nighters any more. It was fun in high school, "Oooh it's gonna be so fun staying up all night playing video games!" but then I started my dual engineering/music major studies and now a good night is one where I'm asleep before 11.

This is going to make me sound even older than I already do, but......a few years from now you'll realize you've got it all wrong, you've been hurting yourself, and it's time to get your head on straight.

Don't mess up your rhythms. If you don't have rhythms, develop some.

Work an odd shift where you get off at 4 AM anyway? It's 12 AM here and I am not going to bed for 5 hours. That's how I do it.

People still go to midnight releases?

Rookie move :D

I order my games online and I generally get them a day before the release date.

Keep drinking and dancing and singing.
Or I read a book. But it has to be a easy to read and entertaining book.

Having stayed up so many nights, now I simply don't have to do anything at all, apart from not lying down on bed and trying to sleep.

You need some of this stuff: http://www.funraniumlabs.com/the-black-blood-of-the-earth/
It has 40 times the caffeine content of normal coffee. FORTY TIMES.

I tend to pull all-nighters using willpower alone, but that's mostly when I'm doing homework and whatnot. When I'm playing video games or anything similar, I just keep lights on around me and generally whatever I'm doing keeps my thought process going, so I usually do okay with just that. However, I don't tend to push for an all-nighter unless I am really engaged in something or really need to get stuff done, so it only happens on occasion.

In my case, if I'm not trying to fall asleep, I can even lay in bed and read, surf the web, watch TV, or what have you without danger of dozing off. It's been months since I've pulled an actual all nighter (most recent one I can think of was for a LAN party back in June or July, or if going to bed at 7 AM counts, for a paper I wrote back in September), but I'm up until 4 or 5 AM on a fairly regular basis, mostly because I'm just too busy surfing the web (or on Saturdays, watching Toonami) to notice that I'm exhausted.

Not that this is a daily thing for me, it's more like weekly, with occasional bouts of doing it more than once in a week. If I had a DVR to record Toonami for me, I'd probably only be staying up that late a couple of times a month, and even then I'd be getting a good night's sleep, just shifted forward a few hours.
