I get the impression that there is alot of negativity in regards to gaming, but then again this is the internet, and thease are forums so perhaps thats to be expected plus we all know its much more satisfying to rant about things we hate

I really like ZP and I think its hilarious but somtimes I get sick of people being so negative about everything, and I'm not singling out ZP here I'm not blaming anyone or anything I'm just wondering dose anyone generally try and feel posative about things? or are we all cynical here?

like I said negativity is funny thats been obvious for a long time

People say things they don't like suck to give importance to the things they do like and by association themselves that like those things that according to them do not suck.

It's a circular and stupid thing but it works sometimes.

Have to agree, it seems to be cool to hate. You see the xbox vs PS3 fanboys ranting (am I the only one to think they are both good and theres plenty of room in the market place for both?), you see corporation hate (people rant against Microsoft, EA and others often simply cos they are big corporates, very little thought seems to go into it), movie hate, government hate etc. Seems theres someone willing to complain about everything.

I saw on one forum a discussion about UFC 2010 not selling as well as the 2009 edition. One person said "EA do it again, push out a half arse update and charge full price", and sure EA sports were famous for their annual sporting releases, but those were often great games that were released at reduced rates, while the UFC game isn't even one of theirs. They are just the big easy target but like any big group you can't stereotype everything they do.

Or the discussion on the new Spiderman reboot movie. Tons of posts just saying "it'll be crap" before the first trailer for it is out. Sure it might end up being bad, but shouldn't we see what they come up with before bagging it? Seems to be a negative outlook from the start, they aren't looking to be surprised, they just want to be able to say "told you so", I reckon they'd actually be disappointed if it turned out to be a good movie.

Sometimes it's easier to be negative about a game/movie untill it proves itself to be positive. That way you won't get let down too hard.

Plus, it's human nature to focus on the bad stuff. Why do you think we have the News?

Heh, you haven't been in many fandoms, I take it? Nobody is ever more critical of something than its fans. This is normal. People are invested in gaming here. That means any minor infraction, like say the alteration of elements of gameplay or making a game that Person X doesn't like feels way more serious to them than it probably should, and why they feel provoked to rant about inconsequential things. I'm totally not above having done this, either. None of us are, I'd bet. We get passionate about games because we care about them.

Basically, it's just something you need to let people get out of their systems. The important thing is that you don't let their negativity get to you, or ruin your enjoyment of something you're excited about.

Yeah, that's a reason I don't like ZP anymore. I thought Croshaw was a guy who couldn't enjoy a game to save his life. But then he said that he'll tell us about games he liked (Prince or Persia and Silent Hill 2) and he still bashed them for no good reason.
And lately he's trying to be offensive just to be offensive strictly IMHO.

Any review of ZP follows the pattern "say shit about the game and at the end say what you really think", but lately he just omits the last part. And I realize that it's his style to be an evil basterd, but hey, the AVGN does that better and funnier.

OK... Got a little of topic there.

Negativity... I don't like it. Being cynical a-la Doctor House is funny when everybody else is a happy elf. But in our "Dark and Gritty" times it's no longer original.

Shirokurou's life lesson: Be positive.

I think the reason why people who play games can be so negative is because they put a lot more of their experience into playing a game, than watching a movie or listening to music. That's why you don't see movie forums blowing up as much as gaming sections.

How dare you make fun of the 20 hours I spent on this game?! I had fun, so fuck you! I spent $60, damn it if I won't force myself a good time!

I think there are a couple of reasons that you see so much negativity, but probably the most important is that negative experiences are simply more immediately noticeable. When you're playing a game and immersion is broken, you notice immediately. If you stay immersed, you don't really notice (almost by definition). Maybe after you're done playing you will look back and think: I had fun. It's the same with making plans: the best possible outcome is that everything goes exactly the way you thought it would (which is not very remarkable unless you really stop and think about it). If you're doing something that is really nice, are you going to interrupt that by thinking: "Gosh, this is nice"? Probably not. But if something sucks you are most definitely going to notice.

Another reason might be that nothing is perfect and tastes differ in a way that often a certain thing is not liked by the majority of people. This means that when you say you like something, you are a) probably part of a minority, and b) vulnerable to attacks on the thing you like, and often by extension yourself (how can you like that piece of shit?).

And yeah, being negative about something beforehand can save you from some disappointment, and for some reason it is often considered cool to bash things and gay to praise them.

I'd say it really depends on which "Community" you are visiting at the time. Some are very mature people with a positive contribution to most topics on hand. Then you get "those" communities where the rule of the day is to yell into a mic at strangers about how much of an idiot they are. If they aren't happy with what's happened then they can and most likely will ruin everyone's time by just being an ass about everything whilst ruining a game/match. I think that if you are around it long enough it rubs off on you at times which may explain why you might see so much of it (even I'm guilty of this).

But in life you will always find people who are like that, anyone who's worked a retail job in particular knows exactly what i am talking about. There are just people out there who have a 'need' to negative, whether they are venting after a bad week or whether that's the way the are. The best way to go with it is to take it like a grain of salt, if you bite then its only going to leave a bitter taste in your mouth.

to be fair though the amount of games that guy has to play..you would eventually become so "meh" with the usual stuff that most of us like, and it takes somthing truly different to get your attention also Its for entertainment value so I don't really mind that much

Yeah, the curmudgeony gamer bit, it's kind of getting old.

I for one love video games and gaming. I may ***** about a few things in games, but generally, if I don't like a game I don't play it. I won't force myself to play something dreadful to the end just to complain about it.

Just finishing up Sly 2. Loved it.

Gaming is a solitary activity. People with no social skills can still be gamers. People who are generally negative about things usually have no social skills so there's a good chance they end up gamers. Not all that surprising.

Gamers tend to be the most spoiled, self-entitled, nitpicky, "really, are you four years old?" consumers in any industry. One dropped frame, muddy texture, or (gods forbid in a complex computer program!) bug, and everyone's like "zomg this game sucks!"

Maybe because I'm not particularly spoiled, self-entitled, nitpicky, or four years old, but I tend to find even flawed games fun because I enjoy what the developers did right (buying New Vegas at release and calling it my Game of the Year going away even before the 1.2 patch ought to tell you something about how tolerant I am of glitches.)

A game has to really fuck up royally before I'll hold the bugs against it (Hearts of Iron 3, I'm looking at you.)

He disliked the "new" PoP. He loved the old ones.
And you've given 2 contrasting opinions. You agree that negativity is bad, but you enjoy it if it's negativity towards everything?

Because a forum is treated like a spoken conversation, while it is written. And a written word feels much stronger. Also people tend to exaggerate on the internet.

I plan on it. I need something to complain about, otherwise it will just seem like I am a Sly fan girl.

I agree completely.

Take Bioshock for example, the combat in that game was clunky as hell and aiming was a joke when it came to plasmids, but the story, atmosphere, setting, music and pretty much everything else about it more than made up for it and it's one of my favourite games of all times.

I kind of agree, he definitely does play up the faults, but the thing is that he isn't a game reviewer, he is more of a comedian that rants about games. My only ire towards his videos is related to the hypocrisy to be honest; where he slags off one game for something but doesn't slag off another for the exact same thing.
