Wait, overarm? Hang on...

*tries to imagine cocking overarm*

Wait, I can't see what you mean by that.

EDIT: I have held an Accuracy International Rifle before (British standard sniper rifle, was bloody heavy), but obviously didn't fire it.
Imagine you're gripping the lever, palm facing down, elbow above the height of your hand, so you have to pull with the triceps.

Under arm is gripping the lever, palm facing up, elbow below the height of your hand, meaning you pull with your biceps.
What weapon? Are we looking at the original L98's long cocking handle, the rather contorted cocking action used with an L85/L86, a conventional bolt-action like the SMLE or something else entirely?

If you've got a Rifle .22 Nº 8 in your hands, you can open the bolt with the back of your thumb and catch the ejected casing for bonus style points, but I don't recommend catching fresh brass from anything bigger as it tends to hold more heat.

The L85 cadet rifle.

It's hard to explain without demonstrating how I cocked it.

Rather than doing interpretative dance to reach over the cheek-piece and down the side while the weapon's tilted to the right, you reached across under your right forearm to come at the cocking handle from below?

I can't see why that'd be a problem, either.

What you've shown there is an L98A1, though, isn't it? The L85A1 has a stubby cylinder sticking out of the bolt carrier where the back end of the long black arm of that thing's cocking handle is, and is cocked left-handed. That thing's cocked right-handed using a handle a lot further forwards, in front of the breech rather than behind it.

I think the reason they want you to cock it overarm is that you're supposed to take the handle all the way back and then keep your hand moving backwards so your fingers roll off the handle, much like the draw and loose action used with a traditional bow. If you pull it back underarm, you're likely to ride the handle forwards and sometimes it doesn't go all the way if it's impeded. Even when it's clean, you can rest it just before the end of its travel. If you've just fired a magazine of blanks at the Sergeant's Course, you're likely to have to shove the bolt the last quarter of the way forwards through all the soot.

All those saying Shotgun recoil can break your arm, thats only if you're and idiot and don't know how to hold one. I fired a 12 gauge double barrel shotgun a couple times when I was ten. TEN and all I got where a few light bruises. So unless you're doing yoga while firing the bloody thing then you're probably not going to break anything.

I shot at some cans with a rifle once at camp. Can't say it's changed the way I play my video games.
