I really like all kinds of RPG, so instead of dividing by type loke CoLOsS did, I'll choose my favorites by system.

NES: Dragon Warrior IV
SNES: Chrono Trigger
N64: LoZ - Ocarina of Time
Gamecube: Skies of Arcadia
Wii: LoZ - Skyward Sword

Playstation: Final Fantasy IX
PS2: Okami

XBOX: Jade Empire
XBOX 360: Batman - Arkham City

Sega Genesis: Phantasy Star IV

Gameboy Color: Pokémon Crystal
Gameboy Advance: Pokémon Emerald
DS: Pokémon Black/White (I'm sensing a trend here...)

Without categorizing much, I'd vote for Morrowind.

It is superb, even today. It has aged well, with all the mods and support from the community.

In a close second place, I'd put Baldur's Gate 2, Planescape and Fallout 1.

Baldur's Gate Trilogy
Trilogy? Did I miss something? Where is part 3?
Throne of Bhaal is generally considered to be part 3, not merely an expansion.
It is not merely an expansion. It is from the old days where expansions were serious business. Take for example the Diablo 2 expansion. That was almost whole new game; a Diablo 2.5.

Regardless, I have never seen Throne of Bhaal as a third part in the series. But apparently everybody else did. Anyhow, whether you call it an expansion or not, it's a great game nonetheless.

Oh god, too many to choose...

A quick list of my favorites?

Final Fantasy VI
Final Fantasy XII
Final Fantasy IX
Chrono Trigger
Dragon Age II
Mass Effect
Fallout 3
Lost Odessey
Baiten Kaitos
Xenoblade Chronicles...

Dammit, I can't choose just one. I have failed this list!
Oh, I know this game. This is "pick the one that doesn't belong on the list" game, right? Well, Fallout 3 and Mass Effect are odd ones, but... okay. The one that really jumps out is Dragon Age II. You can not place that next to Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger and Baiten Kaitos. That's an insult. o_O

This is a really close one for me. Of the stuff I've played I have two games that were excellent examples of RPGs but in their own way. KOTOR and Fallout: New Vegas. IMO the best linear and open world RPGs respectively.

I'm putting my vote in for Morrowind. Nothing has ever felt as real and immersive as that game. I don't think it'll ever be surpassed. Any thoughts?
I can't agree more. Morrowind remains my favorite game of all time to this day.
Mine as well. I actually got lost once in Morrowind. No fast travel, no indicators where to go and almost no icons on the map. And lets not forget that Morrowind map is probably twice the size of Cyrodiil.

Sooooooooooo close for me, it's between Mass Effect and Ultima VII*.

* Disclaimer: I never got around to playing Baldur's Gate or any of the Elder Scrolls series.

Depends. Best semi-turn-based JRPG? Final Fantasy VI. Best westernish-style RPG that came from Japan? Dark Souls. Best RPG that, though awesome, completely shit all over the game that came before it? Chrono Cross.

Best ever? No. I can't answer that.
I completely agree with this, well said. On that note, I'd also like to add Persona 3/4 to this list as great rpgs.

Mass Effect 2 for me.
Holy shit, some people might froth at the mouth reading that.

OT: Baldur's Gate 2. Planescape was better from a storytelling point of view (maybe) but not nearly as good in the actual game department.
I wonder, not to be a douche or anything, but is that because of the insignificant role combat plays? I understand the beef many people have with PS:T is the fact that combat is playing not the second, but the seventy-third fiddle in that game.
