Maybe this is somewhere in the forums, but can someone please explain this to me? As far as I can tell, you challenge friends/family to dump cold water on their heads and if they DON'T, they have to give money to the ALS association. So if that's true, all the celebs we see getting wet are NOT donating to charity. I'm sure I'm missing something here, because that's kind of a horrible thing to record and celebrate.

Please someone explain this to me.

Probably will be beaten to this by the time I finish typing but, the idea is 100$ donation or 10$ if you dump an Ice Bucket on you. Many celebrities and Youtuber's are going above even the 100 dollar limit and then dumping ice water on themself any way, such as the Game Grumps who each donated 1000$. And I have seen one person monetize their video and will give the revenue when they are paid.

It's another stupid internet fad. My girlfriend got challenged by her friends . She asked me to help her film it. I said no. She pouted.

And this woman is 33 years old.

Children i say, children.

Well if that distresses you, I recommend that you watch Sir Patrick Stewart take the Ice Bucket Challenge.

To answer your question though, the challenge seems to have morphed to some extent and a lot of the people doing it seem to be opting to both donate and do the ice bucket thing.

Some people have specific rules they operate by, but from what I can tell the idea is to do it, challenge others, AND donate. Sometimes people donate according to how long they put it off after getting nominated, sometimes people donate according to how many people nominated them, or sometimes it's just some random number. Some celebrities have donated a few hundred dollars or a thousand or more, I think the voice actors for Pinky and the Brain donated $1000 together. There's really no strict set of rules. The basic point of the ice dumping is to get people's attention and get others involved, and the basic point of doing it is donating. I have no doubt many have not donated and only done the ice, but most of the people I know have at least said they made a donation.

A fad it may be, but it is raising a hell of a lot of money for ALS research. The worst that will happen when it blows over is that donations will go back to what they used to be. But in the meantime, they're getting a hell of a boost this year.

Bravely taking a stand against donating money to fight a disease? Why?

OT - The rule is to donate no matter what you choose to do but if you do the challenge you can nominate other people. Just donate what you are comfortable with, ALS is a terrible disease that hasn't received this kind of attention in a long time.

The problem with the "fad", is the people who's too stupid for their own safety. (Basically the fails)

As oppose to , you know, merely donating the money right? A shame publicity stunt for a good cause is still a publicity stunt. Some guy probably say that stupid beer challenge thing a year ago and thought, " hey why can't we do that , but make people give us money".

And people walked right into it, like lambs to the slaughter .

But seriously, what's so bad about raising awareness, and donating heaps of cash to a good cause? We get silly videos, and have a little fun, and ALS research gets a huge boost.

$88 million has been donated so far. That's.... fucking amazing.

Basically what other people have said; the idea is simply to raise the awareness. People are even doing it and donating anyway, or just upping the amount. Take TotalBiscuit who opted not to donate $100, then dumped a bucket of bills over himself and donated $1000 instead.

Actually it was started by a group of guys who had a friend diagnosed with ALS, it started amongst a bunch of athletes trying to support a friend and spread from there. The challenge has raised over $40 million for a disease that received about $1 million last year. A publicity stunt that does a good thing is awesome, a few wet blankets are to be expected I guess but at least they have no impact on the outcome at this point.

I guess at least you don't have to be a "sheeple" for whatever that's worth, that's very brave of you to take a stand against charitable behavior.

EDIT: Holy cow, it's over $80 million now? This keeps getting more and more amazing.

Do you seriously not remember this? It's the exact same concept, except with ice water, a bucket and money .

I'm going to stand by my statement with this one.

The things people will do to fit in.

Actually I never once heard of that beer thing until you posted that. The origin of the challenge is true though, feel free to look into it.

And I gladly support people behaving in a charitable way no matter whether it is to "fit in" or not (why is fitting in bad again?) The beer challenge did nothing good for charity but it looks like people had fun so I am not sure why you are so against it. All I can envision is a gothic high schooler talking about how everything is meaningless and we're all lemmings marching over cliffs. Seems like a pretty mean and unfulfilling way to live.

At least you can tell superior though, so there's that.

It's also to help raise awareness for the disease which, as someone who had a family member with it and got to watch them slowly die because as of now, there is no cure or anything for it it's at least a step in the right direction unfortunately I'm seeing a lot of people doing it without donating, without telling others to donate or how to donate and it's kind of pissing me off (and I'm talking celebrity type people and sports star type people who definitely have the money to do so) also, as to that link, never heard of that. I personally won't be participating as I have no money but instead I do what I've been doing for a few years now and talking to people about ALS and how it is to watch someone in your family slowly regress into basically an infant because they can't do anything for themselves, be in constant pain, and eventually die. And how it can tear your family up.......If people want to dump ice and water over their heads great. So long as they spread awareness and donate (when they can).

Meh, i don't like feeling tricked or manipulated to give money to people. Ask me for money to support a cause, i'll give some if i'm feeling charitable. Turn it into a silly game all the cool people are doing , add in celebrities and peer pressure and all my interest suddenly dissapears.

What ever makes money man. That's what makes the world turn right.

That's the viral part to spread awareness. Just look at how many people know about ALS now as opposed to before because it's associated with this ridiculous game.

You're supposed to donate either way, just if you do the ice bucket then you get to nominate other people and donate less. Either way has benefits, either spreading awareness and gaining potentially exponentially more donations, or just donating a lump sum.

For celebrities it seems like they'll donate large amounts of money either way, but for the general populace I'm seeing more and more people just doing the challenge to get out of donating or possibly even not being aware of the donation part, just thinking it's a fun internet thing to participate in, which would be very distressing.

Would you prefer it if there was no challenge, and far less money had been made?

I'm not heavily inclined to silly internet fads like this, but it certainly has given positive results in terms of donation numbers. A lot of celebrities (internet or otherwise) do provide links to donate, disclose the amount they donated, or both, so I'm not particularly bothered there either.

So I'm essentially ok with it. I'll just never do it. I also don't own a bucket. Or ice.

...University problems, man.
