My brother and I normally set up some targets and take turns knocking them over. Do I feel that I am a better FPS player because of it? Not at all because they are they two completely different skills.

I have always wanted to try skeet shooting however. I like to think I am good at aiming but I have never really shot a moving target before.

It makes games like ARMA II playable. Since I've used firearms extensively IRL (as a civilian), I have a hell of an appreciation for realistic weapon physics and handling, which makes sims a blast.

There is no corrolation between real life guns and videogame guns. The 2 are completely seperate practices and one can not be applied to the other.

At least that's my experiance anyway.

My wife is the big hunter (she and her dad regularly draw for Elk Season out here in NM) but I mostly enjoy target practice, especially with pistols, with which I am alarmingly accurate, I discovered (had mostly practiced with rifles or bow and arrow until my father in law let me gain access to his sidearm collection). She loves games that allow for a sniper focus; as in real life, so in games, I guess....!

As much as I love shooters, I amostly annoyed with the aim mechanic doesn't jive well with reality; although I know there should be kick-back when firing, it's pretty difficult to simulate that in a game in an accurate fashion; one has to presume that the big over-muscled marines representative in most shooters have massive biceps for a reason: keeping control of the weapons they are firing!

I've fired a hunting rifle. It was.. wow. Loud as all hell, and made for a pretty hard impact in my 14-year old shoulder. Though, I'd like to learn how to use a rifle or sidearm, so I get familiar with them, and absolutely terrified with the notion that I'd use it to kill someone.
Do you feel that way when you get behind the wheel of a car? It's pretty much the same thing, a car and a weapon are just tools, how you use that tool is how you should "feel" about it.

Personally I find fire arms a great way to relieve stress and to relax. As far as what how I relate it to video games, I pretty much don't anymore, games have horrible bullet mechanics, 7.62 should put you on your rear end on the first shot.

The only gun ive fired is a 12 guage shotgun. And it made me realise how unrealistic guns are in the sense that they are incrediably defaning.

Shooting guns is fun. Would make a good hobby if it wasn't so expensive.
Are you talking about real life or video game guns?

/joke (because VGs and guns are both expensive)

I really only have fired a real gun (not a bb gun) once in my life, and that was when I was only knee high to a grasshopper. My dad had a handgun and (maybe) a shotgun. One time, he took us out to the woods and under heavy supervision he had us fire the gun a couple rounds. How he supervised my sister and me, I don't remember. but he didn't just let us go wild and shoot anything we want. He is a better father than that.

No car: no license. And while I understand your point: And I can't really understand how it can be relaxing to use weapons (of course, I've never done it more than once, so maybe I'm missing something), but guns, unlike vehicles are designed for one purpose: kill a living object at the business end of the barrel: it also has the very handy deterrent effect on potential attackers.

Car -can- be used to kill, but their are mainly designed to transport freight or passengers. the comparison is invalid in my eyes, but your point is taken.

I was shooting guns (Colt 1911, sports 9mm and M98 rifle) regularly at the range when i was 16-18, not anymore, no close by ranges available, also my license doesn't work here (not american, so no automatic weapons).

In games i do recognize if a gun doesn't "feel right" from handling and sound effects.

But since i never fired a full auto rifle or a machinegun id like to know how game weapons hold up to it. For example the SAW in Battlefield 2 always seemed like it has an unrealistic spray, while the PKM seemed to be way too accurate (up to sniping people with it).

Just as a quick little bit of info, regardless of whether you want it or not.

Muscles or the lack thereof have very little to do with recoil control. The human body is unable to send a signal fast enough to tell the muscles to compensate for the recoil of the weapon. Recoil control is all about how the weapon is held.

Anyone ever gone and had a very trustworthy friend fire a supersonic round past their head, just to hear what it sounds like?

And I have shot something really very tiny and hunting-ish, so I can post here.

Fired an SA-80, LSW (light support weapon)and a .22 rifle.
Ahh the long silly weapon, learnt to shoot on one of those (as an OTC unit we didnt have enough SA80s for the LSW men in the platoons to use one, so we had to do it all on the LSWs).

Then joined the unit shooting team, and was granted a brand new SA80A2 (lsw was a knackered old A1). Hated firing it blank, as took at least three times as long to clean.

I fired a 9mm, a .22, and a .45 handgun a couple years ago when I was in the Philippines. I forget the names. The .45 was an M1911, I think, and one of the other ones was a SIG Saur. I could handle the lower ones but I almost dropped the .45 because of the recoil.

In videogames, I'm always looking to see if a made-up gun could work. Having no knowledge of guns myself, I'd like to think that developers do.

Edit:

I also tend to mutter quite a bit about reloading. Again CSS provides a good example. Reloading the AK47 in CSS involves removing old mag --> inserting new one --> shooting. sorry but that shit don't work with a weapon that fires from a closed bolt. The M16 fared even worse, the game pulls the forward assist when you should be using the charging handle. Then there's things like the Mac 10, where you can simply remove the old mag, insert a new one and expect it to fire. That weapon fires from an open bolt, so unless you tried to fire it after it ran out the bolt will be in the open position ready to fire when the new mag is inserted.
I agree, even with my knowledge of guns being they are shiny things that shoot bullet, I can still tell that something must be wrong with reloads in CSS.
On a side note, have you played TF2? How do you feel about the Scout's pistol-flip reload and the magic scattergun that does not require shells? ;)
