This post is pretty much aimed at the escapists who for some reason or another use firearms regularly. Be that hunting, skeet, competions, or just owning and doing it for the hell of it. I myself love skeet shooting, and in general I enjoy practicing my aim.

Due to the fact that Ive gotten used to firearms during the early stages of my life, theyre really nothing special to me. That is, I really dont react to them that much. (Dont get me wrong, Im as far from gun crazy you can get. And I agree on strict regulations regarding who should be allowed to own a firearm.)

So this got me thinking,

How have your experiences with firearms affected you firing a gun in a video game? Is there anything you react to?

Personally, I feel I have a lot of respect for firearms, and try treat them with respect. (Granted, that can be hard to do in a game where youre expected to shoot huge smurfs with crossbows..) This also means no spraying and praying, but carefully lined up shots and that I try to take my time.

FOR ALL OF YOU WHO HAVE NEVER FIRED A GUN BUT ENJOY DOING SO IN VIDEOGAMES:

Your views on this? Is there anyone here who instantly react to guns with "WOOOOOOOAH AWESOME"?

Just comment on real firearms vs. guns in videogames, if you please. Im really looking forward to reading what you have to say.

I have a stone wall by my house that I usually set up targets to shoot. I mainly do it just for fun. And it is fun.

As for how it effected my game experience, I find myself anticipating the recoil a bit more, but not much else. Oh, and I tend to wait until most of my magazine is empty before I reload, instead of the usual "fire one bullet then reload your M16" or whatever gun your using.

I've fired a hunting rifle. It was.. wow. Loud as all hell, and made for a pretty hard impact in my 14-year old shoulder. Though, I'd like to learn how to use a rifle or sidearm, so I get familiar with them, and absolutely terrified with the notion that I'd use it to kill someone.

Shooting guns in real life is way different to me in video games. Reality, take my time, line up shots, make sure I hit the target as well as possible. video games, if need be, spray and pray. Example, CoD4, I knew someone was behind a wall, just not where exactly. Solution? Spray the wall.

Shooting guns in real life annoyed me... the way we were 'supposed' to fire the gun meant it kept jamming.

(We were meant to cock it overarm, I could cock it underarm no problem, but if I tried overarm it would jam half the time)

It hasn't really changed how I feel about firing them in games... they've always been two completely separate concepts to me.

Ive fired a gun a few times. I live in the country and My dad has about 6. Mostly at targets though. also rabbits. I have a respect for guns in real life, but not video game guns. If i cant feel it, it doesnt worry me

They havnt. Firing guns in real life is so different from doing it in games that I just treat them both as entirely different, yet both equally fun, passtimes.

I beleive that people should be educated about guns before buying one, and whilst I'm a self confesed gun nut, I agree with the tight gun laws that my country (UK) has. They're for the best. So I guess I'm the same as you in that I have a respect for guns.

I mainly shoot clays with my 12 Bore shotgun, but hopefully this season I might get a place on a pheasant shoot or 2, which would be great :D

Mine's the top one, though both guns are very similar :p

In games I tend to react to technical details of guns that devs have or havnt got right, or have missed out on entirely. I used to really rage about how short ranged shotguns were in many games, but I've got over myself now and have accepted that such limitations are neccessary for balance :p

EDIT: I managed to forget my major pet hate when it comes to guns in games; sound.

More often than not, guns in games sound like fuckin airsoft guns. Real guns are loud. Really damn loud.

Closest thing to a gun I'll ever get in the UK.
nahh, real guns are legal here matey, see above :)

As long as you've got a license and dont want a handgun or semi-auto rifle, you can get what you want :)

Lack of recoil, inaccurate ballistic models and damage models are increasingly annoying.
Granted, I'm not excepting realistic gun simulators when I play stupid/goofy games, but when games market themselves as "realistic" shooters... I find it esp grating when games are built up around guns with identical ammunition, but deal completely different damage.

Shooting guns is fun. Would make a good hobby if it wasn't so expensive.

I don't find games messing me up on my accuracy and whatnot however, they're very very different.

I spend a lot of time aiming (and missing) in reality. However in a game, I stick to the usual tactic of spraying the wall with bullets and hoping my target is one of the things that dies along the way.

Paintball gun is all i've fired.

Never owned a real gun. I've fired both shotguns and assault rifles though. Skeet was funnier than shooting an AR at a fixed target some 100 meters away, it was almost like point-and-click.

I own a few airsoft guns though (yes, I'm one of those airsoft players you may have heard about) and it wasn't until I started playing I realized how ridiculous most shooter games are. Bunny jumpers get a lot of hate, but strafing is just as bad. Trying to fire while strafing in a forest is a good way to brake your legs.

And don't get me started on the death traps that are otherwise known as "stairwells".

I have shot a BB Gun, a Shotgun altered to shoot corks, and a machine gun altered to shoot BB's, first one in scout camp, last 2 both at the county fair. and I'm a damn good shot (shot the head off a toy army soldier that was on the back row).

I fired an Israeli made Desert Eagle once. Not that great actually. If I was using one in a game I would want proper eye and ear protection.

I was in the Royal Air Force Cadet Force until recently, and we'd fire a semi automatic version of the standard issue British Armed Forces rifle.

Having a suppressed bolt action, rimfire .32 rifle, I hate silencers on games. The James Bond-style screw-on-and-quiet-fire type, Does. Not. Exist. =_=
