During my brief time in the army, and the bootcamp that pre-ceded that, I did fire a few guns. Hasn't really changed my opinion of them, and certainly hasn't changed the way I use them in games. Well, okay, I AM a little less likely to fire a fun next to an ally's ear, as I can't imagine that NOT causing them horrible pain.

Guns in video games are just like cars in video games. I play to spray the whole clip and crash at 120mph into a wall without dying.

When I shoot and drive in real life they are serious things that take time and consideration for my safety and the safety of people around me.

On another note, I like how in MW2 you can pop off all 6 rounds on the .44 magnum in like 1 second. I have fired one in real life and trust me, you need at least a few seconds between shots to steady yourself and say "Holy crap!" When you shoot it your entire field of vision is filled with muzzle flare and the kick is a good 6" with a solid stance. It's a true hand cannon.

I'm a keen airsofter (which I know is nothing like using a real firearm etc, so dont bring that up), and I take it fairly seriously in terms of skills, tactics and fieldcraft. I'm also quite a big fan of Magpul Dynamics training material. I do often find myself playing an FPS similarly to how I airsoft. Broadly, I tend to fire in short bursts with automatic weapons, and fire semi-autos, especially pistols, in a controlled manner. I noticed the other day playing Killing Floor that I fire the M9 with the mouse in a similar way that I would pull a trigger. That is, allowing it to reset, and *just* bringing my finger off before pressing back down firmly. I dont know if that is a little bit of imagination creeping in, but unless the sh*t really hits the fan, I dont mash the fire button and always aquire the target with the front sight before opening fire. I also go for body shots rather than headshots at most ranges. Obviously I'm leaning towards headshots more in KF because of the style of the game, but I still consider a body hit better than a miss, so aim for the body instinctively.

In multiplayer games (specifically MW2 lately) I try to change my stance, or position to give myself the upperhand, on the grounds (Magpul Dynamics) that action is quicker than reaction. Kneeling or dropping prone not only helps with accuracy, but forces an attacker to react to the new situation.

More broadly again, I almost never fire from the hip in a game. I wouldn't do it in real life due to the liability attatched with the damage an unaimed shot can do.

As far as using a real gun goes, I have no interest in being shot at whatsoever. I would however be very interested in doing target shooting and similar if it wasn't for the fact I live in the UK. I've given some thought to clay pigeon shooting, but it's really not the same. The closest I have come to a real gun is a blank firing pistol, so know a little of how much impact recoil and sound level would differ from what you see in games. I'm pretty sure you couldn't talk during a gunfight :p

I've fired a UMP .40 (or was it .45?), Glock 18, MP5 and a WWI Trench Gun w/ bayonet mount at Knob Creek, Kentucky. The Glock recoiled like crazy and the Trench Gun was painful & difficult to shoot after a while. But overall, I think I did well considering I never fired a weapon until that point in time.

But damn, Knob Creek is one crazy ass place. Thanks to that place, I'm even happier that I live in New York. But it was a fun & memorable experience none the less. (there's nothing like standing behind two Mini Guns as they're going off at the same time)

I fired guns for the first time a few months ago. It was quite fun.

But the belief that some people have that "Video games train people how to use guns" is complete bs. I didn't due terrible for my first time, but video games never gave me any "training" for it.

My experience with guns has probably negatively impacted on how i play active shooters like COD.
I used to be an Army Cadet and when we used rifles it was more, run, drop down and then ready, aim, fire. You try doing this is COD and garuntee you will be shot before you've had a chance to fire.
Also it's a lot harder to aim with a gun on a game than it is in real life. would be good if it was about the same, then i may get a few more kills =P

PS: portal was fun, i liked portal.

What awnser is expected? Like I don't point a gun at other characters unless I'm ready to shoot. I think the bigger change in personality would be - how does one feel about killing people in games after you've killed somebody in real life. Would a player hesitate or have a flashback etc.?

Hahaha, firing a gun in real life is completely different from firing a gun in a video game.

This post is pretty much aimed at the escapists who for some reason or another use firearms regularly.
Sorry, I couldn't help it. Puns are funny okay...

I'm afraid that all I have fired is pellet guns and that was 2 and a half years ago, but it was a hell of a lot more fun shooting a can in RL than a Russian/ nazi/ terrorist in a game.

Having a suppressed bolt action, rimfire .32 rifle, I hate silencers on games. The James Bond-style screw-on-and-quiet-fire type, Does. Not. Exist. =_=
Have you ever heard a MP5 with suppressor, all you hear is clicks. Pretty quiet.

The largest firearm I've ever fired was with my Uncle's 22, hunting gophers on the farm. You know, the Saskatchewan pastime XD

I own an air-rifle but that is it. At some point I want to get my firearms safety certificate or whatever and go hunting with my Uncle. I like the idea of going out and killing my future meal instead of meekly going to the store to purchase someone's hard work.

I've got a single action .22 rifle and I love taking it out to the creek and shooting bottles with it. Sure more often than not I miss but when I score a hit and hear the glass shattering nothing really compares to it

My experience with firing guns: Loud as hell, and the guns are alot heavier than I expected from playing so many video games :3

Well, i dont see a reason to fire a gun. Well it might be fun. But, well nope, i have no really need to get a weapon and shoot around. I like Bows though. Its quiter, calmer, Archery is a good way to relax.
Its kind of like saying, yeah a dog is a nice pet, but a real pack of wolves are soo much cooler and manly *gruntgrunt* well yeah it can accidently get ugly but damn i dont care.
A private person has no reason to own a gun and shouldnt be allowed to.

I know that Bow and Arrow have proven to be a very deadly weapon aswell (for like , thousands of years now ;) ) but, damn i always had my double moral and i keep it.

..I don't understand why hunting can't be done with a bow.
Sure it can, a lot of people do it. But the standard is still firearms, for a few reasons..

Efficiency. While still difficult, hunting with firearms is a lot easier than using crossbows or bows.

Mercy. A well placed bullet kills the animal instantly, or atleast with minimum pain, while it's difficult for an archer to both place an arrow in an equally deadly spot on the animal, or kill it as quickly.

Money. Bowhunting takes more time, and so the meat will be more expensive.

..I see your point though, "I don't believe there is any reason for anyone outside of military or law enforcement that has a legitimate reason to own a gun"

I agree with that, it's VERY hard to determine who should be allowed to own firearms and who shouldnt.
...I won't argue mercy, I believe that a gun would probably be faster, but knowing all of the people I've met that hunt... mercy is never on their minds. Ever.
Every hunter I've met has been an utter **** without exeption.
I understand this doesn't apply to all hunters, I'm also aware that in the US it's a bigger past time more assosiated with camping, fishing, hiking or what have you. That's just not the case with the people I've met in Australia.

I don't know what you mean by the meat being expensive, but here, the cost of gun ownership is so large it would offset any costs of owning a bow many times over.
You misunderstood me, I said HUNTING with a bow, not just simply firing a bow at targets. With a rifle, the whole process is a lot easier, but with a bow, well, first of all you have to be a lot closer to your prey, and you have to have the wind on your side (a heck of a lot more than you have to with a rifle) for example.

Aye, that's a shame. We, as animals, should respect our prey. A dead animal is not just some trophy. I didnt actually realize that most hunters nowadays do not think the way we do here. Stupid me.

Meat, as in hunting for food. That is the only proper hunting, in my personal opinion. And a lot of hunters sell their meat, or so I am informed. Whenever I have gone hunting, it's for our own family, and if this is the case with you too, I can see how you got confused. I apologize for that.

It's a real shame people hunt animals just for fun, just to kill something. I dont see the point in shooting a deer, if Im not going to eat it. (alright, with some animals it may be to thin out numbers, but still.)

Firing a gun in video games has absolutely NOTHING to do with firing guns in real life.

If you've really fired a gun OP, I'm not sure why you're asking such a question. Leave this crap to the politicians and news reporters.

In some places, hunting is far more practical than for trophies or food.

Pennsylvania, for example NEEDS hunters to kill deer, as they're population often rises too high, and they become extremely large pest and traffic hazards. I can recall at least twice when hunting seasons and bag limits have been raised just to cut more of the population off.

I personally own a Marlin 336 and a Mosin Nagant made in 1943. I take them to the range every week or so. I've fired a Glock 19, Sig p226, .38 special, .357 magnum, SKS, and AK47 regularly though. I love firearms and enjoy using and maintaining them.

Well, when I actually started firing guns, I was also maintaining them. So I found myself looking at the working parts and (I really do hate to use this example) but when I saw the ACR's charging handle at the top of the gun, near the butt on MW2, it made me think it was a great idea. (I've heard the M4 has a similar charging handle?)

Also made me take another look at the sound of it. Pistols sounding like cap guns are just plain wrong. I fired a 7.62 rifle, and the boom was incredible.
I think you might be a little confused. The charging handle on the ACR is located forward on the rifle, a design feature common in a number of European weapons. The charging handle on the M16/M4 system is located at the rear of the weapon at the base of what is often the carrying handle.

Personally, I've had a number of years of experience with a lot of weapons of different calibers and ages. I've shot a lot and have shot practicaly for only a little while. Have only minor training with team shooting and other such craft. Soon to an 11B.
