Seriously. Just stop what you are doing, and go buy Alpha Protocol. It's a great game. Sure, it might be a little rough around the edges, but once you can get past that, you will be rewarded. It has a lush and incredibly dialogue system: each conversation is interesting, deep, and complex. If you want to see how conversations are done in games, then go play it. It's also one of the very few games that actually DELIVERS on the promise that "every action has a consequence," since the game will change radically depending on how you treat characters and behave in missions (it can tell if you are a stealthy or guns blazing person :O). Just remember that it's NOT a shooter with RPG elements, but an actual RPG. You do have to increase your skill in weapons if you want to use them. You can't just magically equip a pistol and headshot everyone.

I mean, what's the worst that can happen? You don't like it? It's only 2 dollars! What ELSE can you buy with 2 dollars!? Maybe a coke?

I'll take the coke, I like coke, coke's pretty good. Or 2 dollars can buy me two peace teas, or a snack.

My point? No, I wont be buying it.

almost made a thread for this exact reason

thank god someone else knows the beauty that is that game. It has the OCCASIONAL slight glitch that does next to nothing, otherwise it's a fucking amazing game with true choose your own path adventure that actually has good consequences.

it is easily worth 30-40 bucks still, 2 dollars is a fucking. steal.

It's a very underrated game. It's a real favorite in threads like "What games get more hate than they deserved". Every time in those threads, almost assuredly, there is one person who always says "Oh, I hear this a lot about Alpha Protocol. I will get it when I see it on sale".

Well, this is just a PSA for those people who always say they will get Alpha Protocol when they see it on sale :). Seriously, just go buy it. If you are an RPG guy (or gal), then you won't regret it! At that 2 bucks, it's a total steal!

Your loss man. You're seriously missing a hell of an RPG.

Already played it. Not a fan, to put it mildly.

Granted, at two dollars it could hardly be called a waste of money, but it's still a waste of time.

At least if I buy a coke, the Coca Cola company can't decide they don't like something nasty I posted on a forum and take it back.

I already bought AvP with money I should probably desperately try to save until my Student loan comes through.
I'm a bad, bad boy.

$2? It cost me 3 USD at my location when I saw the sale earlier this morning. I feel so ripped off (not serious).

I've noticed in the past that some people around here think it's a pretty good game, so I figured at that price I might as well find out if I like it too.

I'd HARDLY call it a waste of time. It has one of the absolute best conversation systems I've seen in video games, and it has a legitimately gripping "moral choice" system. There were more than enough times during my first play through where I had a hard time picking what to do.

One of my favorite instances of the moral choice is when you are in Taipai. You can only save evidence about either an assassination plot against the president of Taiwan, or the plans to start a massive riot that has the potential to kill many people, and injure many more. It's a really powerful scene, since it IS really hard to decide what to do, since each have their own pros and cons. It works especially well since the game never demonizes you for your decision: there isn't a "right" or a "wrong"... just grey areas and ambiguity: a perfect parallel to the dark, gritty world of international espionage.

There are a lot of great ideas in Alpha Protocol. Great ideas are never a waste of time. It's a game I really have no problem standing up for, since I do see the beautiful diamond underneath the uncut gem. It did a lot of things right, and it took a lot of risks. Doesn't that ambition at least warrant a little appreciation?

I could go on for a bit about Alpha Protocol. I'll happily contend that it is worth well over 2 dollars, and it should be a title EVERYONE, especially RPG lovers, should pick up for such a low price. Even if you don't like it, it's not like you are out of a lot of money.

EDIT: It's fine if you've actually played it and didn't like it, but there's no reason to try and convince people not to buy it. It's a bit of a cult title: it has people who really, really love it. And there's only one way to find out if you happen to be one of those people who really, really love AP: play it. It's at such a great price this weekend to where you can afford to take that risk. And if you hate on it because Yahtzee did or some shit like that, when in reality you've never played it, then you should forgo that coke and give it a try too :)

DON'T DO IT!

Alpha Protocol = shittier Deus Ex Human Revolution.

I got it for my PS3 for $20, good game but the boss fights are just unfair.
Basically this. Back when it came out you could make a case for AP as one of the better FPS/RPG games in the Deus Ex mold but now that DE3 is out it doesn't make a great case for itself. Its not a terrible game but it has some definite wonkiness that really holds it back. It still might be worth a play and for $2 you could do a lot worse, it has some neat ideas (also the hacking minigame is really good) and the kind of solid writing and moral ambiguity that we've come to expect from Obsidian but its hard to make a case for it with DE3 out which eclipses it pretty heavily.

Best reason not to buy it.

A lot of people say it's a hidden, flawed gem, but I honestly couldn't get past the first two levels because the hacking/lockpicking minigames were so brutal. No way to adjust their difficulty, and the skill which made them easier had very little effect. It's worth keeping that in mind if you're going to purchase the game.

It is only $2, but still..
