Thief invented and perfected the stealth genre.

Anyone who says it isn't their favourite stealth game, hasn't played it.
Eh, I played it all the way through (the first one. Never tried Metal Age). Don't get me wrong, the game is great, the stealth system awesome... but I didn't like the setting much, and I just didn't enjoy the waiting for guards to tread on. Still had fun with it, but I had more fun with Deus Ex.

Deus Ex is the greatest game in existence. It just works on every level.

But I wouldn't say the stealth is better in Deus Ex than it is in Thief.

Do give Thief II a try, it is a better, more distilled version of the first game.

I honestly haven't played many stealth games, but the game that reminds me of stealth being fun and not insanely balls hard is Batman: Arkham Asylum. There's something satisfying about walking behind the last thug in a room until he has noticed you, which you then incapacitate him right in front of his unconscious friends. >:)

Thief 2: The Metal Age

Amazing atmosphere, excellent story, memorable protagonist, and extremely solid gameplay mechanics make it the best stealth game out there.
Couldn't have said it better. I'm actually inclined to say that for what it is it's perfect.

I prefer the Splinter Cell games myself. There's something special about Michael Ironside saying something generally witty after snapping someone's neck. Sam Fisher has the best goggles ever.

Arkham Asylum, I love stringing up a roomful of enemies with everyone in a panic. They know I'm there, they know The Bat will get them.

Thief 2: the metal age. Best pure stealth game ever made, no exceptions. The art direction is wonderful, the voice acting good (great for it's time, and Garett and Victoria are still awesome) the world building is understated but utterly effective, the Antagonist is delicious, the mechanics are pure stealth without any of this 'oh woops I got caught, oh well, now it's just an action game!' nonsense that sours assassins creed (and to a lesser extent, Hitman - don't get me wrong, both excellent games that I love, but neither of them are really stealth games. Ones a parkour action game and the other is a puzzle game with guns.)

Yeah. Thief 2, because we praise the Master Builder for His Judgements.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory.

I know Thief 2 is the favourite, and I did like it, but I find the gameplay in Chaos Theory to be so much more satisfying and visceral. Also, Sam Fisher is voiced by Michael Ironside, and he has one of the awesomest voices of all time.

I suppose it's something to do with the fact that I'd rather stealth kill everyone in a game than sneak past them unnoticed. I love the stealth, I just enjoy it more when combined with violence.

I agree. Most other "stealth" games allow/force us to just murder everything and everyone who might be a bother.. not so much in Thief. So skill, discretion and patience really matters.

TBH, thanks to Thief, I measure the base quality of a stealth title in it's ability to be played through without having to kill, maim, or injure a single foe (human or not).

Sadly - the Thief titles are still the only ones I've found where this is possible.
iirc, its possible to do so in deus ex(a nonlethal run), but it is very hard and require abusing some flaws of the game to pull off.
